Someone on another thread in this forum said that DDO and LotRO have both been in the works for 4 years or so.  That means that Turbine was working on these games while trying to work on AC1 and AC2.  So much for Turbine taking over AC1 and AC2 before they even thought about these games.

    Thats not true.

And you have the proof that they obtained the rights to these games after they took over the rights to AC1 and AC2?  Give me dates and places I can confirm your information please.

This is from the Boston Globe dated June 8, 2005.

    http://www.boston.com/business/technology/articles/2005/06/08/race_to_build_stormreach/

"Turbine wants to keep as much of this revenue as possible. The company created Asheron's Call on behalf of Microsoft Corp., but has since purchased the rights and runs the game itself. The deal with Microsoft was part of chief executive Jeffrey Anderson's ongoing plan to establish Turbine as the number one vendor of multiplayer online games.

Now comes phase two. Over the next two years, the company will introduce new games based on two of the most beloved fantasy franchises. In 2006, Turbine will release the first massive online game based on J.R.R. Tolkien's ''Lord of the Rings" trilogy. Turbine will publish the Tolkien game on its own, rather than pay a share of the profits to a major game publisher. The company is taking a more cautious approach with Dungeons & Dragons Online, teaming up with the French game publisher Atari Inc."

BTW just in case you forgot:

"The original Asheron's Call was launched by Microsoft back in 1998, as a response to the runaway success of Ultima Online. Its successor arrived in November 2002. In early 2004, Turbine took over the administration of the online worlds from Microsoft."

    My Bad...

I was under the impression that it took 3 to 4 years to produce an MMO.  I guess I was wrong

I took this from an interview of jeff :

Jonric: As a developer of online games, what is Turbine's style or philosophy? What do you regard as your distinguishing strengths, and in what areas are you looking to improve?

    Jeff Anderson:
I don't think anyone has ever asked me that question before. It is a very good one. Turbine is a privately held game studio. This means that we need to do things differently. We need to focus more on early prototyping. We need to be more time sensitive. Some projects seem to stay in development for five to seven years, spending astronomical sums but never seeming to get any better. We just can't run a business that way.

For me personally, I have pre-ordered the game.  So I will play it for the first month.  But I have to be honest here, unless things improve drastically, I will not play longer than that.

I just cannot get into this game as it is now.  Too many things I do not like.  As it stands now anyways.

...and some projects get rushed out the door without including everything that should be included, and the devs, due to money/time constraints, are forced to use the simplest methods instead of looking for a better way.

You are defending aspects of the game I haven't even hit on yet.

Then you've been arguing an ever more brainless point then I gave you credit for.... you're trying to prove his opinion of the game wrong. ::::12::

You know, you don't have to use large text or funny colors so everyone will be sure to see your posts. Just say something worth while and people will read it.

Edit: oh and to answer your question. This "genra" has been reduced to either crappy raiding, or crappy grinding/camping so yes I do think some of the things DDO is doing is pretty original. I've never thought instancing was a bad thing. Camping in line to tag a boss when it spawns so it's your kill is probably the worst thing in a MMORPG. Instancing removes that. XP grinding and just standing in one spot like EQ2 has...also lame. I like questing even if it's got no depth to it, I'd rather that then just grinding XPs/kill

So yes I think DDO does have alot of refreshing and original ideas, I also think 100% instancing is a bad idea and no crafting was a disapointment.

No offense, however, I've found that this statement is generally made by those who play games that have severe design flaws and will generally be struggling for subscribers.  Of course this has the D&D name slapped on it so that certainly helps garner a few subscribers.

Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

i think people really want good games.

i doubt that many people would suggest that a game sucked if it was great.

oh yeah.... just because an asshole agrees with you... it doesnt mean the asshole isnt an asshole any more

awesome... saying the only reason you'll play is because complainers like us arent there is like saying ...

"i'd like to be a jew in a nazi camp, cause all the other jews who are complaining about it wont be there."

thanks for the most flawed logic i've ever heard.

Well, I originally thought that once beta was over, that I wouldn't be buying the game.  As it turns out, the longer and -further- I got into the game, the more fun I had.  With that being said, I will be preordering the game myself within the next couple of days.

    Just my 2 cents.

Christ, talk about flawed logic! In your very own example you end up doing exactly what you accuse him of. You're combining his logic with your own perception of the game in your little analogy. If your analogy were correct, then he'd be playing a game he totally hated and despised, yet continued on with it because all the other people that hated it weren't there.

In actuality, he ENJOYS the game and is expressing his belief that once all the whiners leave, the community will be that much better (populated with people that also enjoy the game).

Quit trying to filter in your own opinions about the game into his reasoning for liking it.

You must mean next to yours?

I really doubt that even if I decided to take my Ph.D in flawed logic I could come up with something worse.
