Should I buy Elder Scrolls Online?

icemanateeicemanatee Member UncommonPosts: 79

I've been playing MMO's for the past 10 years now (theme park games and asian grinders) but never got into single player RPG games like the Morrowind series or even Skyrim. I briefly got the opportunity to beta and was indifferent about this game. I wasn't too fond of the animations and fight mechanics but I think I can get over it if the game-play and social aspects of the game improves throughout the exploring/leveling process. I'm much more used to the typical  WoW, Aion, Lineage 2, TERA, and Rift style of combat. Is this game for me or will I be wasting my money? Having a solid community with everyone working towards a specific goal is the type of game I tend to enjoy. Let me know! Thanks.

If you get used to TERA combat, will be fine in ESO, too. But, I suggest you to try to get in beta and try yourself.

You definitely should try to get into the next beta before you make your decision...and short of that, hopefully they'll be announcing a trial where people can try the game out to a certain point just to get a feel of the game.

MMO's are more personal preference than what others say.  Some will like a game, some will not...some will thing it's the best thing since toilet paper, others are claiming it will fail within months.  Only you yourself can answer that question and determine if the game offers what you need to feel and find in a game for it to be worthwhile...

Could you not get into Morrowind and skyrim because you didnt play them?  or because you didnt like them?  If the latter, id say you probably wont like it.

IMO there will be no real community here outside of PVP.  Certainly not for a while.

There is very little about the PVE game that lends itself or makes it easy for players to group or make friends in game.

Longevity helps build community so it remains to be seen in ESO manages that under the sub model.

Personally Id say give it a go.  You tried a lot of others and presumably adapted and ESO wont be any different really once people get used to the limitations and have worked ways round them.

Il disagree on Dwarfs  post  as there seems to be a lot of interest among PvE players  on the crafting and exploring and cartable gear in the game.

@ OP  If you played Rift  for anything other then combat  then I'm sure you'll enjoy ESOs questing and exploring Of the other games you played stayed away from those myself.  with the 50+ and 50++ content and adventure zones   along with the Cyrodiil  pvp campaigns  im sure youll find much to do in this game

I'm willing to give it a go, and if you check my post history you will see I have been fairly critical of the game. Some friends played in the last beta weekend and managed to RVR a bit, they said it was a lot of fun in cryodil but the pve up to 10 was the worst they have ever experienced in an mmo.

I have played in a couple weekend events and the game HAS been slowly improving so they might have something resembling o.k. at launch as far as new player experience goes. We'll just have to see.

Beware the highly opinionated... nothing beats trying it out for yourself.

If you didn't make it to level 15 in your previous beta, try to do that so you get the feel for playing with 12 abilities instead of 6.

Run the level 12 dungeons a few times (preferably with people who know the game or are quick learners,) and spend a some time in Cyrodiil so you get to experience that first hand.

2 months ago my wife said she would never buy a sub game again after playing WoW for years and then going GW2.  She stated this a few times.  I have been following ESO since first word of it came out.  She wasn't interested in it at all due to sub fee.  I applied for the beta months ago and she said she would apply for me about a month ago since I was frustrated about getting in.  Of course she gets an invite within a couple weeks of applying.  I was then able to pick up an extra key for myself.  So we both played together about 10 hrs a day for the days it was up.  She totally changed her mind about sub fee and said I could buy it for her for our anniversary.

    OP

Only you can answer your question.

My one bit of input.....if you are only a pve player......I would not race to subscribe.

If you love faction vs faction conflict.....strongly consider purchasing.

I would definatley try and get into the BETA and decide for yourself.   If you were to base what you played strictly on website forums such as this one,  you would never buy a game and play it because every game would SUCK according to the "masses".  I am very careful when I do play BETA's and I have been in almost every one that has offered it in the last 10 years or so.  I go into each beta only playing very little of it.  I just play the BETA to get a feeling for the game to determine if I want to buy it or not.  I don't want to try and PL through the BETA content as that will ruin the gaming experience for me when it goes live as I have "been there,  done that" already.

    Sure get it.  I did.

What's your disposable income like?  The game is $60 and unless you think it will take you months to figure out if you like it or not, that's the most you'll spend.  Try looking at other games you've purchased in the past (non-mmo).  For example, I think I bought CoD:4 for something like $49.00 back when it came out, and got maybe 6 or 7 hours of gameplay out of it.  Not the greatest investment, even compared to MMO's I didn't stick with like SWtOR where I paid about $140 for the game and 6 months of subscriptions for close to 150 hours of gameplay.

If I buy TESO, it will be based on that kind of perspective.

    You make me like charity

Wait a month or two until there is a solid consensus about this game. There will be plenty of folks rushing to be first and they will have a lot to say after they get there. I have regretted every game  pre-order I have ever done, every launch day I have ever endured. There will be lots of streams and youtubes and reveiws done within a month of launch, why spend blindly.

    to OP:

yes you should, but you should buy it for me, because you are obvioulsey not all that into it :D

  • DrakynnDrakynn Member Posts: 2,030

Well since you want someone to make a decision for you I've decided you should buy ESO...for everyone!

    Problem solved.

I'd say trying it before you buy it. If you can't, just wait till there is a free trial or something so you might. As much as I feel ESO isn't a very good game, that doesn't mean you might not enjoy it either, so try to get into beta if you could.

Thanks for the response. All of you guys had some interesting points. I've been burned too many times in the past that the "next epic game" will be the best which is why I was initially reserved about getting this game. I've heard so many great things about how the lore and the world is intriguing and fascinating in the Elder Scrolls series so I did want to get excited about this game after hearing the buzz.

Since I haven't played any previous games, will I feel lost if I never played previous titles? Also, is this game focused on PVP like Warhammer Online? I did get to try the weekend beta but since it's only beta, can I expect the game to vastly improve by launch?

    [mod edit]

Maybe I needed to say the obvious = sure if you join the game with a group of friends from a gaming guild ... you will have friends in the PVe part of the game.....  but the OP doesn't appear to be in that situation....

Anyone joining an established guild is in for a hard time especially if you are not willing to suck up to people for months, laugh at their in jokes and make the tea.      Then there is the .. you must join us on Teamspeak and listen to us oo ing and aaghing with a running commentary of ...!"I just killed a mob"  "i just got a green dagger with +crap on it fopr a level 2" etc...for 18 hours a day....or the guilds where noone says a thing and there is noone to do any group content with because most of them are stoned, pissed or just solo players.

Now thats fine and it is some peoples cup of magicka but guilds are not community in and of themselves and IME community develops over time and is helped by....being actually able to talk to strangers easily, group easily, complete quests together easily and meet up/bump into people easily because of favored towns etc etc...

unless your money is super tight buy the freaking game.

Even big haters would admit that ya you will likely get $60 of fun out of the game even if you dont sub for another month.  Its gonna be worth the 60 and could potential be your next game for a very long time but its def worth 60 dont be so cheap :P

This is what my thoughts were exactly.

People who do not know what they want, ruining MMO's for us all.

The typical logic from people who do not know what they want is... well if it is in the game and you do not like it then do not use it... or the reason EQ Next will be like the name states... Next!  because all the just throw it in there crowd...

I have money, but since Titanfall, Diablo 3 expansion and other games are releasing within the next 2-3 months, I want to make a wise purchase.

I'm hoping that Elder Scrolls online won't have loading all over the place (Age of Conan) and be a theme park MMO (WoW style). If it's open world with a decent balance of sandbox to theme park, I can live with that.

It's definitely a themepark, with no elements that could logically be called sandbox.  But it does have open world elements.

For the PvE part... ask yourself if you like stories... and immersion...

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
