Runescape has roughly 500k players paying subscription fees. However this is somewhat botched by the fact that the game is split into two separate games. If I were to guess, I would say about 400k active members are playing the main game, and 100k playing the old one. Also add in about 50k ftpers to the main game...

Agree. AoC I played this month has also very lively chat and a lot of players practically everywhere, at least up from around lv. 50/55 where all my alts are.
I have no idea about total population, but if we're talking about having people to play with -
Rift has tons of people playing. I was actually pretty surprised myself. Wouldn't of thought it unless I saw it for myself. Not talking about the end zones either, although they were heavily populated as well.
I'd imagine right now it's pretty close between SW:TOR and GW2. Planetside 2 is probably up there too. Once ESO comes out I'm sure it will take over as a solid #2 and probably be close to WoW in terms of players for at least a few months.
Those are registered account. Just like maple story like to say they have 100+ million players. While those are just registered account.
That being said, there are actually many people playing them.
But no one on this forum actually care about those games so they discount it. Just like Aion still have many subscriber. But the majority of them are asian players. So people on this forum tend to discount them.

Strange conclusion.... SWTOR is 3rd on that list
1 WoW
2 Aion
3 SWtor
4 lotro
5 Rift
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

is there an issue with my use of "Ftpers"?
makes sense, Aion is still popular here

1,5 million concurrent users (not active users, not registered users)

Just to advertise GW2 a bit.
I strongly suggest this game if money is a issue.
It's the best 60$ I ever spend on online game. Not to mention you can get GW2 much cheaper now.
No monthly subscription fee. And they don't push their cashshop as much as some other game.
If you don't count Asian players, my guess would be Wizard 101.
I said the same about club penguin.
But people on this site don't care as much about kids games. So they exclude those type of games as well as asian games.
Currently playing: Eldevin Online as a Deadly Assassin
