My parents think I have issues playing WoW due to Elliot Oliver

bronzephishybronzephishy Member UncommonPosts: 64

I've been playing WoW for 4 years now...I'm a normal 21 year old that just loves to play mmos or. Video games in general. My parents are starting to question my mental state just because the shooting that occurred in California recently...I keep telling them if fine just because you see me in my room playing WoW for hours doesn't mean I'm unstable...I'm perfectly normal I just enjoy WoW.  They say I might need to see a therapist....SIGH not to mention I found this article on our home living room PC they were reading this article and I think paranoid due to the incident...sucks that I can't play WoW and feel normal

"He was intensely jealous of any boy who had a girlfriend, especially those who boasted that they were having sex. As high school went on, he retreated deeper and deeper into the world of multiplayer online role-playing games, his favorite being World of Warcraft, which he would play for hours upon hours, and which he would dream of when he was forced to leave it behind on family trips overseas, according to the manifesto."

i copied and pasted the article....I guess I need to go skateboarding or something else feels strange my parents loon at me as a depressed 21year old kid

It sounds like they care about you, sadly they are taking the "if you play wow your going to kill people" a bit to...seriously. If you read the news report that guy had EVERYTHING handed to him. It takes a special person to snap and do what he or any one that goes on a killing spree. WoW has nothing to do with it directly, other then possibly adding unneeded stress unhim if he was big on raiding.

Wow, or video games are not and never have been the issue. Guns are not the issue.

Mentally disturbed people do..crazy stuff. Thats the issue. All the rest are just people looking to put a quick answer that sounds good on it.

To the OP, just be glad that your folks care enough to ask:). Lot of people now a day's just do not seem to take the time to talk to their families any more.

Well to be fair I did rush my mom to get hometo make my raid schedule and she advised me that I'm taking WoW way to serious but the whole talk they had with me in the car was uncomfortable. I told them I'm not Elliot Oliver and just because I play WoW I'm not psycho...dad intervened and said just take a break from it is all we are asking...really? seriously I'm fine

You might have to shoot them. WoW is life. j/k..

Reminds me about way back when I was in a game "clan" and my parents though I've joined some sort of gang lol.

Talk to them more about what games you are playing, what you are doing in them and why. It'll help make it more comfortable when the topic comes up for both of you. And it won't hurt to take a break. ;) Makes getting back into the game later more satisfying.

Op- Dont take this the wrong way but you seem to think of yourself s a Kid .

Your parents have no choice as to if you "see a therapist" or not and a 21 year old man would make that descision for himself.

Time to move out, I think.

Way over simplified. Plenty of people have issues and the vast majority of them don't go on a killing spree.  If you listen to what's going on. This started very early on. A history of events bad choices whatever and no one regrounded him. Of course people in certain situations often don't think clearly.  That's not uncommon!!! It happens a lot and can happen to anyone.  A break up? Fight with friends. Yet no mass murders. Having money doesn't stop someone from being human.  The guy just needed help. Those around him who knew him who should have been able to and probably could tell something was seriously wrong.

In the end he's a piece of shit for going the route he did. He knew what he was doing was wrong most likely.  I'm not trying to justify anything. Not taking his side. Just to many people out there with issues and every now and then one boils over chooses a very bad route and you just damned anyone with any sort of label?

Hint: At a given point in time anyone of us can likely be labeled with some sort of mental illness.  Depression is pretty common.

people who watch TV have less of a grasp on reality then those who play video games...

Next time the conversation comes up just explain to them why you like playing mmos. If you have an intelligent conversation with them and give them about why you play and answer their questions with solid responses you can get them to understand your point of view. Dont play defensive within the topic, look at both sides and give your responses based on both, If you have a talk like this with your parents they will realize you are engaging in a hobby and its nothing to worry about. Intellectual responses to serious question whilst also assuring to your parents you understand their point of view and giving them sound logic will surely give them peace of mind.

Do you live with your parents? Sounds like you do. Think it as their subtle way of telling, "You're 21, get your own place, now GTFO".

Nobody that is crazy actually thinks they are crazy. They label themselves as a normal 21 year old kid and people just dont understand.

You say you need to play wow to feel normal? Your parents might be on to something. They are usually smarter than the 21 year old that thinks they know everything.

about a decade ago this older guy I knew and respected said something off the wall and at the time I thought he was a bit off on what he said.

He said 'TV is designed to separate people from each other, even more so between generations putting parents against children'

Now that I am older I see what he means.

TV news is terrible...flat out terrible.

Do some google searches and find a few of the many articles that point to the benefits of gaming, its much better than watching TV.

Here's another article that blames the shooting on WoW.

    http://www.wnd.com/2014/05/santa-barbara-slayer-mimicking-warcraft-character/

I have been playing video games since I was 6 years old, so over 35 years of playing video games since the Pac Man and Asteroid days and I still do not have the urge to kill anymore. I'm so a big fan of the adult movie industry and have no urge to kill anyone.

Stop blaming the Adult Entertainment Industry and Video game just because some people are crazy!

Now the NRA on the other hand...

    Pretty much this.

OP, just explain to them that there have been mentally ill people doing horrible things before video games (I'm sure they will know of many instances in their past) and pretty much say straight out "Have I ever acted violently? Have I ever done anything to warrant concern?

    They'll see reason.

At 21 I had my own life.  On my own, my own place, with a job and a girlfriend.  She left me because of games, I lost that job because of games, I lost my home because of games.  I found my self living at home with my parents again...and a pile of dept to show for my failure.  Lesson learned, at least I learned it...on my own.  Games are a moderational type thing...who determens the moderation?  You do.  Don't forget the difference between reality and WoW gold.

Somethings definitely off. I don't see how any rational person links games to this.  He explained why he did what he did. The reasons. I don't see how anyone links much to this other than this guy being a  piece of shit who decided to take a very dark route as a solution.

Without knowing the background of the OP I'll just assume the positive - Community college, making living at home a perfectly reasonable choice. I'm not going to jump all over someone randomly. Guessing this is trolling anyway, but just in case...

There are plenty of reasons to play MMO's. It's a cheap form of entertainment, spending $15 a month to get 60 hours of entertainment if you play two hours a day. You said you're a raider, so I'm guessing 120+ hours, but time spent isn't really the concern. If you're stable I don't think it matters how often you play. It's also nice to have friends online, to go with your group of friends offline - personally I don't like to intertwine the two to include either entire group. I have my quiet geeky side, and my athletic outspoken side. They don't mesh seamlessly with the majority of friends on either side.

You could tell them that flirting with women that play Warcraft builds your confidence, and makes you happy. If you're in the closet you can also explain that flirting with women who are actually men is very beneficial for you.

I'll agree with the person who said that having your parents react in the first place is a good thing, even if it is annoying. If they were that easily swayed I think they can just as easily be swayed back by an opposing article, if not by your own points. Heck, make a page yourself and then link it to them if you don't think they'll take you seriously, but obviously trust everything they read on the internet. Hey, at least they care.

I'm going to offer an alternate opinion as well. You should go to therapy. Either the therapist will assure them you're fine, or you'll be able to talk openly about this or any other issue you might have. I personally don't see the downside of going. If you're okay it's short-lived. If not, perhaps it will help - and you'll get some medication. Nothing wrong with that.

Ok, read the artical (http://www.dailynews.com/general-news/20140524/sheriffs-officials-santa-barbara-shooter-elliot-rodger-killed-three-at-apartment-before-rampage )   and there are 2 key phrases here..."Elliot Oliver Roberstson Roberts, the son of a Hollywood director", and , "Rodger sits inside his BMW, looks straight into the camera and delivers a cold message of revenge."

The kid is 22, you think he bought that BMW on his own?  And it doesn't mention anything about video games.

Hope that's being sarcastic, because blaming an organization which promotes the safe and responsible ownership of firearms and participation in hunting & shooting sports by law abiding citizens for some whackjob going off the deep end because he couldn't get laid is just as stupid and narrow-minded as blaming video games and porn.

This Post sounds like a cry for help from you. Most stable people wouldn't go out of their way to post publicly that their parents think they are nut cases. Maybe you should get some therapy as its obvious you are deeply craving attention.

Indeed, I don't work but I'm going to community college.  I personally don't want to go to a therapist because its a waste of time. I'm a normal person. I appreciate their concern but its to the point where they are over reacting to me playing admittingly long hours...I'm a raider and my little episode of me rushing my mom to get home so I don't miss my raid just fueled more suspicion after the shooting incident.  I do play to much I admit I take raiding serious. Just for the very reason I sit at home and play PC for hours don't Lookto great in most parents eyes....as far as me skateboarding I found a comfort level as skateboarding at a young age. I'm not athletic person I'm not a jock but I'm good at skateboarding and getting fresh air and sun I enjoy it even at age 21. But I guess I'm the voice for others who are perceived as a mental case about to go crazy and start killing people just because I spend most of my time in WoW. Like I'm lost in this fantasy world...
