Host a EMU SWG server!

Ok, here is the catch, I just won the Lotto, yes I did, I want my dream come true, I want to experience the game of the year again with my family.
I will pay 250,000 dollars to anyone who can create SWG Pre CU private server. Not CU not NGE only Pre CU.

Please send me a PM as soon as you can, I will pay for any cost in making this happen.

Completely untrue. He could put a big ass sign on a building across the street from SOE's headquarters saying he's RUNNING a private server, and they can't do crap, if he's not making money from it.

Yeah, but with the right number of lawyers and a large checkbook, they can keep you from taking a dump if they tried hard enough.

Of course they can do crap, he's pretty much stolen the server software.  Microsoft doesn't excuse people when they're nailing people for pirating their software privately, nor do the Record Labels when you're downloading music privately.

LOL well at least until Mr. Lucas showed up and said:

"Hmm, oh is that a Jedi in your nice little game on a private a server ? Uhm ok sure, that's cool, I'll be right back." Evil grin on his face as he walks away.

A day later a platoon from the Lucas Arts legal department shows up and quickly informes the newly rich that his life now belongs to them... end of story. :)

It's one thing to mess around with SOE or another game company, but to screw with LA, that's just plain stupid.

Not true. I can do anything I want with characters that are "Jedi" as long as I dont:
    A) Release it as a competing product IE affect or damage the ability for Lucas Arts to "Profit" from Jedi.
    B) Sell it in any way.

I could play "Jedi" in my back yard, write stories, draw pictures, or even make personal video games for me and my friends. I could paint a life size princess Lea on my wall with a light saber in one hand and a bottle of scotch in the other and Geroge couldn't do a darn thing.

You can be sued by an artist/designer/creator over theft/misuse of intellectual property. In part this is why you're not meant to sell SWG items on ebay and why people have teh rider ontheir sale sayin gthat it's not the item but the time spent that you are paying for.

Pretty much the same as Disney suing nursery schools (kindergarten) over the use of Disney characters in murals.

    Disney articles on Snopes

And, REALLY reaching here as its a while since it mattered to me but as part of the enforcement of the owner of copyrights right to redress they can apply, in some jurisdictions, for a warrant given them access to premises in order to look for unlicensed items. Originally introduced to combat software piracy under copyright legislation but extended out to cover other counterfiet/fake items. Regardless of whether the person creating them has 'profited' from them or not. (Otherwise the defence in cases where Hilfiger, Disney, Lucas are trying to clamp down on fake items would be "I've not made any money from it")

At the end of the day however it could just come down to a contest to see who has the deepest pockets, you or Lucas...

Well having your own private SWG pre CU server sounds cool, and yes you could do what you want and keep others out. However what happenes when the server goes down? You will need a IT manager and they cost money so you would need to let a few people play to cover his costs.

I am sure he might want a drink or a snack while working so to hire a cook and allow a few more to play might be the best way to cover costs. Well now with the increased player load you will need to buy more bandwidth so a few more will have to play to increase the operating expenses. Maybe a cop to keep you friends from playing but alas more would need to play to pay the cop. Next thing you know it is not a private server and you are every unhappy and unrespected.  Hey this sounds like a good idea for a cartoon...image

I'd never thought I would side with Obraik on anything, but this time he's right.

That does not stop me from loving the idea and playing one if it actually surfaced.  I remember playing on UO clandestine servers for a while.

SOE knows what you like... You don't!
And don't forget... I am forcing you to read this!

Yeah!  That time that you admitted that you were doing PR for SOE and the game sucks, servers are empty and SOE are incompetent bufoons!  Last week you admitted that and I agreed with you!   LOL    imageimage

Making an emulated server of SWG is like nearly impossible. lol. Believe me, i've been exploiting swg for years...

Your better off funding a group of people to make a game LIKE SWG Pre-CU lol.

    A) It could be directly argued that he is taking customers away from SWG.

    B) You don't have to sell anything to break the law.  Where  the heck does this misconception keep coming from?

    C) Star Wars is the intellectual property of LEC.  If he tries this they can say 'sure you can have the game running on your own server but first take out every reference to any Star Wars iconic item in the game.'.

He's smoking dope.  Mess with SOE, hell mess with Blizzard... but you start messing with LEC and you're playing with friggen fire.  There is NO other entity as friggin prone to sue as LucasArts.  They have shut down NUMEROUS fan sites for hosting Star Wars content.

Trust me, this guy is playing with fire.

Sorry but you're wrong. As long as there is no commercial aspect and no public damage to int. property, no law is broken. And to the guy that brought up Disney sueing day care centers, let me remind you that day carecenters are business instutitions, not personal ones. I can paint Mickey Mouse all over my kids room and the suits at Disney couldn't do a thing.

I'm not smoking aything. Geroge Lucas owns the PUBLIC rights to Jedi. You can not copywright enforce what pepole do privatly. Ever heard of Fan Fic?

You bunch of suedo lawyers amuse me. Go back to packing grocries and let the adults talk this one out.

If the servers are written from scratch, nothing could be done. Just ask a Linux guy. Of course wirting this game from scratch would take a single guy about 20 years and no single person on the planet has all the necessary diciplens under his belt but hey it's all fantasy anyway.

It's not the same thing Ch3cksix.  What this person is talking about is stealing the code from SOE's servers, repackaging it on a private server and using it.  It's illegal and liable for a lawsuit.  Think of it this way, by your reasoning, then I could just buy any software on a store, copy it onto a bunch of CDRs and distribute it for free to my friends and fam.  That's called software piracy and it's illegal.

    duncan-922,

Yes you're absolutly right.  You can not steal the code.  I was stating you could rewrite the game for personal use and use LucasArts material for it.  If I mis understood the post I'm sorry.

My sig has graphics in it made public by Lucasarts as part of the hype for EPIII.  It's not a game that they currently run for profit.  By launching his own instance of SWG this person would be directly infringing on LucasArts IP.

All that matters is I would play on that box.  I could care less what they do to him.

    isn't that the "point"

SOE should take him 250k and give him one.

I would pay 50 $ a month in a heartbeat to play a pre cu server.   I couldnt give a rats ass whether or not it is legal either.   What they did to the game should be illegal.   At least thats my opinion.   image
