After leveling several new characters this weekend to level 12 I have noticed that some choices on how to level are extremely faster than others.
This is how I found from personal experience to gain xp easily.
AvAvA > Solo grinding mobs > Questing > Dungeons.
AvAvA was without a doubt the fastest way to level and make a lot of gold on the side. I found a little repeatable questing hub and gave just short of 200g per quest and a decent amount of xp. These repeatable quests only took about 1 minute to complete.
Solo Grinding mobs was ok, I would just find a small circuit and run around and kill mobs one after the other that were 1 level higher than myself. (Did I mention that I was a healer ?) This was slower as it took about 30 -40 mins per level 10+.
Questing xp seemed quite low for the amount of running around I had to do and by the time I completed a quest to get not much gold or xp I could have used my time better grinding mobs or AvAvA.
Dungeons is my favourite way to level in any game. The xp from dungeon crawling was almost non existant compared to all the other ways of getting xp. Even though this was the slowest way I still did many back to back dungeons as I found it extremely fun.
I hope this gets looked at as I think all paths that players choose to level should be equal. But I can tell you that I will be going straight to AvAvA at launch to make as much gold and as many levels as I can.
I got (and I think this is what your intent is)

Aren't dungeons full of mobs? Does it take that long to kill them in dungeons that even with a group of 4 you guys couldn't keep up with someone soloing mobs? Haven't visited one yet but I've seen videos where there were trash mobs and they were looting soul gems like crazy. Does that count for anything that you don't get soul gems really off general mobs so if you factor in the cost of buying them at around 100g a pop you are making that much off the dungeon mobs.
There's a templar video someone dumped recently where almost every loot had a soul gem on it in the dungeon. The only way I got soul gems while questing and killing mobs in PVE without a dungeon was off the champion mobs and I only got 2 for that then once I got one from a chest but the lockpicking tool cost me 13g to buy so opening that chest wasn't free.
It seems like the group intended things drop the soul gems so that you don't have to buy them while others out questing would have to. Gear must be better in dungeons along with crafting drops. I'm wondering why the dungeon should give the same exp if it has other perks. If you got no other perks then I get it but another thing is... completing dungeons propels your undaunted skill line so that you have more skills to choose from. There are perks for doing dungeons - if you give them the max xp too, won't you be forcing everyone to play dungeons non-stop avoiding all other content. That's not fair to the people that like other things. I think dungeons have enough going for them and I haven't even been in one lol
Do you have a chart where you marked down the exact XP or was this something you gauged by time?
I ran all 3 dungeons quite a lot over the weekend and didnt see that many soul gems. I did however get several of them from the camp NE of Fungal Grotto when I was solo grinding the humans there.
The gems only cost 21g for the level 10 - 19 version and its free to fill them using the world skill.
I managed to make enough gold for a horse in one day from PVP. I just think its odd that it levels you much faster than the other ways. I would rather be doing PVE but since I can do the PVE quests in PVP I will do that instead since it makes me rich and levels my skills the fastest.
Also I forgot to mention when I was in PVP leveling and making gold I never joined a raid, never defended a castle or attacked a player. I just ran around solo killing the NPCs for the quests.
never saw a PvE quest in Cyrodill
Only the tutorial quest, and the 4 quests with PvP goals at our homekeep..
And when i did fight some PvE mob, the fight took over a minute, i had the mob down to 1/4th of health.... and suddenly there where arrows in my back... was sighted by two ennemy players and i died quickly
So do the PvE quests in Cyrodill work the same way as the PvE quests in PvE lands.... find a random questgiver with a black arrow and finish the task?
Yeah the PVE quests in AvA were pretty straight forward. One of the quests was kill 1 mob, one was run 50m and open a chest and return. There were only 2 NPCs but they each offered random simple fetch and kill quests.
None of the quests were PVP related.
Sounds like a good way to earn XP, and for now it seems like the fastest way.... but as soon as everyone knows where to find them, it will be pure PvP ganking area.... and not so easy anymore to gain XP
I think it will ballance itselves..

The mobs in dungeons offer next to no XP. Doing an entire dungeon took about 30 mins and gave less than 5% xp. Conversely you can get 2-3 levels in that same time doing Cyrodiil repeatables. You can get a level by grinding solo mobs in the same time, and if you were PvE area questing you would probably have gotten half a level. This is all for the 10+ levels obviously once dungeons open up as an option.
You can buy empty soul gems pretty cheaply anyway off vendors and fill them yourself by using the soul drain skill. The only real benefit to doing dungeons at the moment is complete the quests linked to it. The drops / loot from Cyrodiil are even better, I got a lot of blues while doing the repeatables.

They are pretty far within your own territory. How safe the areas are will depend on how well your side is doing in PvP really.

In DAoC our main PvP gates where allways camped by ennemie stealthers... and they also took a very very long run

I moused over my XP bar to see how much xp i had at the time then I ran a dungeon and moused over at the end to see how much XP i had gained using a calculator because Im lazy.
I did this with dungeon runs, PVE quests in AvA, Questing and Solo Grinding. Although I only monitored XP gain by rewards such as completing a dungeon, killing a mob or completing a quest time would also factor into it as I was a healer and I am sure players with better DPS would get more XP per hour than I did, well except for dungeons since that involves a group.
This might seem wierd but thank you OP for the information it will actually make me buy the game. I despised the PVE so the fact that I can level and make money that fast in PVP is great news. I'm a PVPer at heart and I really liked Cyrodiil.

For now they are cheap, I know I saw some over 100g a piece when I scanned the list for unfilled so as you get higher level offsets might change. It will have to be watched.
It's funny though that they got soul gems off grinding mobs and I got none until I smacked champs around.
The thing is you dont get it from trash mobs in dungeons you get it from the bosses and you can get it from unlocking chests aswell.
Its not that hard to fill a soulgem either just one spell you have to cast on mob at low health so it dont run out before it dies.
The main reason I did dungeons was for crafting mats. Heavy Sacks often had items for Enchanting or rare tempers, which would otherwise require lots of breaking down. In this past beta, I got 2 legendary and 4 epic tempers with a myruiad of blue, purple and 1 yellow Enchanting rune piece.

Go look at the video I posted, they got them from trash mobs. I've got no problem with filling them. I'm thinking about the cost of the unfilled ones. They go up in price as the level gets higher. Go back a page, I know about chests but they are not as frequent as "every loot" like that person in the video got.
If you are worried about gold just head over to AvA and do some of those non PVP related quests and you will have enough in no time.
I think we are diverting from the point the OP was trying to make. Dungeons have their uses, but levelling isn't one of them. Which leaves group players with only PvP (which doesn't suit everyone) or doing solo quests as a group (which is currently buggy and hampered by phasing). The ideal option would be to raise dungeon XP to be comparable to other activities. A MMO should be promoting group activities, not penalising them.

Exactly.
Why should those who wish to play with other people be punished.
Questing in groups is horrendous. This is due to having done part of the quests in an area and your friend logs in and you wish to quest together. Now you can no longer quest together due to the phasing and instead you must run off and find a new area skipping that content so that you are on the same steps.
The only content that allows you to group with your friends and still have worthwhile rewards is PVP. Dont get me wrong I love PVP but there should be more options.
If that's my answer for not getting soul gems from dungeons why isn't your answer for getting XP to do the same thing - to go where you found the abundance of it?
My end game is going to be mostly PVP, why should I have to do PVE in a dangerous place while you expect to do PVE in a safe place and you expect us both to get the same rewards. I would rather PVP for my gold or soul gems but they don't drop from players do they so I'll still have to pick up quests at some point. I'd also like to get some of those nifty crafting items you guys can get in dungeons but those won't be there for me either.
How about this, you explain that you want dungeon experience to be increased in the PVP zone, that I could understand and see as comparable. At least you have some risk involved. Making the safest grouping give good or the best XP sounds way too easy along with you guys getting dungeon quality goods while I'll only get the repetitive PVP rewards and have less variety of loot.
I understand that the phasing is tough to deal with but there is no phasing in those instances.
Truth is none of the XP will matter at all once we level. Why should grouping be more rewarded unless you are paying twice the entry fee. Everyone should have things they can do alone too. Groups are not the only way to participate in an MMO. Forcing people to group will only mean that more people have to play (and get along) for the game to thrive. Do I want to have to stop playing for the night because 3 other people didn't feel like coming online - not really.
So you are saying that you don't see any problem with there being zero incentive to run a dungeon more than once while levelling? Getting materials that are easily obtainable outside (and soul gems that become redundant as you outlevel them) isn't really any incentive.
This isn't about it being 'slightly more' experience or risk vs reward. Its saying that dungeons give you virtually zero experience after the first run / quest. There is literally no specific group content that will level you up. You can either do solo content as a group or PvP.
Doesn't that seem a bit strange to you in a MMO? Even SWTOR had group areas and dungeons that were worth doing for experience, yet people claim that is a solo player game.
Also the repeatables in Cyrodiil are far from dangerous. They were by far the easiest quests in the entire game, and given the amount of players that will flock to these areas, I doubt enemy groups will pose an issue either.
Each faction has their own hubs, so you wont be fighting over them either.

Risk vs reward. There was not as much risk as you may think questing within the boundaries of my own factions territory to get the most gold and the most xp compared to other parts of the game.
I expect many PVE only players may be forced to join PVP to do these quests just so they can afford a horse, repair costs and buy equipment. Since that is where the abundance of reward is.
One of the main reasons PvP seems to give more exp, is that the PvE content is currently capped. There isn't any real content to take you passed ~15ish in PvE.
The quests you do for each of the 3 currently available dungeons, while you can only do them once, give you ~ a lvl each (or close to it), plus a nice piece of gear.
Once the rest of the game becomes available, the numbers will change. And PvP is definitelly not the 'only' viable way to lvl. It just might seem like it at the moment. Farming mobs does add up quite fast (and vendoring the drops also adds up pretty fast), though I personally find that method a bit boring. There's also farming Dark Anchors, which yield a surprisingly large amount of Exp, and spawn fairly often. Hopping between 2 seems to be enough to constantly be engaging in the events.
PVP - Soul gems can be bought from vendors so I don't see why you need to go to a dungeon? If you want crafted gear and don't want to craft you can buy it from your guild crafter. If your pure pve you can make gold by selling your wares or other loot gained from PVE. Personally I plan on doing PVE and PVP (AvA). As for XP gain well I found that quest levels exceeded my character level quite quickly depending on which alliance I played some where better than others but I think this was partly due to lack of quests or quests not working resulting in lack of quests. But this was a beta so I'm sure there will be more quests and more working quests once the final version comes out. For example the main storyline quest stops at level 10 and there were multiple quests I couldn't continue because they were either bugged or not finished yet. So basically I think its too early to be worrying about this.

well i checked the video and seeing as 1.40mins in cerise the widow maker is a boss and have the same flare at the end of the health bar as a veteran mob the ones you kill at skulls on map i dont see a reason why she shouldent drop a soul gem
and again at 3.50 Big Rabbu another boss droping a soul gem
and seriously at 10.50 complaning that the end boss the whisperer drop a soul gem?
notice what the player dident get a green or higher grade item from the any of the bosses other then those soul gems he cant use in afew levels anyway.
I was quite frankly shocked when I realized for the 3rd time (3 characters) that by lvl 7 and 8 I had been playing the characters for 4 or 5 hours each (or more).
Also I should point out that I was HAPPY with the progress. Which shocked me even more.
In the past, while I wanted to love games, I wanted to grind them out and get through them thinking happiness (contentment?) was at the end of the road. With ESO, I am about 90% sure (after 4 betas) that for the 1st time in a LONG time (since my 1st MMO back in 1993-94) that contentment is going to be the PROCESS of getting to the end of the road much more so than the actual end.
Truly surprised.
Good assessment. It also surprised me the first time I played.
There is so much advancement happening between levels that it feels very satisfying without actually dinging. You have skill points gained through skyshards, quest rewards, dungeon completion and even some named elite mobs in the open dungeons. And using those skill points with all the choices available makes that a good thinking-man's character development experience. Then there is the advancement of individual abilities and weapon skills that get incrementally more powerful.
In short, you get the "leveling reward" reinforcement without needing to wait for the next level. It's a great system that makes "growing" your character feel like a more continuous process... instead of it coming in the standard ever-increasing time gaps most other MMOs use.
Fucking great pair of posts.... Exactly as you put it......

Not sure how you and the above few posters managed to get so far off topic.
He is talking specifically about how low the PvE dungeon XP is. As in nearly non existant. The dungeons were the right level for the characters in them (the mobs usually a higher level) and they still rewarded nearly no XP. He also pointed out that the XP from outside quests was actually decent but not as good as grinding the mobs that you would kill instead, and much less than just doing repeatable quests in Cyrodiil.
I am sure solo questing will be a viable option for levelling. Noone said it wasn't. You know what wont be a viable option for levelling? Dungeons.

Hopping between 2 seems to be enough to constantly be engaging in the events.
well i checked the video and seeing as 1.40mins in cerise the widow maker is a boss and have the same flare at the end of the health bar as a veteran mob the ones you kill at skulls on map i dont see a reason why she shouldent drop a soul gem
and again at 3.50 Big Rabbu another boss droping a soul gem
and seriously at 10.50 complaning that the end boss the whisperer drop a soul gem?
notice what the player dident get a green or higher grade item from the any of the bosses other then those soul gems he cant use in afew levels anyway.
check the video at 1.50 those are trash mobs.....
Dungeons.
