LOTR to go PS3 / XBox360, the end of mmorpgs as we know it

Its reported in Electronic Gaming Mag  Feb 06 issue that LOTR will be coming to XBox360 and PS3. In my opinion this will lead to a stark shift in the type of mmorpgs we will see. In short, dumbed down mindless shooter mmorpgs to appeal to the console crowd.

SOE admits consoles are the future as well in their opinion. Plus since PS3 is their baby, expect more mmorpgs they develop to port to console. Expect to see more dumbing down like they did to SWG with awful UI, severely limited choices, simplistic level based games, less choices, etc.

Unfortunately it appears the big boys are doing it again. Driving out the little guys, (see Interplay) who made wonderful games like Fallout and Arcanum and have left us with mindless Halo shooters bleh. And now the mmorpg market is next. SOE continues to buy everyone out. And companies like Turbine look to make generic games that will port to anything.

Whats next, mmorpgs on my cell phone ????

Time to go play 1990's games when there was something to do besides blow crap up.

I believe there are several Mmorpg on the cellphones.. As for porting to consoles. Well im actualy not entirely agianst is. Theres always a silver lining to every event. Since Ps3 are graphicaly ages ahead of there console brethren in graphical capacity and cpu power it mite just be a boon. The real question is whether the programmers who made the console games can make more complex computer style ones. Who knows.

There's only so much they can do on a gamepad. No mouse and no keyboard means dumbed down game.

And the industry is heading that way regardless. Look at what EA and others like them have done. They bought out or drove out of business the small guys. Then they puke out movie games, sequels, shooters, and racing / snowboarding / skateboarding / games all using the same engines.

I watch my son play his console games on his XBox360 and PS2. They all look exactly the same to me. Either shoot stuff or drive stuff. He loves his xbox live because there isnt any work involved. No leveling up. No rare gear to look for. Just log in and off you go.

I fear that will be the future of mmorpgs. Either it will be FPS where long term play means nothing. Or SOE type games with a mix of that or buying whatever you want.

Either way, its not the mmorpg genre I fell in love with 8 years ago.

I'll go on record right now and say I will not play any MMORPG on a damn console. I don't care how good the graphics are. Gameplay on a console just DOESN'T compare to gameplay on a PC. Plus no damn way am I tying up a TV in my house for hours playing a damn game. I use my TV to... *gasp* watch TV. I refuse to have 2 TV's in the Den so I can watch TV while I play a video game.

Currently Playing: Dungeons and Dragons Online.

There is nothing wrong with mmorpg's on consoles. Final Fantasy XI was on PS2 and I don't think it was "dumbed down" at all.

It's not like this game was optimized to me a console game, the developers had to go with a PC style game even if they knew it MIGHT make it's way to a console.

Consoles can get keyboards and they can get mouses, they're shouldn't be any difference espcially since consoles now have HD's for updates etc. They used to update all of Everquest Online Adventures onto a single memory card.

As far as Xbox live goes, that is just tye type of games that are played on xbox live right now. They're is no leveling up playing perfect dark, it's the type of game you just want to jump into a match and start killing other people. It's the type of game not the service of xbox live as a whole that your talking about.

    Are you kidding me?

The 360 is just the start of a better marketplace for mmo's.I predict that the term"console" will be replaced with "media center".

The convergence of music, gaming,DvD and internet is forcing an evolution of consoles to be MORE like a PC than ever before.

Already people are going beyond the standard sizes for monitors.Playing WoW or EvE or even EQ2 on a projector with wireless keyboard and mouse is just the start of this. Now most Lcd monitors have the ability for us to play games AND surf the internet or play online games as well.

This has been a LONG time coming for consoles.Once the developers of mmo's realize the marketplace has competition in "console" gaming BETTER products will come along.

It has already been proven that online gaming in general is an overwhelming success with the 1st xbox.Final Fantasy on PS2 the same. This will IMHO force developers of mmo's to go beyond making the tired old fantasy genre games.

All "console" developers have to do is release wireless keyboard and mouse functionality.

    Want to ENJOY an mmo?

Dont start a guild and dont be a leader or volunteer to be coleader or captain.

    Just play the damn game:)

Not kidding at all. This is how corporate america works nowadays.

And since you mentioned LCD televisions, I'll use that as the classic example. Back when the first flat screens appeared, theyre were quite expensive. The average price of one of those sets was $10,000 Consumers were interested in the "sex appeal" of those snazzy flat slim sets but the price was a turnoff to average Joe. So in typical corporate fashion they found a way to make it cheaper. Active matrix screens were replaced with cheap LCD screens. 1920x1080 TRUE High Definition resolution was replaced by so-called EDTV enhanced sets with lousy 1280x760 resolution. But all the ignorant average consumer sees is a lower price and think they're actually buying that same $10,000 set that now costs $1,500. Most are unaware they're buying a dumbed down version of the 1st generation sets that remain far superior.

MMORPG are no different. WoW got corporate america's attention and things will never be the same again. You wont see any sophisticated SWG type mmorpgs where it requires 6-12 months time invested to even begin to compete in the world. It will be a "broad appeal" stripped down world of fast food action and generic appeal. Say goodbye to innovation too like we see in consoles already. And say hello to a thousand sequels and cookie cutter worlds

The idea of playing a mmo on a console is ick to me as well. I like sitting at my computer, and as someone else said, also being able to watch tv while playing:) I also always have gotten sore fingers from the controlers on console games.

god help us if SOE buys people out..
But yea, consoles are the future of gaming... They've been saying it for years and years.
Its just make more sense, its a system thats built JUST for games.
It makes sense. The only problem I have with them is with FPS, but for third person action, controllers are much better.
I think what they need to do is give us the customization with our controllers.

I see in the future serious Gaming will be exclusive to consoles, and players will all be using different styles of controllres to suit their playing style.

So if they made a console with a keyboard and mouse that hooked up to a computer monoter...would you play it ?

The xbox 360 sells for around $600 ? ( total guess ) if you can find it, and plays any game without lag or hardware conflicts. It's no wonder the console market is killing the PC one when you can get top of the line tech for under $1000. I hate consoles, but it wont be long before it doesn't make any sence to buy a PC for gaming. ::::38::

I wouldn't want to play an MMORPG on a console. I like to be able to ALT-TAB and go to other programs, like my browser to look stuff up.

Plus, I can't stand consoles anyway. They're for thugs and punks.

I'm gonna hope for the best... I think its inevitable that mmos are gonna go towards consoles but that dont mean they will forget about the pc, there is no reason for them not to make them for both. So you wont have to worry bout being forced to play on your tv.

As far as them dumbing the games down... sure *most* of them will definatly be dumbed down. But dont forget the console market is a HELLUVA lot larger the then pc market. For those of us who like our games more involved our market will only grow because of it. As long as theres a market someone will be making games for us...thats a fact.

And as far as the gaming market all going to the console that'll never happen. Sure the console's have been growing much faster then the  pc market...but that dont mean the pc market has'nt been growing. Some people say WOW cost 75 mill to develop, if thats true thats prob more then the top 20 pc games from 10 years ago combined. I also wouldnt be surprised if WOW has made the most profits form any other pc game ... and may even soon make the most profits form any video game period. If its subs stay this strong for much longer im sure it will.

I really dont think we have anything to worry about pc games are nto going anywhere.

Is this the ideal we aspire to? To require 6 - 12 months of work effort before you can play the game? While playtime, in game experience and much else should favour the veterans, I don't see why one would want to design a game where there's no point to being anything but a "veteran". Newcomers should also make a difference. Meaningful difference.

    The future: Adellion
Common flaw in MMORPGs: The ability to die casually
Advantages of Adellion: Dynamic world (affected by its inhabitants)
Player-driven world (beasts won't be an endless supply of mighty swords, gold will come from mines, not dragonly dens)
Player-driven world (Leadership is the privilege of a player, not an npc)

Alright boys and girls, lets all calm down. The computer industry makes far to much money off of video cards sales, and ram, to ever let something like a console take over happen. Just flat out, they like making millions, and they will find any way to keep on making millions, so even if SONY left the MMORPG market and went to Consoles, better for us. Let them take their horrible ethics, and ideas with them.

Also any schoolboy knows that Final Fantasy was the tester game, and if i remember correctly, which i do image, It was voted the 5th worst game of all TIME, by G4 Gaming.

So that kinda answers the question of games going to console, Oh and about the LOTR going to cosole, they probally will, Turbine is headless. They have no vision and have no idea where their abomination which has lost all hype by now over the years, will end up. If you want to look at it in general they may just make it a full console MMO cause they firgure the Computer market has too much competition. Look at all the games in development, every single on in that line up has more content, and newer ideas than LOTR, making them more attractive games. I can clearly see, LOTR only attracting the crowd of guys that dress up in wizard capes, or style their hair like Aragorn before theu play, those guys, yeah the ones living in their moms basement, at age 35, those guys.

But I have NO FEAR of the consoles doing anything. I would actually fear computers more, cause the average joe knows hey, this XBOX 360's or PS3's Hardware only costs 250$ blah blah blah why pay 600$ for it, when you can have a comp that not only do more things than a console but look better too?

As America grows larger and larger, people will own several computers to a home, i myself own 6 gaming computers, and 2 laptops. an XBOX360 and XBOX origional PS2 is broken, crappy fan let it melt.

Now lets put up thje facts,

    CONSOLES: UN-UPGRADEABLE

    Computers: UPGRADEABLE

    CONSOLES: Limited controls and functions

Computers: Complete keyboard with various key combinations. (Alt+Tab)

    CONSOLES: Take up the T.v.

Computers: Use a monitor (it is shown in the U.S. Census more people own more computers per person than television.)

CONSOLES: Only played at home or a friends, that has same game.

COMPUTERS: Able to Download most MMO games, wherever you go. Your game travels with you from PC to PC.

that is just a few, sorry for the long post, but i was high and bored, so i sat down and typed this horrible rant of a thing, well i think anyways, it might be good? I dont know later im going to sleep its late...

The Xbox 360 has two USB Ports in the front of it.     "Mouse and keyboard"

One thing that would be good about playing it on the console would be if you where playing it on a huge HDTV. That does sound appealing :)

There are already many mobile MMO's, Era of Eidolon, Undercover 2, Tibia Micro Edition..etc.

I hope there are separate servers for 360 and PS3 players.

I am a member of the community LOTR forums and nothing has been said there about LOTR being a console game or being ported to a console. Turbine has also not said anything on the official web site so I would take what I read in any gaming magazine with a grain of salt.

Well of course SONY thinks consoles are the way forward....

The truth, however, is that proper RPGs are just completely unsuitable for console platforms.

  • DurigarDurigar Member Posts: 3

Not the end, just another beginning, the RPG world has been evolving on computers systems over the last 20 years, I hate console games I will never play any because they all seem generic, Wave of the future or not... Which I also beleive is more hype then truth anyway, here are the facts, almost all PCs come witha decent video system, sound, Networking and a keyboard/mouse... That means they are built for more complex tasks, as much as everyone thinks you can compair the two you can't... More buttons means more options and I have alot of buttons on my PC controller 8)... ITs not the future, the future is, that the game industry for computers will grow slim, like it always does, then developers will lose jobs and only the hardcore and best programmers will be left they will setup their own shop and create a truely revolutionary game that revitalizes the industry... The short of the story is, I have seen this cycle many times before, and it has happened this way every time... All things come to an end and are renewed,  Eventually someone will have a feeling of nastalgia and recreate your favorite game with a new spin.... And thus the industry continues....  Sony, Microsoft, they have places in this too, they have to martket all these cookie cutter games that eventually make everyone lose interest so that the bad developers leave the industry and the remaining folk get together with that fresh idea for something new.....

In all that rambling there is a message, it is, this is neither the end nor the beginning it is part of a cycle that will be repeated even if you or I dislike it, it will happen regardless.... For My opinion, I hate consoles, I would prefer my MMORPGs complex and intelligent... For my buddy, well lets just put it this way, if they could make quake a leveling game he would love it because when he got to the highest level he could have an unfair advantage over some other players.... YEY!!!!

Thats just my 2 cents 8)

    Thanks,

I think the best answer here is: let's wait and see. I mean if you have a console system, and you like MMO's give it a try before you bash it, and also remember that while both consoles and MMO's have been out for a long time (relatively speaking) MMO's on Console Platforms are new and thus will take time to adjust to a new market with new demands.

I think some people on this forum (not naming names of course =)) need to abandon their "PC" > all attitude. Consoles have their place, as do PC's, as time goes on we're going to see a merging of the platforms, for better or worse.

Keep in mind also, that you are comparing MMO's MADE for PC, and trying to port them "directly" to console. That's the wrong way to go about things, you need to see an MMO made specifically for a console before you say "Yay" or "Nay".

    Cheers,
    Gray Shadow

I actually see it as a good thing. As long as they make the games "PC style" and you will need a keyboard and mouse to play it just like on PC.

It they become "controller" games then it will truely suck.

Er, yes, FFXI *was* optimized to be a console game. It was developed for the PS2, the PC came later, as anybody who has played it with a game pad knows; the game flows much better with a pad. You *must* have a keyboard for talking to other players and for setting up macros, but basic game play works better by far with the pad. (Yes, I know it came out first in North America on the PC, but that was after both PS2 and PC versions had come out in Japan--and the PS2 version came first.) But I agree, it was not "dumbed down" in the least; FFXI is one of the most complex MMORPGs I know, and one that requires, and rewards, patience.
