[Column] Guild Wars 2: Ready to mount up?

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Guild Wars 2 isn’t always serious.  There are plenty of ways for players to goof off with  large collections of minis, or throwing food at others while wearing a costume!  Players have even spent a lot of time mastering the instruments, playing songs for the digital world to hear!  Players have done all of these things, even while wearing Charr plush backpacks!  Ya, the game has some pretty silly things, but why do so many people get mad when you mention adding mounts to the gem store?

The Necrid Horseman was one of my favorite enemies visually from the original series.

The game world is already so small, why would you need a mount?

As long as I can buy the fastest rvrvr mount I'm happy, I wwould pay $1000 to be 10 times faster than everyone else.

Every time i see gw 1 images in gw 2 discussion it makes me cry a little .What once was a unique game became cater to all soulless mmo. On the topic if mounts are cash shop only it's wrong even if it's cosmetic it's as same as give everyone same looking armor and say you need to pay for any looks

I gotta say, the world itself is relatively small and mounts aren't necessary. But WvW area definitely needs it. It's just so boring running around there looking for a fight. Would be so much better to get into the action quicker.

The reason why, is in the comments here already;  apparently you can write "no speed boost, not about getting around faster, not to make the world 'smaller'" however many times you want, and worded in a million different ways – somehow people still just talk exactly about those things.

I think it's some sort of complex stemming from the fact that GW1 didn't have a Z-axis. Somehow the playerbase is conditioned to argue against these sort of things, go figure.

  • itssantositssantos Member UncommonPosts: 84

Just add them to shut people up and take their money.

No speed bonus just pure cosmetic and removed once you enter combat.

No idea what the big pull is for mounts in a game that has  plenty of passive movement skills and way points all over the map.

This is the only mmo that I wont even bother with a mount.everywhere I go I love to go on foot.Another problem is mobs are close together imo so if your gonna have mounts the chars will be getting knocked off constantly.wont effect me either way if peeps want them or not i'll still enjoy the game.

mounts felt great when MMOs used to have vast expanses of nothing in the environment that you had to traverse

now all maps and zones are built to be as convenient as possible in that regard, mounts just seem to be something for jack offs to show off

    get rid of em

There are already mounts in the game; i've been going around with my witch broom for well over a year :3
  • tv2zulutv2zulu Member UncommonPosts: 73
There already is a mount in GW2 by the way, the flying broom from the Halloween outfit ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GkPDIOlJRY )  – so what is being argued really isn't about yes or no to mounts, but the limits of the cosmetic style of said mounts.

I think it would be more important to give a passive 25% move speed signet to everyone. Being forced to use certain weapons for swiftness or wasting points on traits for speed is lame. On some chars I can just switch to the speed signet when I have to run for a longer time but some professions are not that lucky...

adding mounts to the gem store is ok because the game relies on the gem store.

HOWEVER, that must not be the only way to get cool looking mounts.

PLUS, adding mounts to the game must come with a significant decrease in the amount of teleport waypoints in every map. Make them scarce and only for some key points to teleport.

I wouldnt mind having ground mounts in GW2, sometimes i get tired of walking everywhere and i only use teleports to t ravel long distances like from LA to Orr and stuff like that. Other than that i use Asura gates whenever possible.

Im up for a Dolyak ride.

I love mounts. It would be nice to ride past the mobs so I am not being harassed so much. especially when I'm trying to get somewhere FAST

I love mounts, not even for the sake of travel but just to have them.  They are great for RP players too.

I really don't get why there are no mounts.  If them gem store had mounts their sale for gems would go up significantly.

Would be even cooler to be able to tame mounts.  Speaking of taming - what the hell is with the Ranger taming...run up to an animal and 'charm' it.  Quiverless archers?  Wtf Anet?

IMO GW2 should have done away with the waypoint system and implemented mounts. Waypoints make Tyria feel extremely small. It is one of those modern MMO conveniences that detracts from the world.

Plus mounts are just fun! Especially so if the can be leveled and customized. Really ANet how many weapon and armor skins do we need.

I would love if they added them as rewards for certain more difficult or enjoyable content. Adding them to the gem store as an optional buyout for those with the money would be fine as well. For me Gw2 just lacks rewards that make playing through the content worthwhile. Mounts would go a ways to fixing that, but if its just added to the gem shop, I won't even bother. Imho.

no no and no..call this nerd rage like you already did in your post, but it wont change the fact that the way points get you near the action(world bosses. events etc) fast and easy and cheap, you basically do not run around much thanks to WP.
as for leveling enjoy the beautiful world and learn your class in open world and get world completion at same time. again nooooo to traditional mmo stuff, LEAVE US ALONE PLEASE.you wow players.

Screw mounts, they still don't even have polymock working yet.

Mounts are the only thing that GW2 has been missing in comparison to other titles! Bring it!
  • NephaeriusNephaerius Member UncommonPosts: 1,671
Mounts would serve absolutely no purpose in GW2 just like most of the Living Story content so I won't be surprised if they'll be released ASAP. Maybe they'll get around to finishing the features they promised at launch one day.

if they would add mounts to WvW they should disable porting in return.

Why do people never read the articles they post replies to?  He specifically says cosmetic mounts, not increases to speed.

That being said, I disagree with it.  Put in flying mounts and make them 300% player speed!  :P

Anet seems to kill immersion all the time, although ironically, their environment is amazingly immersive.  They ruin it by introducing silly things, such as: charr/quaggan plush backpacks & hats, sunglasses & glasses, baseball caps, SAB weapons & items, and now bobble-heads.  Don't get me wrong, i'm not against fun/silly items, but the level of absurdity of these things, is too extreme, and overall, it just ruins immersion, and doesn't belong in a fantasy world.

Why bring up immersion?  Because all those items i listed, already ruin it, and waypoints destroy immersion everytime anyway, and mounts would actually enhance it.  They could've found a nice balance and integrated both.  They could reduce the amount of waypoints, since there's so many anyway, and mounts could be used in cities/hubs.

As always though, someone will raise their opinion against mounts, declaring that "waypoints are already here, so there's no need!", and yet, that argument fails everytime, when the positive arguments of immersion, convenience, and traveling are brought up to counter it.

Furthermore, traveling in GW2 basically comes down to switching out talents & signets, for swfitness boons.  It's really ridiculous seeing champ trains blazing from champ-to-champ with 50+ people all having swiftness boons.

Nope ... this topic has been discussed for the last 3 years and there are good reasons why not to.
