IMO, the game is like every other MMO out there. I played the beta and I uninstalled after the second one. The game is not bad by any means but it is very expensive for what it is. You could play a FTP game and spend a lot less money and get the same thing. I am a fan of the Elder Scrolls series and the game did not give me the feeling that I was participating in that universe. I might try it again when it goes FTP. If you really don't know if you want it, I think you will have buyer's remorse inside a month.
Sure, go ahead, waste your money on a game that's going f2p soon and brings nothing fresh to the table. Infact it does some old things poor.
In before white knights, Gw2 does have the trinity even though its not as hardly represented as you would expect it to be. But yeah, that actually requires you to have a lvl 80 and ACTUALLY play instead of thinking with your ass, no offense
So what are you? Just a "white knight" for a different game?
@OP: given what you have said, don't buy the game. you aren't going to find what you are looking for and you are going to be frustrated.
So "yes" you will die in pvp and "yes" you will run back to the keep/area you were. On that alone, since this was an issue, don't buy it.
It's not like Guild Wars 2. I'd be playing more GW 2 if it was. Then again it is a "take keep move on to the next keep, oh wait they are trying to take that keep back, go back to that keep type of game.
Is that "like" guild wars 2 or is it just how a "take keep, now take another keep" game plays out? Warhammer was like that as well.
My advice? From a person who has purchased the game and enjoys it ... wait until a trial weekend and try it then.
Like Skyrim? Need more content? Try my Skyrim mod "Godfred's Tomb."
I thought that some of the game mechanics were decent but they did lie about a cash shop and say it wasn't there for micro-transactions then they added it very late without an excuse or a reason.
Other things that players complained about them doing, they released a public statement about either justifying it or in some way trying to kiss the booboo. See - changing the starter areas/collision etc. because of reviews, or apologizing for the api changes, or justifying imperial items. No, for the cash shop, there was dead silence as a response to unhappiness.
For the cash shop they have not addressed any concerns about it. They simply ignored the reactions and actually mentioned that they will be adding more items to it as if one poke in the eye wasn't enough.
This wouldn't matter as much if they hadn't previously barked so loudly about how a subscription model fit their game and how the sub would be all-inclusive.
So, it's not just that they flip-flopped, or that they lied, the bigger curse is that they didn't see a problem with any of it and still don't. That is a huge red flag.
Here's my prediction for what happens for the cash shop just for funzies.
Pets they already mentioned and that's "cosmetic". Well so are gear, horses, costumes, faction, and UI changes so that opens any of those up. Eventually, that would include housing which was a largely requested addition.
The inventory in the game was wayyyy too small - that suggests they'll add more slots to buy in the shop. It was obviously too small even for a casual. This is ripe for upgrade purchasing.
The timed ranks for crafting I expect will be the last addition. You'll be able to buy that time so that your character comes with crafting abilities when you start later in the game than the first day players. They may even go the full WOW route (which seems to be their template so far - horse then pets - identical flow) and actually sell a pre-leveled character.
The thing about the cash shop IMO is that they know this game is going FTP sooner rather than later. If they were committed to the sub, there would be no cash shop. This game is a FTP game a Zenimax knows it. They are simply trying to get the box sales from people who can't wait and they will make up some excuse about it later. After all once they have your money, what can you do? I am surprised they didn't have the guts to offer the lifetime sub as well.
If you're not sure, don't get it now, wait one or two month to see how it goes. Sure, you won't get the full game since you didn't pre-order, but maybe you'll dodge a bullet.
Best advice if you are on the fence is to wait, as echoed by many in this thread.
Wait until the first content patch, and the release day bugs should be cleared up by then.
Wait about a month, and you can get anecdotal evidence as to the retention numbers in the game. For hard numbers, you will need to wait about 6 months, or 2 quarterly reports to investors. 2nd quarter will be all about units sold, not how many subscribed. 3rd quarter may give some retention numbers, but I bet it will be about how many units sold on the console release.
Lastly, I would ask if anyone from the other games you play bought it, and if they are going sub. If yes, then jump in. If not, wait till the game goes to Steam, is on sale, and drops subscription.

I'm starting to think some of the complaints about a cash shop are folks just being really short sighted and selfish ,,,,I'm sure ZeniMax is hoping this game becomes popular enough that down the road new customers buy the game and if that's the case shouldn't they have the options to buy some of the features the were offered to the early access crowd .
What I find to be a huge red flag is that a number of veteran mmo players seem to think the word revolves around them alone ...if this game or any game to be honest is to be truly successful they are going to have to draw in folks that haven't even thought of playing these games before ,
How would a first time player or a very casual mmo player even know the advantages of having a mount or an Imperial character if they bought this game by word of mouth or just off the shelf ? Giving folks the chance to play around with a new experience and then upgrade to what features they want isn't a crime ....it's plain and simple some allowances have to be made to allow for expansion of the new player . If the hardcore mmo vet can't see this than we are just playing a dying gender of game that will go the way of the dinosaur
Best advice if you are on the fence is to wait, as echoed by many in this thread. ...[snip]
If you are unsure OP, then most often it is better to wait. Let us early adopters flood in and start posting/video about it if you are still interested. I have played the game full time as a PTS player for many months, for me, it is a really fun experience (even after playing all this time).
My way of deciding to purchase a game is to ask myself:
a) do I want it?
b) do the benefits (to me) outweigh the costs?
If both are yes then I buy, otherwise I wait and see.
Cheers!

Look, without getting all religious on you regarding quality MMOs and such. Bottom line. Did you like the single player games? If so, then at the very least you'll get your entertainment dollar out of this game. Lore, Quest, and world are all rooted in the Elder Scrolls, so it's pretty fun. Don't get turned off by the starting area, it's a fail, but soon you'll get out of it and into the more interesting parts of the world.
If you did not like the single player games then you will most likely not like this MMO. Combat is clunky (just like the single players), and a smooth combat system is the hallmark of any AAA MMO.

This right here. However, if anything if you want more non-biased reasons then I would suggest asking in the Pub or LFGame forums. Naturally asking in a game's particular forums you will get more "yes you should buy it" responses. If that is what you want to read anyways, well then I guess you asked in the right spot.
If you like the elder scrolls games you cannot go wrong with ESO. It has some great stuff going.
But if your picky and have a game you enjoy already then wait it out, about free to play ? no idea could be 3 months could be 3 years.
it blows GW2 pvp out of the water for sure, this aint follow the diamond on the map for 2 hours and zerg empty keeps. Alot to do in Cyrodill, from dungeons to solo pvp to massive sieges to exploing zone to questing to find skyshards. And you can enter it at level 10 and get booseted to level 50.
I bought my directly from Zenimax to ensure no fackups from retailers who just happend to lost your early acces code and you need to call them 15 times to try and get your code.
Let me be honest, i bashed ESO into the ground for numerous reasons, but it still offers more fun then GW2 or any other mmo atm. I just wished they did a little bit more effort in animations :P But its all personal vieuw m8.
If you have the cash to play it buy otherwise play the game your playing currently

Do you always dismiss alternative entertainment choices so out of hand? If a movie or book or TV show doesn't follow formula X Y Z do you just pass on it without even giving it a try? You may very well miss out on a lot of new things if you do that.
ESO is not a game for everyone but it's also not a game that can be fully judged by watching some videos, playing in a few level locked beta weekends and certainly not by listening to supposed PTS "experts" spout on about the game good or bad. I really don't know how long I will keep my sub open or when/if this game will ever go F2P/B2P but what I do know is that what I saw interested me enough to make it worth giving it a try.

However, I will continue to follow the rule of thumb of, "when unsure...do not buy". When I'm unsure about something but on the fence about it, I just simply do research. It's easy and 99% of the time doesn't cost you anything. If I decide to use others' opinions if I should buy something, I usually get that info from a non-biased and neutral source.
I am going to wait and see and also because I am playing some other single player games . When some time frees up and the price goes down I will come back and see .

What would you lose if you buy it and the game doesn't live up to the hype for you?
What would you lose if you wait 1-2 months but the game is delivering everything it promises to those who already bought it?
If you have nothing to play right now go for the leap of faith.
I bought because i grew up es games and because of the awesome statue in ce.
Im not expecting to be the next big thing or a wow killer etc.
I think it will be a game to enjoy for a month or 2 just like with swtor.
Nver expect huge on a game nowdays.
Games are going downfall anyways.
So what are you? Just a "white knight" for a different game?
