I like stylized and cartoony to a point, but this is just straight ACME

This game has so many good aspects. Which really sucks because its packaged in a looney toons wrapper and I can barely last an hour before I need a break from the wacky in your face style of this game. Its not just cartoony graphics, its cartoony everything. It felt like I was playing a bugs bunny game on the genesis. They were a blast, but short for a reason. I wish this game all the best though. The devs did an incredible job with their game systems. Huge props to an mmo launching with housing and a decent crafting system.

Its a shame I can't get past the style though.

Ya, it's not for everyone. I appreciate all styles though. This will be a nice game to play along side ESO for me.

The aesthetics are not my style at all but the game is too fun not to play it for a silly reason like that. Though they are not as dramatically bad as you make them out to be. The models are also quite well done... props to the artists.

If I wanted good realistic graphics and boring mechanics I'd be playing ESO.

Having fun is infinitely more important for me.

ACME - All i can think about is the Animaniacs lol. I would die a happy man if I saw or had a cutscene of a chua or Aurin yell " HEEEELLLLLLOOOOOOO NUUURRSSSEEE".

But yea  to each their own, graphics dont bother me as much as gameplay and content.

It's more Rodger Rabbit looney toons than Bugs Bunny or Road Runner which I barely consider looney toons as far as art style goes.

Honest question, what makes wildstar's mechanics more fun than ESO's? Citing the comparison implies one is vastly different than the other in this regard, in what ways would that be?

That is what makes the game work for me. The over the top style makes for a interesting backdrop to the often very gritty and brutal story (speaking form a blue PoV) after all one go around and feel happy go lucky and before you know it a wounded pregnant woman have been killed while on a med-evac.

That is not very happy go lucky.

But i can see how the style is a tad bit to much for some people... After all ESO make me want to drink... A lot... due to having a setting that is serious as a heartattack.

This have been a good conversation

I've had my problems with the graphics as well. No problem with cartoony as in Landmark, but WS is at times unnecessary over the top cartoony.

Still Wildstars' graphics will age alot better than i.e. ESO's. AoC had great graphics on launch but looked old just one year after. Same with Lotro. Rift after 2 years looked like 8+ years old. Many people noticed that when they logged in after like one year break from any of those games.

Wildstars' graphics are here to stay though. Like them or not, but in my opinion this is definately a thing Carbine did right AKA one of the good aspects they copied from WoW.

If they get their hurruble engine working and even tweak the visuals with an xpack one day, the game will still look fancy and great for years to come.

I could never get used to the combat in ESO. It felt too clunky and slow. It's worse now that I've been playing Wildstar quite a lot, ESO combat feels terrible and oh so static.

The world feels more alive and active and I find the questing more fun in Wildstar. I found it became quite tedious in ESO.  ESO has a more structured story behind each quest but I've had more than enough of that in LOTRO and single player games.

Housing is a big part of the experience.. I actually get more excited about housing drops than item drops. It's amazing how much work they put into this.

Also the dungeons are very well constructed. I really don't remember the last time I had this much fun in an instance.

Adventures are like mini dungeons with different paths and there's quite a few PvP options.

All in all, IN MY OPINION, the gameplay between the two games is night and day.

OMG WildStar is hard after playing ESO for a month and a half.  Kept trying to aim myself with the reticle.

They are very similar but feel completely different.  Need to get a higher level char with more abilities to really get a feel for WS.  Couple weeks.

It's also weird that one person will say aesthetics don't matter and half the people on this site won't touch a Korea game because it's too asiany.

Wildstar is a solid game in my opinion, but it's far too gamey for my tastes.

Fast and frantic, loud and colorful, it's like a sugar-high with food coloring and extra additives. I need a litlle lie-down after an hour of WS, lol

That's about how I feel as well. But in addition to the presentation, I also find the UI too freakin busy for my taste. A good UI can convey all pertinent data to the player without looking like a giant mess of neon and boxes. I wish the quest log and path log had the option of fading out when you're not actively killing/doing things related to that particular activity. Also it could help to provide an option to turn off the level up effects, eating effects and annoying voice overs.

Other than that I can live with the Jak and Daxter online graphics as long as the systems in place are more than a superficial novelty to show off said graphics.

You should look into the mods now. Some you can hide allot of whats on screen. I did ..I disliked the "events" always on my screen (bottom right). Things like that.

As for cartoon.. I see more Swtor for toon armor allot. I did get the WOW feeling the other day but that was from exploring and the music .. it was almost wows.

Allot of the toons I just can't play because the way they run lol. Yet if you can get sweetfx to run things like this you can get it to look awesome and turn satruration.. blah blah.. helps a tad..

i still log on in LOTRO and it still looks top notch. One thing Turbine did (i would even say among the best if not the best) is world design/art.

I can't respect someones opinion when they try and use loonie toons as an insult towards graphics or animation. Nothing can be too much like lonnie toons and be a bad thing. Not loonie toons enough...sure. They tried to go loonie toons and failed absolutely.

    Hahahahahahahah- Exactly.

I wanted to see dynamite sticks you could stick in the enemies mouth and they would blow up (not violently, but their heads would turn black and smoke a bit) and Anvils you can drop on peoples heads.

Hell, A Loony Toons MMO? With PVP? I would be so in..

On topic: I personally dont mind the art style in WS and think its fine. I am more worried about gameplay aspects (I still play MUDs so graphics are not overly important imho) but WS just doesnt do it for me for numerous reasons. It feels shallow and like a WOW clone without much identity of its own. If I want another WOW- I will play WOW.

I understand this is being marketed as a more "Hardcore WOW" with larger and better raids and such- BUT... Its not something I am looking for.

I think hardcore raiders might appreciate this game though graphics or not

When I first started seeing previews of Wildstar, the graphic style initially turned me off.

But, I have to say, after playing the game for the last few days, I really have enjoyed the character and art style.  I find it refreshing and it really works with the whole "attitude" of the game.  It doesn't take itself serious (if that makes sense) and it's even more fun because of it.

I am confused about wildstar.  I like the game, but I can not get into it for some reason.  I can play it for maybe an hour and then just say meh and logout.  I think part of it is the game runs like crap on my PC and part of it is I think I find the quests a bit annoying when leveling seems slow.  I am only about level 10 so I have not got into the good stuff yet.  I do have to say that I think the music / sound is excellent.

One thing I found horrible is the starting area on the ship.  I was in a couple betas and could not force myself to play before.  Once you get off the ship the game opens up nicely.

I tried the game out and quit when I did a quest where I was being chased by talking carrots and celeries.

I do love looney toons. I just don't want to play a loony toons mmo for x amount of months or years. Yeah that's my problem, not the game's. I fully acknowledge that.

This is actually rather funny. The thing I thought I would dislike the most about the game was the cartoony graphics and over the top nature yet it turned out to be the things I didn't mind the most about the game.

The graphics fit, the over the top nature of everything makes it feel light hearted. Its just too bad the story is weak, the combat is, while actiony, its sorely limited by a lack of skills and even more limited by few action slots. It has generic quests and it becomes boring quickly. So, looks like there are still no decent new MMOs so far this year.

I agree 1,000% with the OP. I hate the graphics in this game. Below the surface, though..it really is a great game. What you have to keep in mind, while starting out, is, the game is DESIGNED around large scale encounters. The graphics were designed the way they are because Carbine knew performance would be an issue. Large scale player encounters (especially 40) cause some level of lag on even the most advanced PC's. Wildstar was designed with that sort of mentality. Large scale quality content (rare these days) with an engine capable of handling the load. Even EQ Next seems to be following this path as well, so get used to it...
