Man, you know what, I can really respect your decision. You do what you gotta do and wanna do. As for myself, I too put a hard limit on my interactions with the world for the exact same reason. My Facebook is limited to people I fellowship with at church, my phone doesn't have internet on it, nor do I have cable. I do have a few legit reasons to keep internet, though, but I really couldn't count them all on both hands.

The world and the people in it are just getting worse and worse as they live according to how society shapes itself over time, and it ain't gonna get better. I'm generally the quiet type, because I have learned over time that the less words spoken shows the wiser man, but I cautiously take in a lot of the behaviorisms I see in MMORPGs today as examples of how not to be towards others. It serves as a good reminder to me exactly how evil and desperately wicked the flesh can be. Some might say that a person wouldn't act a certain way in person as he or she would behind a computer, but I beg to differ. He or she may not conduct themselves accordingly, but I can guarantee you that their demeanor lies within the heart.

Anyhow, as for me, it's all worth it when you do come across that person or that guild who has a good set of values and beliefs. Though, MMORPGs can be a lot of fun - Virtual competition is always exciting, helping others is rewarding, building a character that's based partly off yourself and the characteristics you hold, and doing interesting immersive quests that build up a story. I would say escape from them for a while and take a solid break. There are always times in one's "gaming career" when it's best to put games aside and do more real and less virtual activities :-)

    God bless you, man!

You looked way too much into what I said, so much so you went far beyond it. IF I meant it in such a way, my follow up would have been "u mad?".

Again you're showing the typical internet mentality of choosing to attack rather than consider what's being said. I meant no offense by that, just a lesson that you're just as guilty as everyone else, you prove it here yet again. There are different forms of attention seeking and all humans are essentially guilty of it in one form or another. You say you're just saying goodbye, while ripping into just about the entirety of the internet including this community. As if you're somehow above it all. IF you were you would have left peacefully and quietly.

I only hit back towards you, everyone else i have been nice and respectful to. Laws of action and reaction.

No- I think the op just wanted to discuss the issue before exiting.

And saying the internet is a cesspool (it is) isnt meaning to tar everyone with a broad brush either. I think the internet has become a horrible place in terms of respect and having civil debate/conversation. That being said, I have met some awesome people from within the murk.

Its like people talking about Detroit- its a 'hood' and a ghetto, etc... However there are very , very nice areas of detroit including some rich gated communities and places owned by hollywood and casino moguls- There are decent neighborhoods and good people there as well- I still say detroit is a 'hood'. =P

This is a very solid and orderly way to go about online gaming. It doesn't always have to be a solo experience in the midst of jerks. If it's a sweet manner of tight-knit social fellowship like this, it's well worth it.

You understand that the reason people start things, and post things, and reply to things, is to get the attention of people who care about such things... right?

Seriously.  If you're just posting stuff simply for your own benefit, let us know, so we can ignore you.

Well I'd say you escalated, but anyway, there's also over-reaction. There are good reasons to do things and bad reasons. Leaving the internet because you want to seek other pursuits, <-- great reason, Leaving because of the "asshats"? Not so much. Especially attacking the whole while doing so, as the bad is easily avoidable.

OF course you have the usual "old guys" agreeing with you, the funny part about that is, it's those types that started this troll or be trolled mentality "back in the day".

Anyway best of luck no reason to see you off on a bad note image

All or nothing huh? I feel ya. If you cannot find balance, force it. It says a lot about people in general. Moderation takes a lifetime to master but seconds to f-up. Sad thing is I witnessed online all the things you have and then some. But where you are allowing your will to be broken I will endure...because this is my hobby too. And I'll be damned if I'll be shooed away like some naive child. They have a saying about regrets:

"Never regret anything because at one time it was exactly what you wanted"

I'll keep the fight up for you though, toodles.

I loved gaming for along time. Someone asked me earlier "did you not like the games or something" I said.. "No, infact most games i have played were great, great stories, great interfaces etc, The one thing that ruined every game i have ever played was the people who played it" Though mind you there are some really nice people out there, Just wish there was more like them :)

I also have art, and cooking. Went to  cunlinary school 15 years back i guess i could also delve into that.

I honestly think people are so hopelessy addicted to online they cant even seem to fathom what a life without feels like. Well the taste ive had are that as strong as a fresh fig. And if you seperate yourself from online for a just a little while, you will find out that you are talented in a whole bunch of things, but you will never find them if all your time is preoccupied.

     O

I don't tend to believe that being online is an addiction.  IMO, it's a major evolutionary step for mankind.  But like anything else, it's a great servant, but a horrible master.

Like all evolutionary steps, there are ugly, disgusting aspects.  The way some people behave when they're anonymous, for example.  Something that particularly shows its head in forums...

Your journey is your own, but I suspect that it will someday involve "being online" as much as anything else, but on terms that work for you.  Either way, if you feel the need to leave, then I say good luck to ya's!image

Anything can be addictive, If the person on it has an addictive personality. I think of the internet as a deolution of mankind. Seriously not trying to troll :) I mean TV and small screens have caused humans to slowly lose periferal (spelling?) vision. communications may have seen to expanded, but the actualy interaction from people has gone down due to it. But i argue this about the calculator too. I usally do all math problems in my head, maybe on paper if i have to. One night i was tired stayed up late and was adding up dynamis curency numbers in ffxi. I use the calculator. Next few times i just decided, "hell why not use the calculator, I allready know how to add this up" I did this for awhile, til i realized that when i did try to add them up in my head later. it was much harder to do. you know kinda like using a crutch when u dont need it, after a bit your body will reply on that and your leg will grow weaker, because it has less of a reason to. Think about this and then think about alot of modern technology. You might come to find out, I am not as mad as people think :)

    O

Well... like I said... great servant, horrible master.  :)

My most recent philosophical battle was my insistence on doing everything myself.

Honestly, I think you're making a good decision.  But the world is a complicated thing.  Don't let it fool you into believing this to always be the right path.  Your decision was made from things I know nothing about, but still...

...if you see the buddha on the road... kill him.

Thanks for the advice :) though i dont think i could kill buddha, I mean he teaches respect of all life. Kinda hard to kill him  knowing what he taught :) hehehehe

And you post is the very reason I think the way I do. You think Im attention seeking, Well good for you. And tomorrow when im not around to see anything else is it still attention seeking? Im saying goodbye to the forums I have been reading for a very long time.  If you donot like it, dont post "seeking your own attention"

And little quips like "just sayin"  are very immature.

    O

    O

Well I'd say you escalated, but anyway, there's also over-reaction. There are good reasons to do things and bad reasons. Leaving the internet because you want to seek other pursuits, <-- great reason, Leaving because of the "asshats"? Not so much. Especially attacking the whole while doing so, as the bad is easily avoidable.

OF course you have the usual "old guys" agreeing with you, the funny part about that is, it's those types that started this troll or be trolled mentality "back in the day".

Anyway best of luck no reason to see you off on a bad note image

No, you are quite right, I shouldnt have fired back. It was very immature of me to hit back, As a kenpo instructor i know not to hit back when it can just be avoided. My apologies, But you have to admit it does seem a little mean to post such a thing to a person trully leaving the internet and just wants to say bye, right?

    O

You're right, my bad was making my point without really explaining it. It does sound rude in that light. I really didn't mean it that way.

I swear I really did start typing "I mean no offense..and stopped my thought there as I figured what I was trying to say was clear, it obviously wasn't. I did include a :) hoping it would set the tone.

I agree the internet is often a very hostile place.

I understand you don't want to further subject yourself to it.

Good for you to not halfarse it and to actually have the guts to pull the plug.

Personally, my solution is that I see the jerks as comedic entertainment. If someone cusses and rages and throws insults around, I picture the vid of that raging screaming kid on youtube that was floating around a while ago. Puts things in perspective. Let them scream, doesn't mean anything. let them insult, doesn't mean anything. A cry for attention, that's it.

The internet also lets you meet great people. Some of my best friends are people I met playing games online. (mostly from the EQ and DAoC days, so it's really long friendships that formed and we still play games together and meet up in real life when we have time)

In the end, online or off, it's the same percentage that are jerks. Yeah they hide it better offline, but they still are and if you get to know them you'll see it anyway. Not much difference. At least online you see it right away and can put them on the "comedy show" list right away :p
