[Column] General: The Top 5 MMOs That Could Be Singleplayer Games

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

This is such a strange topic to write about, but also one that feels oddly appropriate. So many MMOs nowadays have evolved into an amalgamation of game modes and content – some stuff you can play alone, some of it requires strangers, some of it is best with friends, some is friendly, some is just for fun. Even though these experiences seem to be getting farther and farther away from what made the genre so exciting to begin with – adventuring in epic online worlds – it has led to creation of a term with both good and bad connotations: solo friendly.

I would LOVE to see a Warcraft single player RPG. Something along the lines of God of War, can you imagine?! With Thrall as the hero... omg.... *drools*

I honestly think FFXIV should be on the list as it does feel you are playing  a single player game from the get go

You missed the biggest one - Elder Scrolls Online.

yea, wow being a single player game... riiiiiight.

seriously, wow is not a single player game, you couldnt do most instances (on propper lvl as leveling process) or raids to get the armors - which are the high lvl rewards, and actually the only.

so, the point of this "news" was to tell us which games YOU LIKE TO SEE as single player games? right?

#1 should be Elder Scrolls Online. It should be on the list, GW2 has more group play than ESO, even WoW has more group play then ESO. (especially considering you can finish the story without going into a LFR). not to mention all the levels below max.

    Edit**

I get it now, games that could be,   ALL the current MMO's could be single player but whats the point.  You can play all of them alone now if you want too, only running into people when your outside questing.       Must avoid fluff content before coffee is working.

GW2 could be a decent co-op game or two player but many features would be worthless without a large group of human players. a tiny morsel of any MMO couldwork as singleplayer.

only game i can see being a singleplayer and would problably be a great option if it ever had to get shut down would be swtor.
  • SomeOldBlokeSomeOldBloke Member UncommonPosts: 2,167
Most of the MMOs launched in the last 5 years should be on the list... but then it would be a damn big list

Wow could serve as number one on any list. It's the one and only game that carries this genre on it's back.
  • Dreamo84Dreamo84 Member UncommonPosts: 3,713
Yes that's exactly what this article was Thane. Lol you should have actually read it. He was talking about making a single player Warcraft game. Not suggesting WoW is a single player game.

surprised Elder Scrolls Online isn't on that list as I've been playing it completely solo for the most part. with the exception of taking down a world even/boss with whoever happens to be around.

the secret world not being at least in the top 3 if not nr 1 makes this list complelty ridicoulos...

I really miss the secret world in this list, I mean - It would be an awesome adventure game if it wasn't an MMO(Gosh, I would still pay the same price for it :D ).

Was about to bring that one up as well. Not to mention, most recently released MMOs tend to be more single-player than multi-player :(

Blizzard was working on one several years ago, it made a showing at one of the trade shows, I think it was CES back in those days, though possibly a very early E3.  It then disappeared and didn't show up the following year.  The year after we were introduced to the first tidbits of info about World of Warcraft.

imagine the secret world as a fallout/tes like open world rpg experience...that would be damn awesome...

SWTOR is a subpar MMO, but if it was made to be more of a singleplayer game it probably would have been great. I do love Star Wars but I'm not really a big fan of singleplayer games. I think SWTOR should have been #1 on the list.
  • LukavkLukavk Member UncommonPosts: 8
Horrible list. That's all that needs to be said.

I would have to disagree with WoW being a single player game. For the main reason of the definition of  MMO witch stands for massive multiplayer online. Yes I do agree that there is aspects of solo play in WoW like battle pets and crafting along with the recent expansion with Mists that expands more so on crafting particularly cooking with farming and the up coming xpac that will offer housing by all means yes it has its solo play but WoW very mechanics were built on it being a MMO and you can never take that away for you will be taking away its very core its foundation. Just because you have LFR etc..

These are just tools and are not in any way solo play and never will be. The BG system is self defies the term solo play. To these points I would have to again say that no WoW will never be a solo play game.

I think its funny that ppl list ESO and Final Fantasy....I wonder how they missed the single player RPG's that belong to the franchises.

No, the point was to show the games that practically are single player games and the #1 being WoW is spot on.  The feature doesn't focus on endgame or content specifically put into the game to encourage multiplayer.

Consider it a list of games that if they were Single Player games in the first place they would look very similar to what they are now.  In the case of WoW, I virtually did play 1-90 solo.  I did do a few dungeons but I didn't need to.

    This list just seems skewed.

Top 5 MMOs that could be single player games?

#1 SWTOR - Who are you kidding... this game was made to be a single player game with friends!  8 classes and 8 different storylines all voice acted by professionals.

#2 ESO- Why? Because again, it IS a single player game with friends.  The lore, the quests.. just makes it a no brainer.

#3 The Secret War- Kick ass story driven content.

#4 EVE Online - Umm hello space sim game against NPC baddies and you can mine and craft!

#5 Age of Conan- Boobs, Decapitation and all 'round blood bath makes this a great potential single player game.

Once again, the lists just seem off here on MMORPG.  I really like this site too.  Please straighten out a bit.

Eve would not work as a single player without Massive changes. Everything you buy on the market people had to mine the ore for, research the blueprints and manufacture.. not to mention moon mining, exploration, running FW for anything faction, or dealing with pirate agents for their ships/goods, hitting 0.0 rats for months.. in each of the factions space for specific drops, scannin plexes and white holes. It would take 6 months just to fit a freakin frig in propper t2 mods if there werent 30k ppl doing all the different tasks at once and putting the mods on the market. There's also be no market to sell goods, so all of those tasks would just.. suck.  Eve's player driven Economy is what makes the game. Without massive players, there is no Eve. & this is from someone who's flown almost exclusivly solo since '05

The Secret World really needs to be on this list. It's the best single-player MMO I've ever played.
