LARPs have been around for well over a decade. I remember seeing the people who were into them when I went to the GameCons in Los Angeles for my Battletech Competitions.

/shrug. Having taken part in numerous gaming competitions I don't really feel right putting those people down. I will, however, point out this point of confusion. You would think that since they are at least being physically active while playing their LARPs that they would be healthier gamers. Oddly though, most LARPers I have met are of the "husky" persuasion. Who knows.

Wouldn't call them noobs per se though. A lot of LARPers have been around since the days of Dungeons and Dragons First Edition. So a good few of them are probably older and have been at it longer than a lot of online gamers are.

    Agreed though....it does look silly.

Keep in mind, there is probably a good portion of society that would say the very same sorts of things about us having come to a gaming website and spent hours on end posting hundreds of, what many would consider, useless threads.

...and paintballs just really do not hurt. Anyone who says they do is a gimp.

You know... (still laughing at that vid).. there have been times since I got into MMOs that I've found myself thinking - what with all the PnP D&D discussions that I know zero about - that I might have missed out as a kid by not getting to ever experience anything like this.
Then I read the OP by 'moosh and had a good laugh.. then saw that video... I dunno.. it's just kind of.. embarrassing really.

The funniest part though is I phoned two of my (married) friends from University just last week to ask about them joining us for a beer, and the husband couldn't come because he was 'LARP'ing. At the time I had no idea wtf she was talking about, but now I do... And well.. I am now viewing Grant in a whole new light hahaha.

Anyways, seeing that now makes me very glad that I spent my youth on the beach, surfing, playing in a metal band and loving women.

But if nothing else, at least they were getting some sunshine.. under all that armour and makeup.

And hahahahaha @ "I walk over and like wtf are you geeks doing?" Classic 'moosh.

Why is imagination discouraged in society?

I mean, I wouldn't do it because I try to stay trendy and cool, but kudos to those brave enough to have fun without being told off by some jock or street punk.

I mean, sometimes I sneak around pretending I'm playing Counter-Strike or Splinter Cell but it's all for kicks. I mean, anyone who takes it seriously is pretty brave ::::03::

I probably sound hypocritical for defending something that I avoid to maintain a social life but I mean its good to know there are SOME imaginative people out there ::::02::

By the way, Im not saying they aren't losers. They most definitly are. But kudos to those losers for comnig out ::::20::

Never played D&D or Warhammer but I respect those who do :)

No one find it all ironic that people make fun of others roleplaying, allthough be it hardcore, in a forum dedicated to just that?

Reminds of a sketch I once saw, could have been Kids in the Hall, were there was this two groups of people, one in wich people only had one arm and the other in wich they had no arms. ( or something like that )

And the people with one arm kept making jokes about the people with none, "losers" and such, was a great skit though, and it do sound like Kids in the Hall.

I was looking into starting a LARP of my own. The major problem was funds. I was planning on providing all the equipment (from riveted chain and plate armor to aluminum prop swords), but since I'm in college and have a bodily deficiency to cope with which requires a lot of money, it just wasn't a practical avenue.

And Malachi, it depends on what sort of paintball you're talking about and what sort of paintball gun. I've played a few games up north in the winter where the paintballs would partially freeze (which I suppose would make me either a gimp or just a hardcore player), so they'd hit you and not explode. If you're wearing just a jacket and a longsleeved shirt under that, it hurts like heck. Also, one of my friends was in short sleeves and shorts I think (not in winter) and was shot to pieces. Should tell that to him when you examine his welts (of course that was partly his fault). I've got a speedometer for my paintball guns so it lets everyone adjust the speed of their guns to the same speed so we don't have someone's shooting at 80 ft/sec and another's shooting at 280 ft/sec. The usuall, I think, was 240 for us if I'm not mistaken; haven't played in a long time.

I remember one of my friends got shot in the crotch at point-blank range... male of course...

But anyway, I had envisioned something really cool for my LARP and even made a website about it (of which I should probably take down now). I had also collected some armor (but being new to collecting armor, the only thing good out of the deal I got was experience). My city has parrades once in a while too, and I was planning on borrowing or renting someone's horse and rigging it up and then decking myself and another in full plate or partial plate with chain and just riding through the streets, advertising the game to get publicity. Up north here there's plenty of open land and lots of winding roads in forests and through the countryside so there would have been plenty of territorial dispute and area to move around. I was actually thinking about doing something like Vergel suggested and having anatomical crossbows that shoot paintballs and just aluminum swords (not like aluminum foil or anything stupid or low-grade like that) - something they use for props in movies like in battle scenes. They weren't sharp and they would flex a bit.

There probably would have been injuries now and then, but if people followed the rules I set forth, there would be few. There would have been few horses in the game as they would probably have been limited to quests - renting them would prove to be expensive so they'd have to be for special events and not used in fake combat (serious hazard of injury). I've only ridden a horse once and it was only trotting around and even then I was bouncing up and down in the saddle because I didn't know how to ride.

There'd also be gamemasters who would participate in quests who were called 'ancients' or 'elves' or some sort of variation. I'd planned them to wear white robes decked out on the inside with lights so at night they'd glow white - maybe have them wandering in dark forests and in swamps (because there are quite a few around here) and have them play pivotal roles in the game (they also could not be killed so there was no use in attacking them). Some might have had staves with inner circuitry and a translucent crystal at the top where a light would shine through when a button was depressed on the bottom of the staff or some sort of thing. Anyway, I'm going to be moving in the near future too and trying to get a job that will help pay for everything I need just to survive, so that's another draw back. I'd have to relocate after years of acquiring the equipment. Like I said, it just wasn't practical - even if I had funds (unless it was something like a $10,000 grant to get started)...

I don't see the point of all of the bashing... I mean, come on, we're all people who "pretend to be wizards" and whatnot on a daily basis. We just choose to do it on a digital level. I've done LARP things before, and had a great time doing it. Once you get over worrying about what other people think, it's a great time.

My general feeling is... DOn't knock something until you've tried it.

The exact same argument could be made about people who play paintball. It's a bunch of grown people running around in a field pretending to shoot one another.
