Get those guns and stims ready to head back into the Arkfalls. Defiance will be going Free to Play on June 4th for the PC. A little bit later it will be hitting F2P on the PS3 on July 15th, and it’ll also be going F2P on the Xbox 360 at a currently undisclosed date (but soon!). Perhaps this is how Defiance should have launched initially, but that’s neither here nor there. Read on to find out what’s happening in Trion’s MMO shooter and how F2P will work in the game.

Nah... haven't really played if the last couple of months after having played for 50+ hours. Perhaps I'll hop in when I'm bored of ArcheAge *ROFLLOL* or I'll wait for F2P and see what the new influx of players might bring.
And the show is getting a second season, starts in June 2014 =-) Sad news, looks like its not gona be the same show =-

Can you play with a controller on the PC?
**
Has the game been B2P all this time or has it had a subscription?
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
The game has been like $5 or less for a long time it practically felt F2P already to me
Looks like a last ditch effort before they shut the game down later this year
O.o
In all fairness- this game has a great campaign up until and one of the best Bosses (Nim) , in the likes of handsome Jack!
Nims holograms still haunt me to this day...
So those loyal customers who paid for the game get one free month of "patron" status and then have to pay monthly...
I dont understand the games industry and how they make decisions. If you could not get enough people to pay $5 for this entire game or a DLC, why do they think people will suddenly start paying a monthly fee even if it is $5?
F2P does not = bad game. There are games I would not have tried if not for the F2P option. So many ways to pay 1-5 bucks for games now days you dont know what worth even a few bucks. I cant count how many games I have bought on my Android I would love to get some back back for. I swear some games are made just to get you to download and uninstall. I will be trying this game in June and I have yet to play it. Good Move IMO.
Over a FPS MMO? Why, not even the same type of game play. This is 100% twitch game.
Um, a Buy to Play game just went Free to Play. I'm more confused than anything.
Not only that, but it's $10. No, that's not a Steam sale number. That's from their website.
Is $10 the barrier to entry for this game? Are people really looking at it and saying, "Oh I won't spend $10 for a WHOLE game, I'd rather play for free with a cash shop that will likely charge $10 for inventory upgrades!"
The real problem with defiance is that both the game and tv show, suck.
Seems that a lot of games follow the how to get in and out to make money and forget about quality. Its rare for me to buy a game I have not tried. If open betas stopped I most likely would stop playing MMOs till they went F2P lol. I dont care how its cost me 10 bucks, all I care now days is if its worth the 10 bucks. F2P does not mean free and people need to get to learn that. Its just a way of opting in or out of paying. I will try this game for myself in June and if it sucks and I hate it, I wont buy the extra bag space, I will just uninstall =-)
Yes, it works fine with a controller. Unless things have changed quite a lot it almost requires one for some of the racing stuff. Controlling the vehicles with a mouse/keyboard is a real PITA because you can't (or couldn't, anyway, it may have changed) map the mouse to steer.
It has always been B2P, but since pretty much all meaningful rewards in-game are random boxes, also sold in a store near you, and since the box price dropped like a rock, it has always felt very F2Pish. I can't really seeing "officially" going F2P making much of any difference at all.
FWIW, it's fun for a short while, but you'll burn through the content in no time at all, there just isn't very much and the world is tiny, and, unfortunately, past that it doesn't even have the depth of a parking lot puddle. Fun while it lasts, but it lasts a very, very short while.
I might have to check it out again. One thing though it isn't going F2P but it is going freemium , just to correct them and / or you. Strange a B2P going freemium is this a first ? Adding a subb , very cool marketing none the less.
Looking forward to season 2 on syfy , very much so.
Cheers,
BadOrb.

Thanks. My curiosity is satisfied.

The game was practically f2p since months with the unlimited trial option. Ok, not fully, but the entry barrier a few mentioned above is not there since the trial went live (and it wasn't that much in the first place, 10-15 bucks for the box)
Of course I'm not sure about how will they manage it on the long run, but I do think it's a smart move. I wrote many times since the unlimited trial option got into game that with the launch of season2 there will be a player influx, since now it's only a download, and there's a chance Trion will tie the game more closely to the show.
With this f2p switch, the influx definitely will be larger, simply because they can advertise it more effectively alongside with the show. "Come and play it for free" sounds more tempting than "Come and try it out for free"
This really is strange. $10 b2p game without sub goes to freemium with sub?
The *only* reason i can see for this was if Trion was offering something like SoE all access with Rift, AA, and Defiance shared patron status.
But then they say thats not going to be the case (at least for now).
Its baffling, especially considering how meaningless Rift patron status is, that that wasnt their first thought: to tie all 3 games (and Trove) into one package. Trion isnt the only company that has a themepark, an alpha sandbox/sandpark, an alpha voxel game, and a mmo shooter.
