Smed once again proving he's the biggest dbag in the MMO industry. First they try and play this off as a game aimed at swg fans? LOL. Then they say the game will be ready for early access around may. It is almost july and no early access release anywhere in sight. The hype for this is already dieing fast because SoE is just plain stupid in the way they handle the games they develop and publish. It is pretty sad that the game isn't even good enough for alpha early access.
This is nothing more than a shameless DayZ ripoff and then they want to do micro transactions on top of charging for alpha? Get fukd SoE.
Don't get me wrong because I am following this one with interest but how can anyone say this game has permadeath. It has a cash shop. No way is anyone ever going to lose their character permenantly. Lets be honest with terminology at the very least. I refuse to believe that people will lose items permenantly that they have purchased with real money. When people say permadeath it means rerolling a character. In this and other games like it you simply respawn.

Well, the developer in the interview said it had permadeath. Whether you want to believe them is your call. You can bury your stuff lock it up. But if you die, that stash is up for grabs and all you retain when you die is your name. But again, thats just what the developer of the game is saying. >.>
A deep and meaningful crafting system (just like SWG)
A open character development (according to soE... Just like SWG)
Interesting PvP mechanics (that i would claim outstrips SWG by a mile)
deep meaningful crafting system - LOL please its put stick into one spot put metal scrap into another slot and boom you have a knife. there is nothing deep or meaningful about H1Z1s crafting. SWG had resource quality, interdependancy between crafters and experimentation
Open character development - LOL i don't know what game you are watching but H1Z1 has NO character development. SOE has already said numerous times they don't want exp or a skill system in the game
Interesting PVP mechanics - come on really? the game is open PVP its going to become a deathmatch on most servers just like DayZ or Rust where as soon as you see another person they are going to try and kill you. there is nothing interesting about that at all.
I'm not the target demographic for this MMO but I wish I was. So many good ideas brought down by (to me) so many showstopping concepts. First among them, community-policing and permadeath.
It sounds good on paper, but the amount of griefing will make this unbearable. If they could put in some well designed anti-griefing mechanics, then it could work.
Well to be honest... Apart from the Star wars bit... that we know will not come back. It has the following features
A big open world to explore (just like SWG.. ok SWG had its world instanced in to different "planets" but in the end it is the same thing)
A deep and meaningful crafting system (just like SWG)
A open character development (according to soE... Just like SWG)
Interesting PvP mechanics (that i would claim outstrips SWG by a mile)
So in my mind it is a nice game for the people who liked SWG... That is not the same as being a good game for the people who want a carbon copy SWG or a new SW MMO... But they never claimed that either.
SWG vet here aswell.
Personaly think it wasn't smart move from Smed to speak about SWG Vets can come home....unless there is another MMORPG in the making nobody has spoken of?
But I do not want a carbon copy of SWG, I want that what SWG presented, which to me was virtual world. Yet it didn't have permadeath which to me is a good thing. I like to be that crafter when it comes to the more sandbox type of games. And since I always play solo the first couple of months due to wanting to have a good understanding of the game, it's mechanics/feature's and build. I would not survive long because the majority will most likely be into combat asap. Which means to me it's far from coming home sort of speak.
Now back to the game as is.
Think it can be a very fun game, from the looks of it they seem to mix abit of State of Decay with DayZ, atleat to me. Btut for now nothing tells me it's a game I want to play. Hope it succeeds like I wish that for every game for any type of player.
Permanent death won't work on a mmo, imagine your character surviving for a few hundred hours and your local isp goes down and you were just about to aoe some mobs.

Yes, I know but everyone makes mistakes with terminology while explaining things at times, even devs. I saw the stream (e3 I think) where the dev said that they were tossing around the idea that store bought items would be lootable from players corpses. Just the items would have a degraded durability. Myself I won't believe that people will actually lose their bought and paid for cosmetic items till a dev has actually adressed this question directly. The question that needs to be asked and answered is, "will you lose cash shop items you have purchased when you die?"
Seriously, I guess if you can be optimistic about this game, you can be optimistic about any game any where.
As to the laughable subject of permadeath. That feature will be dropped before it gets into beta. No sane developer implements this feature, especially with a cash shop. Argue all you want, it most definitely won't be in the released version. Even SOE and Smedley aren't that nuts.
I really hope this is NOT the title for SWG vets. I loved PvPing, PvEing, but most of all the crafting in SWG. If I can lose everything to some ganker/griefer, when I have the best resource spot, I will not be happy. I really hope someone, sometime, can give us the same or similar crafting system in SWG, because I loved it. Making the best armour, food etc on the server was excellent, and made lots of money. You could actually be a crafter as a prof, not just killing things (which I also liked!).
As someone posted above, I think to make it more "survival" oriented, get rid of firearms. If you want to pk, attack in numbers with bats and hammers. Make the same thing that caused the zombie outbreak to render munitions inoperable.
I'm in the 'This sounds less and less interesting the more they talk about it' camp. The SWG comparison doesn't affect me, but I could see it really being irritating to old school SWG players.
On the other hand, DayZ has sold like gangbusters in both the mod and standalone alpha version, so maybe they see that as a real market to hit.
Just don't think I am that market. Too bad, I like zombie stuff. The version they are talking up? Not so much.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Writer of this article hasn't kept up to date, SOE annouced on reddit that game will have different servers with different rules aka permadeath server, no guns, pve only, roleplay etcetc....

That was a given from day one unless you like your total population to stay a four digit number.
Any way as i posted back on the first page... Going by what we know now it is not unfair to call it a spiritual successor. It has many of the components of SWG minus the setting and the IP.
So let´s be honest... It is not like SoE treated any classes apart from the combat ones particularly well... And the further removed from combat you where the worse it gets... How do i know... My main was a Image Designer/Tailor and my alt was a entertainer... .. . The ID content was never finished... The Entertainer was given up on and the devs simply just told people to get a buff-mule instead.
Tailors ha NO real updates beyond what was bare essential when a new race was introduced.
So i would not touch a new SWG game with a 10 foot pole... I do not very much enjoy playing a game where the developer flat out says that they cant figure out a way to make your playstyle appealing in any way to they will just recommend people to bot your path instead. H1Z1 at least does not seem to have that problem for now. It will perhaps have but for now it is actually looking fairly well.

I have Zero faith in SOE or Smedly. We will see but not going to hold my breath.

This could end up being very interesting.

I dunno....
... I actually LIKE the sound of this one. If it's free to play, I'm doubly intrigued.

Starwars ... Sandbox ... ok I see the relationship to H1Z1 /boggle
That being said I am intrigued after my days on DayZ which is a lot of fun in one hell of a frustrating way
Color us The Repopulation, that is for SWG fans.

He was referring to H1Z1
