[Column] General: MMO Super Women

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Batman, Superman, and Spiderman are the most popular answers for the famous, who’s your favorite super hero? question. But what if you were asked to name your favorite female super hero? Icons such as Wonder Woman or Lara Croft may come to mind. What attributes make these super women feel truly real, but also truly memorable? For video games specifically it can be difficult to mention just one or two favorites. And it can be even more difficult to narrow down wonder-women characters from an MMO.

Easily Batgirl though technically not a super hero.

Best female from MMO is easily Caithe from the Sylvari (GW2). She's pure bamf.

Are we talking MMO characters? Or from any source of media?

If it's any source, my favorite is Shadowcat from the X-Men (Kitty Pryde). She always was an atypical female comic character who faced every day issues of a teen growing up and becoming an adult. She had her morals and personal opinions and rarely, if ever, compromised either. And at the same time, she had super powers and traveled to space to save the world. What's not to love?

From the MMO landscape, it's hard to say. I guess I'll go with Oracle from DC Universe. She's her own breed of dorky which makes her endearing to a degree. She helps you through your missions, directing you and giving you helpful advice. She may not get to go flying around the city with everyone else, but her impact is 100% felt on the hero side of things.

Liara, Wonder Woman always (It's Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman by the way as the triumvirate of the Justice League who cares about Spiderman!), Morrigan, Lightning, and Aeryn Sun would complete off my top five.

AND.........the obvious answer is ....LIGHTNING !

She is making a return, and why?Well because super heroes never die,she is THE Super Hero !.

    LIGHTNING

I am unfamiliar with Lightning, but I completely agree with all the rest.

Nearly all the female characters in TSW have been badass.

I thought I'll be among the unique minority, but luckily nope :) +1 to Vayman and sacredfool.

Marvel: Kitty Pryde. Maybe Spider-Girl too.

DC: Harley, and Barbara Gordon from the other side. Also Selina Kyle.

Mmo: KG from TSW. :) On the -pretty wide- bank of runner-ups a few more ladies from TSW, from AoC, and of course LotRO's Narmeleth.

    Rigby?

as for MMO's....has any MMO been done of a Female protaganist? none of the IP's done have a central figure that is female, so all of them are secondary in stature to capture the players imagination.

come to think of it i would say that TSW possibly has the best portrayal of women overall in any mmo i have seen.

one of the best aspects of it for me is that there aren't 'badass' women. there are just strong women being strong women. to me that speaks volumes more than a solitary hero character who kicks ass, but all of her gender compatriots still follow all the old tropes and stereotypes.

feminism: the surprising idea that women are people too.

Hmm my female super hero favorites. Rogue then Power Girl (and no not because of the boobs).

Have to say in video games only one really stood out, and that was Kaliyo Djannis in SWToR. I refuse to use any other companion with my Imp Agent.

I love the tough street smart, alcohol fueled, switch blade carrying female role to the flower princess, eww I got my shoes dirty, cant we just leave female charater.

I think most games have a hard time with strong female roles. Either they come off butch or tomboyish or even overly assertive.

Edit: And Im kinda bummed. Genese was at the Portland Wizard World Comic Con but not on Sunday, well at least wasnt the three times I went by her booth/table. I was looking forward to saying "hi" and getting a autograph copy of her book and maybe a picture. Bummer.

"A woman who suffers greatly, but finds a way to get back on her feet transforms her into her own kind of super woman—even if she doesn’t have super-powers."

This is the favourite sort of story women like to read. Its the same as a Catherine Cookson in its own way. Not sure about now, but a few years ago celebrity woman's biographies were always topping the book list. They had the same storyline too, the woman in her teen years had a terrible time, but in her twenties achieved fame and has got the husband/boyfriend.

As I guy I don't quite see the appeal, but it is a formula that works.

Maybe tis me, but this Genese, seems to be quite the super woman on her own.
  • BMBenderBMBender Member UncommonPosts: 827
It's simple.  Best super woman? The one covered by the least amount of fabric or tightest leather.  According to all the great and imaginative dev/pub houses out there, that's what gamers want.  Even the site your currently writing on agrees, just take a look at your own adverts.

    Mara Jade...!

She DID appear as an NPC in SWG, I think... :D

And ofc my  own player characters. ;)

  • SwaneaSwanea Member UncommonPosts: 2,401

Let's see, some of my favorites.

Mara Jade.  She was one of the first stand alone female Jedi.  The purple saber was perfect!

Commander Shepard. Everyone knows a female shep was better!

    Mystique.
