This is such a strange topic to write about, but also one that feels oddly appropriate. So many MMOs nowadays have evolved into an amalgamation of game modes and content – some stuff you can play alone, some of it requires strangers, some of it is best with friends, some is friendly, some is just for fun. Even though these experiences seem to be getting farther and farther away from what made the genre so exciting to begin with – adventuring in epic online worlds – it has led to creation of a term with both good and bad connotations: solo friendly.

yea, wow being a single player game... riiiiiight.
seriously, wow is not a single player game, you couldnt do most instances (on propper lvl as leveling process) or raids to get the armors - which are the high lvl rewards, and actually the only.
so, the point of this "news" was to tell us which games YOU LIKE TO SEE as single player games? right?
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
#1 should be Elder Scrolls Online. It should be on the list, GW2 has more group play than ESO, even WoW has more group play then ESO. (especially considering you can finish the story without going into a LFR). not to mention all the levels below max.
Edit**
I get it now, games that could be, ALL the current MMO's could be single player but whats the point. You can play all of them alone now if you want too, only running into people when your outside questing. Must avoid fluff content before coffee is working.

- TOR
- FF14
- GW2
- WOW
Was about to bring that one up as well. Not to mention, most recently released MMOs tend to be more single-player than multi-player
Blizzard was working on one several years ago, it made a showing at one of the trade shows, I think it was CES back in those days, though possibly a very early E3. It then disappeared and didn't show up the following year. The year after we were introduced to the first tidbits of info about World of Warcraft.

imagine the secret world as a fallout/tes like open world rpg experience...that would be damn awesome...
I would have to disagree with WoW being a single player game. For the main reason of the definition of MMO witch stands for massive multiplayer online. Yes I do agree that there is aspects of solo play in WoW like battle pets and crafting along with the recent expansion with Mists that expands more so on crafting particularly cooking with farming and the up coming xpac that will offer housing by all means yes it has its solo play but WoW very mechanics were built on it being a MMO and you can never take that away for you will be taking away its very core its foundation. Just because you have LFR etc..
These are just tools and are not in any way solo play and never will be. The BG system is self defies the term solo play. To these points I would have to again say that no WoW will never be a solo play game.
No, the point was to show the games that practically are single player games and the #1 being WoW is spot on. The feature doesn't focus on endgame or content specifically put into the game to encourage multiplayer.
Consider it a list of games that if they were Single Player games in the first place they would look very similar to what they are now. In the case of WoW, I virtually did play 1-90 solo. I did do a few dungeons but I didn't need to.
This list just seems skewed.
Top 5 MMOs that could be single player games?
#1 SWTOR - Who are you kidding... this game was made to be a single player game with friends! 8 classes and 8 different storylines all voice acted by professionals.
#2 ESO- Why? Because again, it IS a single player game with friends. The lore, the quests.. just makes it a no brainer.
#3 The Secret War- Kick ass story driven content.
#4 EVE Online - Umm hello space sim game against NPC baddies and you can mine and craft!
#5 Age of Conan- Boobs, Decapitation and all 'round blood bath makes this a great potential single player game.
Once again, the lists just seem off here on MMORPG. I really like this site too. Please straighten out a bit.
The Secret World really needs to be on this list. It's the best single-player MMO I've ever played.
