The majority of WoW's launch problems had nothing to do with a lack of polish.WoW had plenty of polish at launch just like most Blizzard games.

What caused WoW's problems at launch was a vastly unprecedented and completely unpredictable demand for the game which stressed and broke both the servers and game mechanics.Blizzard in hindsight did an admirable job getting new servers online and repairing stress fractures in their game.Something all developers should of taken lessons from but clearly many didn't.

Some people Need to learn the difference between polish and unforseen bugs due to server stress. Also people here need to learn the difference between a game review and a preview based on limited available content from the devs.

What would have happened if most reviewers played Everquest for 4-8 hours and wrote their review? Where would the MMO market be today?

    then comes:

-give it time it's only been out X months.

    -it's going free to play.

    -playerbase skyrocketing.

    -lack of players.

-come back see how much has improved.

    -new expansion fixing everything.

-game shutting down. It's been a long journey, we thank our supporters.

    Lol,sad but true.

The extensive criticism and defensive fanboy responses on this game is out of control. The game was stated as boring/mediocre, not an unpolished horrible turd.

It will get better, those that don't like it now are better off waiting for the patches to fix up the first 10 levels.

I always got the impression the console version would be better due to almost 5 months of release bug fixes before its available.

I truly think this game will definitely have the most lovers and haters for a MMO in a while...won't be any middle.   It's just that type of game.  Im just sick of critics, reviewers and people stating that it doesnt live up to Elder Scrolls style/standards....that's a bogus statement.

The whole Beta excuse is a bunch of crap. We're almost 1 1/2 months from release, the game is finished. Now its bug squashing time. No sweeping changes or additions are gonna happen unless they wanna push back the release date. This video is pure fanboyism. NDA is almost another red flag. Why should they hide anything? Its all to fishy for me.

People just trying to make a buck off re-sale of pre-order codes and Imperial Edition sell outs.

The reason the game has sold so well is cause of these "game scalpers" who are hoping to make a buck on the hype. Don't believe me? Go search Elder Scrolls Online pre-order or Imperial Edition on ebay...

They just trying to make a buck, when all this calms down the truth will be revealed.

  • TheodwulfTheodwulf Member UncommonPosts: 311

ESO isn't a mystery. People  have played beta and/or seen hours of NDA breaking video. Those same people have been burned  in the past by  developers and their shills. Bad reviews HELP the consumer as they get people to wait to purchase a product, giving time for more reviews not just by the "professionals" but also friends and those they trust.

IF ESO is as good as many say it is, It will be around a month after launch. There is no rush, no need to be first. The bells and whistles promised with a pre-order will only speed up the game play, which can only be bad for those who are interested in savoring the game. Take it slow and do your research, that way you will have nothing to complain about.

And all these games were back in the early pioneer days of MMOs, except Aion, and quite frankly what was the technology status back then?  I can understand bad launches back then since, while I am no techie but I would assume that people really hadn't gotten the polish launches due to the technology limitations.  Game nowadays that can't properly do a smooth launch I severely question their competence.  Like Neverwinter's numerous exploits that tests told Craptic and yet pushed it through the door with what appears zero effort to fix the problem till after the fact.  Or Turbine who at every major update or expansion, they deliver a product riddled with bugs and who creates a dread in the player population everytime they "fix" something they tend to break more things or how major bugs go ignored for a very long time (i.e. Combat Archery was broken at launch and well past a year after MotU).

Yep. Look at Rift. It had a pretty smooth launch outside of server queues and a couple disconnects. Having a smooth launch for an mmo is possible. TSW I remembered had a pretty stable launch as well.

He does not do a review and as we know NDA means nobody can say much anyhow.

Then he tells us the OBVIOUS,to use our own brain and opinions, well ya no kidding, how does he think we review a game, with someone else's opinions?

he does sound like he is making an EXCUSE,saying people only playing to level  5.Well that is the problem, there is actually a LOT of bad design decisions just entering the game, you don't even need to go any further.

Example your not going to change the animations, the CE or the hues around creatures,te shallow combat  and cheap graphics no matter how far you move along.

He is saying, everything people complain about is going to change later, bull .I never commented on the UI and really haven'r seen a lot of complaints there so he was stretching the complaint theory.

Bottom line is this ,almost EVERYONE is giving "previews" what the heck does he thin ka preview is?NOBODY has finished the game so NOBODY is going to give a full on REVIEW.

Yes I played at launch and 4 years more before quitting.I got no reason to try and cover things up as I don't even like the game anymore. You also mistake m e for saying that WoW was big free which is ridiculous, no MMORPG come close to being big free, stable yes big free no.I simply know the difference between a game being polished and a game having birds most of which was caused by to many people doing the same things at once because the devs got 10 times the expected population.

The content WoW had at launch was very polished.it didn't have enough of it and it had bugs and it was stressed to the extreme as they rushed to buy more hardware and get it online and fix bugs that had only just been discovered from the stress to go along with the normal bugs.but it was polished

Actually I think the NDA being in place still, the withholding of info regarding how the game will go is a good idea. To many times the gamers get told beforehand what to expect then after launch start moaning because it's not what they had all been talking about and living up beforehand.

Now Zeni can alter things after release depending on how they see people complaining, which they will do, you can't say you won't since you started when alpha was out. Sure people will complain about he change but it won't have such an impact since no one got told any info beforehand and an NDA was up allowing them to alter things.

Ahm. Yes, yes you can. Especially when you're payed to do it. They shouldnt have to experience 6-10 hours of boredom... they should have experienced the whole 84 hours that the beta was open... because they're getting payed to do it. That's their job!      Way to take things completely out of context.  I am talking about the game releasing to consumers in the state where the first days play and possibly the second day are not going to be that much fun.  What I said  has nothing to do with how long a reviewer plays the game.   It was a first impression so actually playing for 3-5 hours would be a good starting point.  What I said still stands. If you play and make it to level 10 and your several hours in and are bored of the game then its a huge problem.

    Are those things not true?
Truth has no need for excuses, or NDA, or hiding anything - is that not the case?

A truthful person is like an open book, he has nothing to hide, no excuses to make.

You do realize that NDA protects them from other gaming companies stealing ideas.

What if you were creating something and you said their will be NDA and some turd comes by and breaks your NDA and pitches YOUR ideas to other company's and makes a fortune off what YOU had done, not them.

This is why NDA is there.

And yes. People with brains can figure out that the game is not finished.

Beta = Video game development is the process of creating a video game. Development is undertaken by a game developer, which may range from a single person to a large business. Traditional commercial PC and console games are normally funded by a publisher and take several years to develop. Indie games can take less time and can be produced cheaply by individuals and small developers. The indie game industry has seen a rise in recent years with the growth of new online distribution systems and the mobile game market.
The first video games were developed in the 1960s, but required mainframe computers and were not available to the general public. Commercial game development began in 1970s with the advent of first generation video game consoles and home computers. Due to low costs and low capabilities of computers, a lone programmer could develop a full game. However, approaching the 21st century, ever-increasing computer processing power and heightened consumer expectations made it difficult for a single developer to produce a mainstream console or PC game. The average price of producing a video game slowly rose from US$1–4 million in 2000 to over $5 million in 2006, then to over $20 million by 2010. However, mobile, web-based and indie games can cost much less.[1]
Mainstream PC and console games are generally developed in phases. First, in pre-production, pitches, prototypes, and game design documents are written. If the idea is approved and the developer receives funding, a full-scale development begins. This usually involves a 20–100 person team of various responsibilities, such as designers, artists, programmers, testers, etc.

The games go through development, alpha, and beta stages until finally being released. Modern games are advertised, marketed, and showcased at trade show demos. Even so, many games do not turn a profit.

Mobile games are, in general, much quicker to develop than the mainstream PC and console games. Usually mobile games are published as early as possible, often after five months of development, in order to see how they perform. Consequently, mobile games can still be developed by a lone developer. However, the largest game studios can have up to 100 people working for a single project.[1] Like PC and console games, many mobile games do not turn a profit.

NDA = A non-disclosure agreement (NDA), also known as a confidentiality agreement (CA), confidential disclosure agreement (CDA), proprietary information agreement (PIA), or secrecy agreement, is a legal contract between at least two parties that outlines confidential material, knowledge, or information that the parties wish to share with one another for certain purposes, but wish to restrict access to or by third parties. It is a contract through which the parties agree not to disclose information covered by the agreement. An NDA creates a confidential relationship between the parties to protect any type of confidential and proprietary information or trade secrets. As such, an NDA protects nonpublic business information.
NDAs are commonly signed when two companies, individuals, or other entities (such as partnerships, societies, etc.) are considering doing business and need to understand the processes used in each other's business for the purpose of evaluating the potential business relationship. NDAs can be "mutual", meaning both parties are restricted in their use of the materials provided, or they can restrict the use of material by a single party.
It is also possible for an employee to sign an NDA or NDA-like agreement with an employer. In fact, some employment agreements will include a clause restricting employees' use and dissemination of company-owned confidential information.

This is for everybody crying that there is no excuse a beta should do this or that. This is far from the way it will be released. i.e. FF XIV ARR, Neverwinter, SWTOR, DCUO, and many many more. And now those games are booming. And ALL their betas were S$%t. Don't bash NDA, respect it. It's preventing some turd from making an ESO type game that will turn us fans off the elder scrolls series. Guy's do your homework and deal with it. Things are here for a reason and every mmo, moba, mmorts, etc. will go through the same steps every single time.

Probably right where it is today, because EQ was huge word of mouth, in fact many of the early MMO's were the same, not tons of market awareness for MMO's, they were a niche title, and rarely with AAA budgets.

The consumer landscape today is far more aware, has more knowledge at their fingertips, and has more experiences to draw on than they did then.

Yeah if the didn't have that NDA up during the past month someone could have stolen all of their ideas and created an MMO and released it before this one gets released in the next month or so,

However, mobile, web-based and indie games can cost much less.[1] Mainstream PC and console games are generally developed in phases. It is a contract through which the parties agree not to disclose information covered by the agreement. An NDA creates a confidential relationship between the parties to protect any type of confidential and proprietary information or trade secrets.
