but sometimes you have to take the girl you have not the girl you dream of.
LOL!
In my games I chose the girl that I dream of, not the girl I have. That's the great part of joining a fantasy world in a game.
I refuse anything else. It's my fun!
To me, the girl of my dreams resembles challenge and socializing, be it grinding in a group or really tough soloing if I chose that path. I don't care if I have to play a class that has the capability of soloing, if that is the case then so be it. This doesn't bother me.
If I am forced on the girl that I have, I will quit! It's that simple... Which is probably why I am not playing any MMO today.
Next for me will most likely be H1Z1. I hear it's going to have plenty of challenge.
The original EQ was just such a classic Roleplaying Game. When you look at how MMO's are built now adays, most just dont have that classic Roleplaying feel to them. They try to throw everything at the player too fast, and force-feed this idea that the player is a hero from the very start of the game.
In Classic EQ, a rat could kill you at level 1, you would miss swings, your spells would fizzle, your mana would fluctuate randomly like your magic was reluctant to work properly; you were a mess in other words.
You didnt start off killing a badass monster, you started off as all real hero's do, with merely a will and no way in sight but what random path you walked down.
You would talk to NPC's, read and listen to what they said carefully, and then you would talk back to them. It wasnt much, but if you chose to, you could roleplay your character to the NPC's, they felt alive and they always had something inspiring or intriguing to point out to you.
There wasnt a clear cut level above each enemies head, you would simply "Consider" the enemy, and the game would give you an estimate of what would happen in the fight, almost like a second consciousness in the game saying things like "Well you could try to kill it, but its defiently a gamble". It wasnt a cut and dry system, it wasnt reduced to hard numbers, it was a choice, one that you made not always knowing the complications of your actions, this was a REAL choice.
Then you would finally get proficient at what you were doing, you would start to hit the target more, you magic would grow stronger and more controlled. You'd get a pet maybe, and try to attack a small gnoll camp on your own. You would take a couple of them, and feel a sense of accomplishment when you almost had the fight in your favor, and then it would happen...
A Skeleton would come out of nowhere, just randomly wadering the zone to happen upon you in the midst of the hardest fight of your in game life, and in one strike he would take you down, proving to you that you were not that powerful, not yet, you were going to need help.
In a flash of black you would die and be without all your spells, knowledge, and gear. You would run back to your corpse, gather up all your belongings, relearn your spells, and take some time to learn from your mistakes, or maybe not, but eventually with enough time you would.
You might get a friend to help you next time, or maybe just a stranger, maybe by luck a passerby would buff you with some helpful enchantments, you didnt know, but you knew when you saw another player they were going through or - had gone through - alot of the same experiances of loss and challenge, and that alone made it part of the experiance. Other players werent constantly competing with you, they had enough competition in the world to worry about, and you were just another player in this universe's immense struggle.
This is what EQ was about, and all I want is that same game but with better graphics. A game rich with exploration, conflict, choices, and a sense of danger and philosophy. A game that is more than a show of numbers and who has the better gear, but an authentically immersive experiance.
I preferred Asheron's Call. The questing was better, the loot system was vastly better, the world was larger, You didn't need to spend hours camping the same mobs, you didn't need to group to be successful. And it did all the other things you mentioned as well.
AC was just a much better game, sadly SOE had more money to advertise and it attracted more because of that.
With that said, I feel you. I want a new ASHERON'S CALL with updated graphics. I'd be happy
I believe I only played Asheron's Call 2. I can't really speak for AC1, but I didn't like AC2 much. I enjoyed EQ a lot because it had a forgotten realms type setting and was modeled heavily after DnD 2nd edition. There were a lot of other reasons, but I never had to group in EQ. I spent most of my time there solo other then helping people, asking for ports, asking for buffs, and trading with people.
AC2 was horrible. It was nothing like AC1. AC1 was truly the most awesome MMO I ever played. SO much win in that game it isn't even funny. What I loved about AC1 the most was that you weren't required to or forced to group. I've heard plenty of stories and I even played DAoC so I understand the pain and monotony of being forced to group to level. Worst game design I've ever experienced.
Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!
Subscription Gaming, especially MMO gaming is a Cash grab bigger then the most P2W cash shop!
Bring Back Exploration and lengthy progression times. RPG's have always been about the Journey not the destination!!!
If only there was somebody well-acquainted with the development of Everquest, who understood its guiding principles and had a knack for designing old-school games. Then he could put together an indie team of devs dedicated to bringing back the old EQ feel with today's modern graphics. Could even try getting said project Kickstarted. People would surely turn out in droves to play the very sort of game they've been repeatedly pining for on these forums! Oh... wait.
I get it, I get it. Brad. But from the outside looking in it starts to seem as if this desire for a new EQ or old-school title is destined to be forever thwarted as people find excuse after excuse why this game or that doesn't pass muster. A person could be forgiven for doubting the broad appeal of an EQ Reboot when pretty much every other idea has found traction, such as games from other niches(Camelot Unchained), presumably dead genres (Elite: Dangerous, Star Citizen), niche of niches (Face of Mankind), and even tech demos (Pathfinder Online).
I think there's a lot of room to improve on EQ while keeping the hardcore/challenge/danger of it all but I would buy Original EQ with better graphics and a modern UI - I'd rather have that than the single player pseudo-MMORPG trash and especially the F2P trash that infect the genre.
Premium MMORPGs do not feature built-in cheating via cash for gold pay 2 win. PLAY to win or don't play.
I agree with the OP, but I didn't play EQ is Asheron's Call for me and my friends. I always felt like I was being challenged and could die at any time. I remember day one, my friend met my brother and I, level 1 newbies and buffed us up, and said welcome to the game! Now go kill rabbits for a while!" Ah Them were the days!
At least use an anagram. For example, "Boy, Crop Jet 9919 sure is an absurdly fun nostalgia-laden blast from the past! Someone even mentioned that Winter is coming?! Oh, whatever could that mean?"
To the OP, I think anyone could update the graphics engine and graphics without changing the game itself... however I doubt if a new coat of paint is going to really change anything in reality. If the old game was a gem, it's still worth playing with the old graphics engine/graphics. Blizzard us repainting their game but its not making the game better... if anything, it will turn off a lot of old timers who are used to the way it used to look.
I play a really old game that plays just fine today... all it lacks is other players... that's it. And in the end, that is the real death nell to any game... a lack of players... not mechanics, not housing, not looks... players. If people had the capacity to rally their friends to play a game together and keep them playing it together, even the oldest and simplest of games would remain fun. Problem is, we're all to flighty these days, hopping on the new band wagon as soon as it arrives, giving no game a chance and quite honestly, not really caring about playing with friends at all in the end... just passing the time away.
That's the big difference these days... no one is interested in community anymore because they can find it under every rock they come across. Back in the day, that wasn't so true... people saw the old EQ as the facebook and twitter of today. If they wanted to chat online, MMOs was the place to be. Not anymore today. You say other games compete with games... twitter, cell phones, the internet, et al all compete with games... and the games are losing the battle by a very long shot.
I actually just had to go look at all the games you mentioned and HOLY SHIT, I did not realize there were so many kickstarted MMO's on the horizon.
Surely if a game like Face of Mankind could be kickstarted, a Classic EQ type game could be as well.
It gives me hope for The Far Reaches as well, seeing a game like Face of Mankind being kickstarted with only a 60k budget.
A classic EQ style game would be find with me, just as long as the writing isnt amateur, because the writing in EQ's NPC dialogue was incredibly well written. And frankly indie teams seem to stress with good writing, so it has to be a project of passion.
Also I wonder why there isnt more Fan-Fare for Camelot Unchained? I guess because there isnt any gameplay videos or anything just yet, but the concept sounds amazing!
I got a 50 Druid back in Vellious. I was addicted to Evercrack so hardcore in high school.
I tried EQ Project 1999 for about 10 seconds. Let's just say there's some truth to the idea of "Rose Colored Glasses." There's a reason WoW took off while EQ was the granddaddy that got the 3D MMO started. Simply put: the gameplay was only good because it had no competition.
That being said, I agree completely with what you say in spirit. Give me another MMO that doesn't treat you as a hero. Doesn't hold your hand. Where it's actually hard, you need other players... just update both the graphics and the gameplay. Rather than challenging 1-2 minute fights followed by 5-15 minutes of downtime, go with challenging 20-30 second fights with minimal downtime. And, have a similar, brutal punishment for death.
I would play a game that tries to innovate upon the EQ model rather than the WoW one. Unfortunately, no game's ever going to do that again... so long as crappy WoW clones like Wildstar and ESO keep doing well.

I think the reason CU has gone somewhat silent is because there was quite a lot of fanfare at the beginning when the game was first being Kickstarted. Right now, there's just not a whole lot for us on these forums to talk or debate about. I do feel like KS provides the best opportunity to see just how various games resonate with the public, especially for niche titles that are too risky for big publishers to tackle. Something like the Repopulation could easily have been added to the list and, IMO, is far more promising than SOE's H1Z1.
OT: If there's one game I miss and would love to see properly revisited, it's the City of X titles. It wasn't my first or even all-time favorite title but it's without a doubt the one that's left the biggest gameplay and community void.

I know exactly what you mean, CoH came out right at the cusp of WoW getting big, but luckily had long enough without WoW on the scene to garner a cult following and provide something truely unique.
I mean I still have a bunch of the comics they sent you in the mail, and always looked forward to getting a new one every month. I still havent found an MMO that did something that outside the box and fun as actually sending you a new monthly comic, it made the sub-fee worth it for real.
EQ, CoH, and SWG are the three games that I feel need more spin offs, and updated versions. All of these games provided a new medium for MMO's, revolutionized things in different ways, yet kept the core elements of what makes an MMO unique alive while they were popular.
Hopefully kickstarter and other forms of crowd funding will provide us with some new experiances, and take something from these games that were "Before the fall", as it were.
I want an evolved EQ. No, I don't want classic EQ with updated graphics. But I want something very similar. And no nothing like the EQ that is today. Ugh, that game is wretched now.
I just can not express how sad i am that EQN is not going to be a real Everquest game.
No levels.
No trinity.
Console Controls with very limited buttons.
Everyone can be everything and change at will.
Action combat.
Apart from maybe Nr. 1 those are all reasons i hate current gen MMOs. The Advanced AI they are talking about sure sounds good, but damn! Nothing can make up for points 2-5, no matter what. RIP Everquest, i sure miss you.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
We been wishing for EQ1 with ESO or AOC graphics for a long time. Not sure why they keep trying to change something that works. Its like why don't they put the modern technology from the new camero's into the 1967 SS bodys : (
Originally posted by midnitewolfHonestly I think alot of people would like to see an upgraded version of vanilla EQ. However, vanilla EQ also had some issues. The lack of ability to solo AT ALL unless you were one of a handful of classes was a bit much. Also a Death Penalty where you could lose a day or more of progression with just a tad bad luck was over the top. Don't get me wrong, the penalty should be harsh enough you absolutely DID NOT WANT TO DIE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE but you could accomplish that with a few hours of lost XP, not days worth of lost XP. Also, I think there should have been skills/spells awarded at every level rather than every 4 levels especially with such an extensive grind. Finally the grind itself needed to be toned down just a bit, probably by about half. I mean 2-3 years of hard play to reach max level honestly was a bit much. A year though seems just about right, especially with the AA system that offered a basically never ended progression even after you reached max level. Also group play with downtime is a requirement, though I don't think we need 3-5 mins between pulls.Design and offers that game and I will be a proud subscriber within 30 seconds of it being playable.
I completely agree about the Death-Penalty. I done think you should lose a level from Death, or even a days worth of play, but I think 10% of your exp or a fixed number is fair. This is one of those things where it sounds hypocritical for me to say I want "Exactly Vanilla EQ" with better graphics. But no game is perfect and I think its well documented enough that losing a level or a days worth of EXP for a single death is poor design. Still if 95% of what made Vanilla EQ is there, with better graphics, I will consider that a glorious victory for MMO's.
No no no, if you remove the possibility to lose levels then you lose the original EQ. It would have to be a must.
Why? because that death penalty was:
harsh enough you absolutely DID NOT WANT TO DIE UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE
You never step in the same river twice. NewOldEQ wouldn't be any different.
I'd certainly have no interest, as invetigating UO and EQ keept me away from MMOs for nearly 5 years. Both were shot through with problems and issues; though as pioneers you'd have to expect that. Many of you devoutedly want the fossilized bad parts as well as the fossilized good parts.
Unless you can convince folks that it will return a decent profit, no one will make these retro-futurist games. Because they like to eat too.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
I agree with OP but i think many ppl will stay away from it. Times have changed. Ppl dont care much for guilds or communities and they are not stick much to a single game. They rather prefer to play casually more than only one game and the market is full of games anymore.
Anyway i think it could be great having a 2014 vanilla EQ

The closest you can get is Vanguard. Or until Pantheon: Rise of the Fallen comes out.
Honestly though, EQ1 had serious design flaws. Sadly, those flaws were adopted and popularized by WoW, so we're stuck with them either way.
I'd rather have a remade DAoC, with the PvE mechanics made a bit deeper, more like EQs. But its design was near perfect.
