Fun keeps me playing. When i stop having fun i quit. If the community is nice that helps but the community in most of these games today are filled with spoiled brats that want everything handed to them so they can rush to end game.

    +1 for this.

Different games can be fun in different ways, so it might be story in one game but community in another.

Forum Post count does not = Game Intelligence or Knowledge  it just shows how often people like to talk.

Character development (skills and customization) and PvP are at the top of my list.

    - Character progression i have to work for

    - Huge world to explore

    - Team work and my role in it

    - Endless amount of content (except for 5% or so of player base)

-Sense that my character is unique in terms of stats and abilities. I hate being forced into a cookie-cutter build and having very little flexibility about what abilities and stats  my character has.

-Ability to keep improving my character (not just my character's gear).

    -Complex economy and crafting

    -Meaningful PvP

    -A good community always helps.

    - I tend to stick with sub games longer because, well I'm paying to play it so I don't want to waste my money. It's too easy to drop a F2P game when something newer and shinier comes along.

I wanted to single this one out, as I agree and knew it would be posted. "Fun!"

While not a very informative answer, it is malleable and can mean that different features/"things" can be fun, according to each player and game :)

I think that, for me, fun combat, intriguing story, great quests, interesting crafting, well implemented housing, and all are good features, there comes a time in every MMO where if I have not made connections with other players, I will leave when those "fun things" become boring.

Right now, I am enjoying Wizard101 again. The first time I played, I made a handful of great friends that kept me playing long after I would have stopped (about 2 years). With my 2nd go-round, I have not connected yet with anyone (old friends have moved on) and wonder how long the combat (Which I like) and the quests (which I foresee getting tedious) will hold me. $9.95 monthly fee is not much at all.

When the game stops being "as fun", I find that the other players I meet may keep me logging in. That's just me, though :)

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse.

For me it's Freedom and non combat activities, mostly housing and exploring, I can't stick to a mmorpg If I dont have all that 3.

Creating a character that fits my playstyle. This never really happens, but I've found it on a few MMOS. Right now running with a sorcerer tank on ESO.

Also being in a world that promotes immersiveness.

Then thirdly it would be balancing the immersiveness with practicality.

    Building, exploring and community.

I'll play a game for years after I've completed all the content just to hang with friends. Conversely, the loss of friends to game with can catalyze dropping a game regardless of other enjoyable activities.

Freedom to do lots of different things to progress is good in MMO's, setting my own goals and challenges. Even if I don't complete them the fun is in the trying.

I've always enjoyed gathering and crafting (guess that makes games like Runescape special), not all combat makes a good MMO for me. Fun is based on factors like difficulty, risk vs reward, and the community.

I used to have a lot of fun helping others in the past, the community can sometimes influence us and get us involved doing things together, or helping each other with quests. That isn't the case any more as most MMO's have been dumbed down allowing almost everyone to solo the content that used to get people to work together.

New content is also necessary for games as they evolve with time, otherwise like so many have said, the game is just a theme park and once you've been on all the rides its time to move on.

I really dislike the direction most MMORPGs games are going with such fast paced button mashing, they are all too similar.

Min maxing in my own weird way.

Trying out as many combinations of classes, builds, skills, powers and gear as I can.  I try to come up with something original (I don't follow guides or FOTM builds) that is still viable and works with my strange play style.

Extra points if the result makes me laugh.

I know what you mean. I spent the first 2 years in EQ just trying different characters of all races and classes and starting areas. The last year, I finally found some friends and created a guild that upped my enjoyment and kept me on that last year.

    +1 for this, totally agree.

My "fun" came along when me and my friends switch over to play Wildstar from a previous MMO. More than the game, it's the time me and my friends spend together that makes the experience worth it. It does help that the game is awesome too. :D
