[Award] General: The PAX East 2014 Awards

BillMurphyBillMurphy Former Managing EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 4,565

This year at PAX East 2014 we had a host of solid games to look at, especially with us now dipping our toes in the waters of straight up RPGs. Many had playable demos on the show floor and some had amazing things to show off in panels and presentations. What’s really exciting is just how many of our favorite games were the independent titles willing to try something new and unique. Overall we want to thank every game at the show for bringing us out and allowing us time to play. So without further chatter, let’s get to the MMORPG.com PAX East 2014 Awards.

Was expecting to see more MMORPGs in the list tbh.

ooo.. can we turn this thread into what the definition of a MMORPG game is?

    ... again.

  • SenadinaSenadina Member UncommonPosts: 896
Yeah, only 1 AAA MMO in the bunch. For the first time, I am worried about the future of this genre that I love.

Not many mmorpgs in coming. ESO just launched. WS is the only remaining AAA themepark in sight. Games like Landmark, EQN, Archeage, Black Desert weren't at PAX, as far as i know. So, they can't be in the awards. SC's the only one.

I would hold off on the worry. Sandbox is on the rise, minecraft opened up some eyes, now let the pros step in and take it from there. Archeage and Eqnext will open some more eyes, good things are coming to the genre, it will never be what it used to be, but it's time to let go of that mentality and embrace what's to come.

Noone bothers with their "guru" sites, so they just decided to turn this one into a gaming flophouse.

They should change the name of this site altogether, they just don't want to give up the domain.

Some like it and some dont, Im the later =- I to would have liked to see more MMOs on that list.

Prodigy could be right up my alley. I've been missing a good tactics game.

There is more to talk about then whats listed up there, WoW's new expansion, H1Z1, ArchAge off the top of my head. EDIT: Also The Repopulation, Landmark, Malu also all at PAX

I might be just a noob but from the title I read The best of Pax 2014, not the best mmorpg games of PAX 2014.  They could also make a list like "The PAX east 2014 awards for mmorpg's" so everybody is happy.

    Hey Nan,

None of these were actually showing anything at PAX. Landmark did interviews. Repop was there for our panel, and if Malu was, we never saw them or heard from Michael about booking appointments.

These awards were for the games we DID see on the floor or at appointments.  Two of our categories are specifically for RPGs, and AA wasn't there, nor was H1Z1.  Hell, even CCP sat it out.  We did see Draenor, but it lost out Most Anticipated to Star Citizen this round.

Also, Star Citizen IS an MMO.  It's also NOT an MMO.  But it can be either, based on your preferences as a player.  Much like Shroud (which also wasn't at PAX, by the way).

I like the list, and the broadening of our horizons.  The future of MMORPGs is in diversity and new ideas, and opening up the scope of what we consider MMORPGs can only result in better and more games, over time.

Plus, I saw all of these games at PAX (except Shards, I missed that), and all were very impressive, so kudos to the staff for these winners.

you should just put the disclaimer in the opening post so you don't have to explain it every year. Sure the paxaward should make it obvious that the game had to actually be at pax but.....you know...

Trion doesn't get at least two mentions? What's wrong?

Some interesting titles in there which i probably wouldn't have noticed otherwise.

Just because they dont have a booth does not mean they were not there. Interviews, Twitch streams, panels. I digress. Thanks Bill for the coverage you did give us.

Yeah it was definitely Wildstar's show, considering they were the only MMO. Who cares about crappy indie MOBAs?

Thinking that a miniature collectibles game is going to be big is really stretching it.  The only thing Prodigy is going to be is a money sink.

Early access for Darkest Dungeon doesn't begin until late 2014. You don't get immediate access; that should be changed to avoid misleading people because not everyone will double check that info on the game's site.

AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!

Nearly every one of these are no name games. Just shows how lacking the industry has become that nothing AAA exists on this list with maybe Star Citizen being the possible exception. Pity Star Citizen exists as a solely PvP mechanic.

Pax has become pretty disappointing. This is the first time in 5 years I'm actually considering not going because there just isn't anything I really want to see. Not really the pax peoples fault but last year felt pretty meh...and this year doesn't look any better.

The Star Citizen DFM henceforth known as Arena Commander is solely focused on dogfighting and ship to shop boarding which will be almost entirely PVP. This is true, but only because it's an in game simulation to help you practice your skills before going into the "real" game universe that is Star Citizen. SC itself is so much bigger and more expansive than just PVP fights. It will be a living universe with different opportunities for everyone and with a revolutionary new AI package being developed by Kytherai(?) it should be hard to tell the difference between NPC and PC.
