Financially, it has been anything but stellar. Economically it has been a loss.
That statement makes no sense to me. If the game is a financial success (and it is at least a modest one from what I've heard) how can it be a loss "economically"? I think the two mean basically the same thing in this context. Can you explain what you mean by that?
I think GW2 had some great ideas but also some really bad design decisions which spoiled it for me, but I guess it's good some people still enjoy it
GW2 is undeniably lovely. But my first hint that there might be issues underneath all that painterly pretty was watching a preview where your character wakes up from a blow to the head or whatever and is told to go out and help the good people of the town. I knew right then I'd be spending way too much time collecting cow turds and killing vermin. That was way before launch, too.
Also, no housing was a big red flag.
And then there was that whole gems for gold thing. Never was happy about that.
Living story never even remotely interested me.
Ascended finished me off. Now I don't remember the last time I logged in long enough to slog through a daily. I would say I played long enough to get my money out of it, though. I will say that much for it.
I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.
I will save this thread and ignore its obvious bait...
we will now discuss the avatar of the OP... WHO CAN NAME HIM? and WHO HAS THE BEST AVATAR ON THESE FORUMS!??
That, my friend, is the Iron Sheik. I believe he's passed on now. I can't really answer the second question without further thought.
EDIT: Misspelled sheik lol
No more Iron Sheik? He was so fun to hate.
Yeah, along with Roddy Piper and Nickolai Volkov. I love how American Wrestling's bad guys were so often "foreigners" lol
I stopped watching wrestling when Kendo Nagasaki, Big Daddy, and Giant Haystacks stopped being popular.. which was a little while ago now.. but wrestling seemed a lot more fun then
But yeah, foreigners for some reason were always viewed as either the villain or something equally exotic.. odd i know
Heh, most of that was during the late 80's during the STallone, Willis, and Ahnold movie craze, it's no surprise they had that USA! thing going on in popular TV satire.

I've also stated my opinion several times before, but let's air it once more.
I think GW2 is the best MMO in the market right now. ESO has some strong points over it, but when I put everything together I can still see myself playing GW2 over ESO after the first month is over. WildStar didn't interest me one bit when I tried the beta weekends. ArcheAge is a big mystery and god knows when it's coming out.
With all that GW2 is now and with all the improvements coming in April and beyond, I can see myself playing GW2 for a long time still. I might be taking breaks every now and then - I have done it in the past - but since it's so easy to just hop back after the break, I don't see GW2 leaving my hard drive within the foreseeable future.
What made me quit playing GW2 are some of the most obvious reasons why many people quit playing it.
1: Zerg zerg zerg 2: Action bar spells spamming.. and spamming and spamming, it all feels the same.. 3: WvW one big blob or go home...Nothing in between. 4: No healers - i hope EQN learns that if you do go down the path of GW2 then your going to have alot o trouble after 1 year...
Altough GW2 did have a nice world and music, and many more improvements that made most other mmo's fall behind. The 4 points i named are what turned me off completely.
These are my opinions in no way i say GW2 sucks or anything like that, it just failed to entertain me and was realy disapointed after spending so much time in this game.
In a few years from now mmo's will be totaly diffrent, GW2 is like any other mmo, it may be that special snowfloke for you but a dropped turd for another. Same as you may HATE WoW / SWTOR while others think its the best thing since sliced bread.
With ESO coming out this week, I have entirely lost the will to log in to GW2. But if not for ESO, I would still probably be playing GW2. Playing with guildies is what made that game fun for me. My guild is opening a branch in ESO, too.
GW2, as others have said, does need an expansion -- without increasing the level cap. New classes, etc. People will buy slots for that as well.
I also did get my money's worth out of GW2 and I can go back to it any time as long as it's still live.
GW2 is a good game in it's own right, but I never could get behind the lack of the class roles. Nothing turns me off to something more than the group play being about zerging. Whether you were in a dungeon or out in WvWvW it was zerg city, and that was just so insanely dull.
The other thing that turned me off to GW2 was the combat, spamming a few hotkeys wasn't the real problem it was the fact that when it came to weapon skills you were locked into 5 skills per weapon with no possible modifications. Sure you can change your utility skills about but I wanted more of what GW1 offered where you could mix and match skills around all day (so long as you were using the appropriate weapon for the skill)
Also do not bash another game that hasn't even released yet by trying to compare it to your favorite, it just screams vulnerable fanboyism and no one wants to deal with that guy.
Wait, is that a marching band I see (with banners) still going up and down that same street shouting how the second coming to the MMORPG space has arrived in GW2?
Sorry but from my experience the game is not good nor bad but average with some of the most cringe worthy story writing I've personally seen in any game I've played over the last couple of decades. So your mileage may be different from mine, but I wouldn't care one bit if there wasn't another game like GW2 in the future.
To summarize the above: There will not be another game of the same quality as GW2 that delivered the same amount of content updates without an initial sub.
I agree with the OP actually (except for the ESO sucks part).
I couldn't care less if you hate or like the game, it is simply a fact that the game is richer in features than most (if not all) current MMOs and the amount of details in this game is incredible.
They have an incredible combat engine, and they tried to innovate in so many areas.
Very few games (if any) have so much content and attention to detail at release, very few games have tried to push the boundaries.
I should add that a game made by perfectionists doesn't make a perfect game unfortunately.
But still, I find it sad that most people will just try to damage the reputation of the game without proper arguments ("it sucks", "Don't play it") rather than pointing at its faults and accepting the fact that it is still one of the better games out there event though it is not perfect ("It's a very good game, I didn't like ABC and hope they can change it").
It will be hard to surpass and I doubt even ArenaNet themselves will try to do it. They will just focus on the "essential"/"core" content since gamers are (for the most part) unable to see the bigger picture and rather grind their brains out rather than play a different type of game (with more freedom).
Lastly, I agree that this great game ends up being a bit bland... I believe this is because they tried to make PvE/PvP too consensual and accessible for players (everyone wins, always), and so there is very little "friction" which makes it somehow bland (and I am talking about the game mechanics here, but the story is also bland I agree).
I sort of agree with a previous poster about the weapons (though not because of GW1, hated that game so much and frankly, tired of hearing about it). The good news is that while they have not committed to "new" weapons, it's bound to happen. I'm really not sure what they'll do with the 5 basic skills, I mind the limitation a lot less than I used to, and even less if they give us poleaxes, 2H axes, spears, etc. How awesome would that be? Of course, this would be mean even more trait skills since some do center around certain weapon groups so it wouldn't happen for a while, what with the April 15th traits coming.
Unless their last announcement is new weapons. Prooooobably not.

One thing that Colin said they're going to do is open up all weapons to all professions. So not new weapons, but access to weapons you couldn't access before, each with unique sets of skills for your profession. So if you want a mesmer with a rifle or an engineer with a great sword hang in there, it's in the works.
Financially, it has been anything but stellar. Economically it has been a loss.
The amazing amount of detail in this game is unsurpassed by anything, even some of the older games that have set precedents.
As somebody who had been burnt out on WoW and every other derivative product under the sun I wasn't expecting anything and got more than a thousand hours out of this game.
What exactly do I mean? Graphical detail. Platforming elements. Size of game world, content, class diversity. The events that were delivered free of charge I took for granted. The awesome soundtrack (seriously? nobody appreciates the quality of the music?). The easter eggs strewn about the world...
If this game had released 10 years before it had, it would have received "one of the best games ever made" award, but.. it didn't.
Even though it did everything perfectly and on top of everything added something the MMO genre really needed like Platforming (and to a FAR lesser degree), Puzzle elements, it hasn't received its just deserts and has in recent time sort of gone the tried route of adding more incentives for people to spend money (yay ascended).
To summarize the above: There will not be another game of the same quality as GW2 that delivered the same amount of content updates without an initial sub.
PS: ESO sucks and isn't half the game GW2 is, even sans sub.
One mans garbage is anothers treasure. Funny thing is they were just a few small things off from being a good game.
1. Kept the Trinity, this would have removed the zerging style game play from PvP to dungeon runs.
2. More persistent content. Living story drove off more people then it kept. Some loved it, most hated it.
For the most part the game had a lot of quality but where it messed up, it messed up really big. Sad thing is, if they reworded the game and fixed its major flaws, I would try it again.

As preorder GW2 player I will use word of one smart but grumpy cat:
"good!"

I think the tl;dr of the op is:
-GW2 added some new elements, detailed and with fluff
-any company who is going to copy those elements will do it in a cheaper - less fleshed out way
Such is the nature of being copied, so I can't argue with the op.

Oderint, dum metuant.
Completely agree.
Any mmo worth its salt should be like a good prostitute when it comes to its game world- One hell of a faker, and a damn good shaker!
You're right of course. ESO is twice the game GW2 is. Better questing, better storylines, better skill system, better progression system, better voiceover, better lore, better RvR, better PvE, better exploration, better crafting, better group mechanics (trinity).
But it doesn't have jumping platforms, which is such a terrible and tragic loss.
ESO is in another class so you don't know what you are talking about.
"even sans sub" what does that mean or where you having a girly moment.
"sans" equals "without".
Oderint, dum metuant.

Don't agree, according to beta-test TESO has:
- better questing. NO! worster questing system, not dynamic and repetitive
- better storylines. I doubt, but noboby see it yet. will not argue before complete it.
- better voice over. NO. similar.
- better RvR. No. I like WWW more. If faster has more fun basically. AvA too slow and boring imho.
- better explorating. Completely not agree!
- better crafting. why better? the same crap. Sorry, I not like crafting
Also TESO has atm in comparison with GW2:
- MUCH worster combat system
- bad combat UI
- worster animation
- worster art and graphics
- no sPvP, spectator, etc.
- just one AvA map, bad design of match-ups
- no underwater combat at all
- no jumping puzzles
- no good dynamic events-system
- no live-story
- no minigames
- etc.
GW2 blew me away the first view times I played it,how pretty and nice combat after secret world combat disaster.
After a view moths it started to feel grindy and their are no real expantions.
ill buy guild wars 3 if it will ever release just hope its more open world.
