  • I love SWTOR's stylised realism but dislike the more cartoony Borderlands look.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

If I absolutely had to pick one, I suppose I'd go with stylized realism as it was done in the game Dishonored. Real enough for the world to come across as fairly grim and gritty, yet somewhat exaggerated character proportions (especially in faces) and good use of contrasting color to prevent the world from feeling too oppressive.

agree here, it just has to fit first into the persona of the game. I love the direction Wildstar went with the game and my interest has been piqued by Firefall as well, totally gonna look into it.

Will say the same thing I said in the last thread: It's 2014, there is no reason to cripple your game with a subpar cartoony engine anymore. Stylized and Stylized Realism are much better quality, age better, and attract a more mature audience.

    Currently Playing: ESO and FFXIV
    Have played: You name it
If you mention rose tinted glasses, you better be referring to Mitch Hedberg.

Stylized realism (to me personally) is something like ESO and TSW. They try to be realistic visually, but you can still see their unique art style that keeps them from looking realistic.

You know, yesterday while playing ESO some guys talked in zone chat about developers vision in mmos and how hardware hasnt reached that point yet. I said the developers vision for mmos is way behind hardware advancement, and what was their answer? they made the excuse that not many people have expensive PCs to handle the "developers vision"...

    1) Why bother trying to make realistic games that only run properly on high end PCs?

    or

    2) Why bother worrying about people who dont have high end PCs?

Two questions going in opposite directions there. Where is the developer vision? I personally believe their vision is in the wallet, not the looks of their games. Otherwise only Question #2 would be valid.

A good point and one well worth considering. I think you are right, the reason why we still see graphics engines that are dated are almost exclusively because it would be playable by a wider audience.

    Realistic graphics.

Btw stylized cartoon is just cartoon for people whom don't want to admit they play a cartoon.

  • EQAbnerEQAbner Member CommonPosts: 25

I'm not voting because I don't care what the graphics look like really. Well... if we were talking original Nintendo style I might have an issue but style-wise I don't care.

It's the gameplay that I care about.

So to directly answer the question, I enjoy them all. I have no preference.

How would you have all of the above in one game, that would be impossible, if you mean you enjoy all styles in different games, well yeah, me too, who wants limits? But if I ask you what your favorite color is your not gonna tell me you chose the rainbow as a color, cause its not one color, its all colors. Anyways, ahah im gonna give some examples.

Realistic games would be, DAYZ, COD, BF, ESO and the likes.

Stylized realism would be games like "the walking dead", "Borderlands" and games like that.

Stylized cartoon would be games like Team Fortress, WoW, Wildstar, and Pixar looking stuff.

Cartoon would be games like Naruto NinjaStorm, Zelda & most Nintendo produced games.

swtor for example would be a game walking the line between stylized realism and stylized cartoon.

Given these criteria, I'm in the Stylized Realism camp.  It really depends on the game, but looking at the art in The Walking Dead and A Wolf Among Us, I can say I really like it and would love for it to show up in other games.

I think it's the difference between a lot of Comic Book art, and Cartoon art.  I prefer the Comic Book art to the Cartoon art, even though they can both be heavily stylized.

I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.

I'm probably between realism, and stylized realism in both graphics and gameplay, strictly speaking about MMO's, anyway.  I love many forms of anime, particularly in the Cowboy Bebop vein, but with games, Street Fighter 2 is about as far as I like to go with that.  The whole "sword bigger than your body" thing just throws me right out of the immersion pool almost faster than pokemon-like monsters ala Aion.  It's one of the biggest reasons I'm passing on Archeage.

  • EdliEdli Member Posts: 941

I couldn't stand how swtor looked. Here you had two guys talking to each other about something big, great voice acting and they look like freaking potatoes with moustaches. I couldn't take seriously something that looks like a cartoon. This was the company that made mass effect, there was nothing wrong with that art style. Why in the hell did you think this was better?

I think its great that there's finally a thread about graphics that has at least sparked SOME debate. Every other thread is "omg it's so subjective I don't have an opinion because art is so subjective."

    Pfft...

Edited: Because previous poll was yours not mine

Immersive realism if the right ENB preset in Skyrim thats what i like.

Also how The Witcher 3 looks like just awesome.

    Hate cartoonish worlds

Good graphics for me is nothing what those poll selections offer.I want graphics no matter high end or low end to have good definition in the textures. Then i prefer to see "sections" in the model and not just one mesh with several cheap looking textures painted onto it.An example would be say a Goblin roaming the land with a backpack on his back that moves on it's own, perhaps shoulder pads that also flap as he moves, detail like that.

I want detail everywhere in my game, that is how i know a developer cared to put the effort into their game.

Another area is buildings,i really hate any developer that makes 2D buildings with no insides, that is a VERY slack effort and tells me the rest of the game will have the same slack effort.

It is that detail that tells me if a game has some heart and soul put into it or is a game that looks like it rolled off an assembly line.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

So, you are saying that you want it to be well done for what it is, regardless of the style?

    As in;

    - If pixel art - Made under real pixel art size, color, and number of pixel restraints.

    - If vector drawn - clean vectors that have no ugly seams.

If so...Then that is an opinion I can get on board with. A fair bit improved over the "graphics doesn't matter as long as play is good" argument that others have presented, I think. Because, I think graphics do matter. they can detract from or enrich play (you can't as easily understand how to use an item if you can't figure out what it is supposed to be, because the font is to crazy looking and small, and the appearance of it doesn't tell you anything).  But, that they should be measured by the standards of the style. As apposed to being compared to other styles.

Realistic without taking itself too seriously is good for me. Firefall, GW, those're good. I especially like sci-fi games, but that's just me. I dunno why futuristic, alien, or post-apoc locales sing more to me than magical forests and wizard pewpew.
  • bastibastimaubastibastimau Member Posts: 16
I usually go for genres rather than styles, so sci fi is what does it for me mostly. Whether it be something like Wildstar or Firefall or something like Mass Effect, I'd play and enjoy it if it had laser pew pew.

Stylized realism but I am also ood with stylized cartoon.
  • GoutSmasherLivesGoutSmasherLives Member Posts: 13

Yeah, I go with the "I don't care" option. Any style, as long as the animation and framerate is smooth, is fine by me.

There are games out there that are too shiny and too detailed but it affects loading and running times, and are just so unnecessary.

  • AvanahAvanah Member RarePosts: 1,627

    I chose neither.

Reason being, If a game is good it does not matter what type of graphics it has.

    Simple.

"My Fantasy is having two men at once...

    One Cooking and One Cleaning!"

    ---------------------------

"A good man can make you feel sexy,

strong and able to take on the whole world...

    oh sorry...that's wine...wine does that..."
