Everything in moderation, I always say.

You don't have to leave the internet cold turkey- just do it less often.

    That's my advice at least!

Well, the proverb comes from the idea that your whole lifetime is devoted to seeking the buddha.  Finding him is false... often a deception or a temporary fix for what ails you in life.  Keep seeking and best of luck!

Well op i also don't like the attitudes in games and also come from FFXI which i recently stopped for good.

One of the biggest reasons games have gone so foul is yep WOW,that started this L33t talk and elitism. Also games are designed to solo for the most part meaning there really is no community aside from sharing the same NEEDS then they go their separate ways again.

I joined a Guild in FFXIV and the best thing i could hear asking what was expected of me was "Just play, nothing else".The people have been actually pretty good,i have yet to notice one bad person although tight knit community is long gone,it is still 90% soloing.

Bottom line is FFXI was truly the only really good grouping game because it was designed that way, best community inside and out i have ever witnessed in a game and i moved around a lot.I also was involved with a couple JPN LS as well and i even had a really good JPN friend who was funny as heck until he disappeared.

My answer is simple, just keep the internet in perspective,DO NOT expect much from it and all is good.If you expect it to be full of respectful church going high moral people, you will be disappointed. The internet and gaming should just be a pass time to kill some time and find some fun doing something. It used to be 90% sports for me but i am too old for that now and can't afford to get injured and miss work.

Bottom line there is no reason the internet can't exist and still do anything else you want to do.I feel the OP is just taking it too personal but i have a better door closing mechanism than most,i just shrug off other people and their lack of morals with ease.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

  • OmrieOmrie Member UncommonPosts: 116

I know i don't really know you OP, but I think it may be a little extreme to leave gaming that you like doing all together because of some bad experiences with some of the less savory people the internets has to offer.

I think it's a good idea to just maybe take a break, and maybe play with a bit more moderation. I honestly think doing so even creates longer lasting friendships with people like how you used to, back in the days of Ultima, and FFXI. Absence really does make the heart grow fonder.

Though I understand what you mean about communities in online gaming; elitism, and overall abrasive behavior seems to be a common symptom from the competitiveness of mmorpgs these days. It's become less about the stories and completing tasks with your friends, and more about who can complete the content the fastest, and most efficiently.

You don't have to leave all together, just log in not quite as often, you know~?

    Good bye and good luck.

The problem with the OP is that he is trying to find a good community and good people. That is not what the internet and video games are about.

If you just use both as entertainment, you will be a lot happier.

Yeah I have to agree but I can't act as if I'm not as much apart of the problem as other people. I remember in my first 4 or 5 MMOs I spent months just messing around, chatting it up, trying a bit of everything and lvling at my own pace which was usually slow. For most games it usually took a while before I got really serious about anything.

Now when I try out a new game I race to the top as fast as I can then spam spam spam endgame content so I can min max the crap out of my character and then I get bored because I'm surrounded by players with the same playstyle and most people like this are jerks and i don't really fit in with jerks.

The OP said, "and a smaller site mpod."

    Any idea what mpod is?

    Pardon any spelling errors
Konfess your cyns and some maybe forgiven
Boy: Why can't I talk to Him?
Mom: We don't talk to Priests.
As if it could exist, without being payed for.
F2P means you get what you paid for. Pay nothing, get nothing.
    Even telemarketers wouldn't think that.
It costs money to play.  Therefore P2W.

Nothing wrong with solo play, but every once in awhile there needs to be some social play. and none of the race to max level and raid!

Life is all about balance, perspective, and attitude. The three intertwine and can pull each other out of whack very quickly.

Never forget, there are humans out there who love you just because they love life and everyone/everything about it!

May you find peace with all three, best of luck to you, friend.

Yeah, MMO's changed, but so has life. Somewhere along the way it stopped being about the ride and started being about the destination. Which, in a consumerism/materialism driven society is hilarious as the endgame for a human is always... well... death.

I then went on to try a game made by nexon called Nexus. I really enjoyed roleplaying and forming friendships with people in that game. So many cool concepts and art taken from the series and made to see in an online world. The first time i saw a malboro in ffxi i freaked out about how errie it was. and I should have, it killed my whole party :) But as i progressed through the game into lvl 50's I started noticing this "do it our way, or we wont play with you " type on mentalities. I found myself in Japanese linkshells because they accepted my differences, unlike the NA people whom i could actually understand.         While playing FFxi online, I jumped through many games trying to find a idea community for me that would be fun to play. I've played more games that alot of people have even heard of. I played everything from ragnarok1 to eve online. Each game I played the community was noticibly more toxic than before.  Every game that passed it got worse and worse, Competetive people just would not let me have my slow paced gaming. I tried on many occasion to take a game that had become competetive and slow down, but just foundt myself alone.

Getting tired of players competetion, griefing and just down right elitistism, i decided to delve into the internet to aid me with finding a mmorpg for me. Thats when i discovered mmorpg.com and a smaller site mpod.  I spent years looking through games, downloading making accounts. Everytime i log into a game seing people arguing, fighting, mpking, griefing and showing obvious signs of neopolian complexs. Ive grown very weary of people additudes online, Never in real life have i had people treat me the way they do online. And I guess rightfully so, Im a trained kenpo instructor.

I feel you, and fully agree with you - that is how it is in general and it's sad.

I'm pretty sure it won't go for the better untill there are some real consequences for being an immoral internet jerk.

Although anonimity is attractive,  I'd still like to see mroe boundries one day, like having a mandatory online identity tied with rl id.

Pretty sure you've played the crappiest games ever. No offense really but you really have a bad pick. You've played games for long periods of time that I wouldn't even just touch with a 10 meter pole.

And what's with the trained kempo instructor crap? Are you telling me that you are sick of people beating each other's up, but you would beat up someone in real life because he disagrees with you. Seriously?

I read your post and this entire thread and sympathize with you very much.I agreed with most of what you said also.

I stopped using this forum a few years ago when it became incredibly toxic and most forums for online games are the same.

Which is a shame that people let their passions and beliefs take over to the point where they think that they and only they can be right and everyone who doesn't agree is wrong.

I came back a few days ago after reading the sticky about forum moderation and while there are clearly still trolls here it is certainly less prevalent.

I am in a different situation to you in that i play mmorpgs with real life friends, and as we have moved away from where we grew up it is a good and fun way to keep in touch with each other. It sounds to me like you were hoping to find a community of good like-minded people to game with and that you didn't succeed .

That wasnt your fault , the internet and MMO/ forums can be an incredibly toxic and nasty environment and it is so because of the anonymity that the internet gives to people.

Good luck in your future endeavors.

In fact, why complain about people having low patience? It is just a mismatch of style. it is not like your preference is superior than theirs. They are too impatient, you say. They say, you are too slow.

If there is a mismatch, don't play with them! That is why i don't depend on others for my fun. It is too much work finding someone who match my style.

Blizz tried that with real id on the battle net. HUGE backlash and they drop it.

So what if the internet is toxic. Just don't take it seriously or ignore those who you don't like.

Not everyone is obsessed nor do they neglect their life outside the virtual world when they spend some time on it.
