I kept playing WOW wondering when it was going to get really good. People were saying it was. never happened.. hype thats what it is.. a good game wrapped in hype, and the ad budget of a big studio.
I dont think WOW is the best computer game of the year, if you ask me that would be Battlefield 2 or Civilization IV but I do think it is the best mmorpg of the year in my opinion.
WOW is overrated in my opinion. The one reason its doing well is that all the MMORPGS out there are horrible at the moment. Once some good ones get released, their numbers will fall. I even thought about playing it again after SWG died, but I'll hold off for Vanguard or something else. I do play BF2 still, good game, better than WOW IMO.
I think WoW is a really good game. I am not playing it atm. But it did keep my attention for about 9 months which is pretty good. Not to mention I think the easier leveling system was a nice break for the casual gamers out there. Another thing I liked about WoW was the constant quests and content, it wasnt all geared towards high level. Although it will be in the future. But atm theres plenty of low to mid level quests and instances you can do as you work your way up the ladder.
Thats not to say theres not flaws, there's plenty. One being the battle ranking system in pvp. It stinks. But the game is good overall. Ya its easier than EQ, EQ2, Lineage 2 and so on in terms of grind, death loss, and traveling times. But I think that was its appeal. You might now be seeing alot more people making games with less of a grind since WoW did so good. Will See

No. The game is more like a trend then a good game. Because..the game sucks. I felt like it was on easy mode when I played.
Trends die out.. Wow's subscriptions are still climbing a year later, and the expansion pack isnt out yet.. WoW is gona be around for a long time. Its not a trend, or a fad. You personally might not like it, but there at 5 million people out there who are paying monthly/hourly to play it.

Five million subscribers is a skewed statistic. They've probably had at most five million acounts created, but definately not five million current subscribers. WarcraftRealms.com shows there's about 4.4million characters playing on the US and EU servers combined. Each character does not equal one account, and I've seen people with upwards of ten characters on one server.

Oh dear, dont get me wrong... but I suppose the Asian server could have just as many characaters as those 2 togheter.... Asia has the biggest fan base in world(if Im not mistaken), and therefore a great number of characters/players is missing in your "statistic". I don't know if WoW has 5 mil accounts or not, but you can't "guess" it from the europe and american servers combined...
And about the original question- WoW was considered by some sites as LAST YEARS game of the year... so I don't suppose it can be considered as this years game of the year
titles like best game of the year is usually just a popularity contest, and wow is by far the most popular and has the most people playing it you cannot argue that.
If most subscribers makes a game the best, then sure why not. I think there's other MMOG that have made more intresting games, but they have thier problems too. I think this year game of the year is a bit like picking the best of the worst as far as MMOGs goes /shrug

True, but sub numbers in WoWs first two big markets peaked some time ago. The last announcement of a record being broken, excluding the far east, was that 1 million players had subscribed to Wow in the US. That was posted in July. If WoW was still growing in the US do you think Blizzard would miss the chance to post about it? Likewise the EU.
The recent increase in subs to 5 million was due to releasing in new markets. WoW could potentially gain 5 million subs in China alone, and 5 more in Korea, due to the popularity of it's brand name, and mmorpgs in general out there. However, the way sub numbers are counted in those far east countries is far less accurate than the sub models for the US (Aus) and EU servers. Someone in China buys a game card, around 5$, and they are counted as subscriber. Blizzard isn't going to let that little detail distract them from posting records. Afterall, SOME people will see the "WoW has 5 milllion players", headline and assume it must be a good game and buy. It's clever marketing.
Sooner or later WoW will run out of new markets, and will peak in all of them. Then it will experience player drop off, as ALL mmos do. When it finally stabilises you'll have a true figure.
Blizzard has been more successful in selling to far east markets than ALL other non far east games, but whether that's because it has a great product or is trading on a good reputation, AND has great advertising, only time will tell.
WOW is a phenomenon, and I must admit one I cant grasp, and if your going of nothing but sales there is no question about it. I have yet to find anything particularly special about the game, but obviously alot of people like it. Then again, alot of people liked N'Sync and I never really understood that one either.

I think some of you ignorant people need to get off your high horse and admit WoW is a good game.. sure it gets boring 6+ months playing it but those 6 months were the best ive had in an MMORPG.
The game is so polished and pretty much bug free.
Its filled with 100s of quests for each side.
Even when you get bored of one side you can switch to another for a whole different setting and new quests.
Content updates come thick and fast every 2-3 months there is a huge content update can you name any MMORPG that does this?
I didn't think so.
WoW is the best MMORPG out atm those that say otherwise are just trying to be different but look like idiots at the same time.
Correct me if I am wrong but didn't WoW release in 2004 (I've been playing since release in Nov of 2004) and didn't already get all of these awards? Usually something has to be released in the year of the award in order to qualify for it.

Well, in my opinion, WoW is a great game. I enjoy playing WoW. But, it is not game of the year. WoW, *in my opinion* has good graphics a good storyline and good content, all around a great game, but in the end I have to agree that because of the hype and because of the sheep factor alot of people play WoW because everyone else does. Soon WoW will level off and settle in to become a popular but unremarkable game. GOTY should go to the game that has broken new ground. Is this game going to be a MMORPG? Probably not. To be GOTY you have to have done something remarkable. WoW overall is great but not remarkable.

I played a human warrior to 60 and whenever I was riding through Stormwind on my horse it really felt like I was a knight in shining armor. Just the eye candy alone is enough for me to play. I think more games need to put more emphasis on art, because WoW did it right and they are raking in the cash.
Now their downfall is WEAK pvp and WEAK lvl 60 content. Right now pvp is Carebear to a huge extent and their lvl 60 content gets boring but content will be added of course once the expansion is out and even before that...probably.

Anyways this was my first mmo so it holds a special a place in my heart despite some of the garbage they put in or take out in this game. If they just made the pvp a little more hardcore, I might actually come back.
