Not going to ruin my game.

Players with nasty names are a nice giveaway to never group/guild/dungeon with ... that's how I handle it anyways.

    Exactly!!

I'm all for freedoms and am not going to suggest any names be banned, but I certainly prefer immersion and would prefer to play with those who feel the same way.

So, if someone gives me a hint (their name, their guild name, how they talk in global chat, etc.), then I can very freely choose to ignore them and we never need to bump into each other again.

Ironically enough what was sometimes worse was their handle... If you join a guild you are ID'd by your @handle... which is your account name.

    What are your other Hobbies?

Gaming is Dirt Cheap compared to this...

Don't look now, but you just used a word "retarded" that some people could use to give you a "ban and ip block" by a GM.

I know what you mean, but as others have said. Worry more about your own fun and less about what others are doing. You can choose to report or ignore those you think are offensive.

You know how many neighbors out there would not even care if they saw someone robbing your house?I have a friend who has tons of money, been retired since he was 35,he is one of those that couldn't care less what happens in the world around him because in his little world he has no issues or problems ,just loads of money.

There didn't seem to be any sort of naming restrictions at all based on my group encounters.  The typical banned words were all there unrestricted.

Ah...how I love irony. On the one hand you're saying there is no difference between F2P and P2P communities and then you go on with your own myth about PVP vs. PVE communities...priceless!

I'v seen just as many dumb ass names in PVE and PVP - no difference except in the minds of non PVPers.

I remember in Fallen Earth I had a character called "Korrban Dalles" - a GM contacted me in game saying it was too close to a name from a certain movie and had me change in game....

So copyrighted names (within Fallen Earth I don't see how such a name is lore-breaking, I see it as a homage rather) is not ok, but offensive names are.... Oh well. But yes, where goes the borderline?

Krimli is a typical name in fantasy games for me when playing a Dwarf. Is it a Gimli rip-off? Yes. Does it fit the lore of eg LOTRO? Heck yes it does. But XxxFrödöXXX ? Or SuperLugulus? I don't know.

Anyway, we won't solve it here. Aside from OPs motivation, his question was basically if there is a naming policy or not and if Zenimax has one or not, it's not up to us to decide. Though I have to admit, why not state ones wishes to them just as one does with game-mechanics and such, as paying customers (not as whining beta-players).

No, it doesn't "blow that theory out of the water" at all.

People who are reported and have their names changed by the game moderators will risk being banned if they keep offending repeatedly. In a F2P game that threat is meaningless.

Did anyone notice a naming policy in beta? Or even more importantly, a quick way to report vulgar or perverted names?

i've seen some pretty offensive names in chat, but there was no way to report them from the chat that was easy to do.

    On your shard????

Did you already forget that there are no shards in ESO?

Well, there kind of are. Just not in the traditional EQ server sense. The Mega Server is actually made up of dozens of smaller servers that can communicate seamlessly. So, even though you don't have to log on to different named server, your character might be on North American server 112. While my character is on North American server 045. However, you can send me tell or group invite and then teleport to me. The game will then move your character from one shard to the other so we can play together.

Personally, as someone who enjoys RP on occasion, the only thing that really grinds my gears name wise is when some R.A. Salvatore fanboy names his character Jarlaxle or Drizzt and runs around "RPing" that he's a Drow. Umm, in the words of Dr. Evil, "How about NO!"

I saw this all the time in EQ. You're a Teir'Dal in that game, not a Drow. In ESO, you're a Dunmer, not a Drow. Get over it. This ain't the Forgotten Realms you're looking for...Move along.

Ok, now you are taking away my fun as a R.A. Salvatore fanboy. image

But no, I don't try to do as you say above. I might if it was a Forgotten Realms online, but this is ESO. I won't be playing an Artemis assassin either.  But I will steal a name here or there based on a character I want to build, I use last names more when they have them and go with a non related first name.

I always tease guys who make assassins called Artemis. It's really a woman's name. It's the name of Zeus' daughter. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Artemis

You don't think there are more silly names in pvp like "branflakes" (that was one I remember specifically) or like evil said above, dawn kibauls. That one is brilliant.

Don't be offended I was just poking a little. I didn't mean it seriously.

No offence taken, lol. And you might be right about FPS games...it's been a while since I've played any, My experience is from MMOs that typically have both PVE and PVP and honestly I can't tell a difference between the two with respect to idiotic names.

I also typically play in RP servers when those exist, since the people there tend to take immersion more seriously...except for the ones who love to roll there just to troll RPers that is.

I really didn't take notice of morons with bad names in the beta weekends,  until I came across somebody who thought he was clever naming himself "Phallus".

What, you don't enjoy seeing Pubestache and his friend Dickfingers out questing? MMO players are very creative and will think up ways to make vulgar names even if there is a naming policy. All ya can do is report it, and I'm sure there will be a ticket or flagging system to handle this type of thing.
