It all boils to a few things: 1) Bang for my buck. When I started playing MMORPGs, I paid $30 a pop and played for multiple years. Now, MMOs cost $60 (or nothing) and last... 1 month, 6 weeks tops if I'm lucky.
2) Familiarity. I enjoy getting comfortable with a game. Where others say, "b-o-r-i-n-g!", I say, "comfy." Like an old pair of sneakers or jeans, one's favorite chair, a significant other. Comfy is good, to me.
3) People. While not every player stuck around for years, a good core of players did. They took breaks every now and again, certainly, but usually ended up coming back. It made it so that names became familiar. Attitudes and playstyles became familiar. Friendships and squabbles found fertile ground to take root. Now, it is like getting new neighbors every month or two. No connections made, good or bad. Why bother? You, or they, will be gone in a very short while.
Yes, I do miss having 1 MMORPG where I can not wait to log-in again, or do not want to log-off once I am playing, where I feel "comfy" with the mechanics, the people, and the world.

Personally the only modern MMORPG trend that annoys me is the idea that MMOs need to be designed in a way to attract people who don't actually like MMOs. Which to me makes about as much sense as someone trying to figure out a way to get vegetarians to eat at their steakhouse. - FARGIN_WAR
I see a re-occuring thread in many replies. There just isn't a community.
I deplore games that are "classless" because that lessens the inter-dependance of players on one another. How can you build relationships and community if the entire game can be done solo? You've no need of anyone else.
So what happens is you see everyone running around questing or crafting, no one has the time or desire to meet and greet.
I think the games we miss the most are the ones where we've made good friends, had good times, great memories and funny stories.

I left Wow because they changed the game to be more lobby based while dumbing down the game way to much for my taste. I think its safe to say I miss the old days of MMO's. So to answer your question yes.

When most MMOs that have come out in the last many years have played so much like that one game you played to death for many years, it's no wonder you can't play them for long without getting bored.
Except that the new ones are a lot crappier versions compared to the originals.
UO, EQ1, DAoC, AC, SWG - all generation 1 games - and IMO - all of them are still some of the best MMORPGs I've ever played.
Wildstar - compare to EQ1 - absolute crap (my opinion). Anyone who has watched Idiocracy - Wildstar is an "idiocracied" version of EQ1 - it's loud, has lots of bright flashing colors, has language that matches (I am surprised that they didn't use the word "Scro" in wildstar).
ESO - compare to DAoC - absolute crap (my opinion) - a MMO so heavily phased where you can't interact with your own group members.
AC - nothing to campare it to
SWG - nothing to compare it to (please don't even THINK H1Z1 - what an insult)
The new games are watered down pale shadows of their predecessors.
You should add AA too to that list.
And to OP nope, i don't miss playing one MMO for years. It is like having just pizza for snacks for years. I like variety.

I find no variety anymore that is my problem they all seem the same with different skins. I'm not counting indie games where you could find a bit more variety though you get poor quality for the most part.
Think about the games we did play for a long time. Honestly UO, AC, EVE, WOW, EQ, maybe Linage.
Their are other formulas that worked however each formula has a player cap in my view. To be blunt since developers abandoned the sandbox market post Ren UO its been a never ending decade long WOW clone carebear nation. These games are gear driven have no player housing, more and more simplistic combat and lack almost any real aspect of what you consider character creation anymore. Even the dungeons are just instance farms to get away from the actual player.
Every time a new game comes out the WOW clone locusts pop up and tell everyone to get out this is their game, "its our time now". As if it hasnt been for ten years now. Of course the game dies because after they farm the raid gear they trash it and run back to WOW and their is really nothing else to do since the themepark elements are so simplistic and linear all you end up doing is going AFK.
When I look at EQ NEXT what is it, its a themepark with Legos. Great. The "character creation" is essentially a pick your hero and select hair color more like a MOBA. Combat is simplistic action combat button spamming. And like any good Themepark the other elements will quickly get abandoned in favor of a constant stream of updated raid content. After they kick the baited non PVE crowd to the curb similar to what GW2 did. At this point all these new games are is false advertisements for almost WOW clones, with DAOC zergs, meaningless pvp, nonexistent sandbox elements.
I have hopes for a few games but not holding my breath. But I am not about to farm dailies again.
Originally posted by Utinni A lot of people still play the same MMO for years straight. I think the people that don't are the people who entered the genre when all of the solo games came in to play, meaning you didn't really enjoy MMOrpg's in the first place.
Except there are lots of us who were around in the early days and really didn't care for the old games. Newer games are infinitely better. I'd never go back to EQ or UO, especially if they were exactly like they used to be. They used to suck.
Todays mmos simply dont have the depth and sense of adventure, wonder that past MMO's have.
Everquest I played religiously for almost 5 years. It had me hooked,I simply didnt want anything else.Or I would just simply have 2 MMO's going at once.Say,EQ and AC or DAOC.
YOU CHOSE your adventure in those games, they didnt choose for you.

You can still choose your adventure in current games. You don't have to take the fast track to leveling if you don't want to. Just takes a little imagination and the willingness to find your own fun.
I do, i miss the days where i can just stick with one good MMO game. DAOC is the longest MMO game i have ever played going from it`s release to 2012. I only stopped becouse i can`t play PC games anymore sadly becouse of my wrist.

What you describe is not the same at all. From what I remember of EQ, there wasn't a true fast track as most MMOs have today. You had to be power leveled in EQ to really be fast tracked. In EQ it took me months to get to max level and I had good friends that would come power level me all the time. How many MMOs have been released since WoW came along and made the genre all about easy mode to max level and then raid for gear that can truly say it takes the vast majority of the players 6 months or more to hit max level?
Better yet, how many MMOs since WoW can say they take months to reach max level and have depth, a sense of adventure and wonder that keep the players coming back day after day just because they might discover something new and exciting? Don't answer that because the easy mode MMO model started by WoW destroyed it. Yes WoW fanbois, WoW did because it was designed to be an easy as hell dumbed down clone of EQ. Now every company out there follows the dumbed down easy as hell design trying to get a slice of that money.

Yeah , you can , but alone .
And even if you manage to find player who have same idea with you , then there come the difference between level , items make it impossible to have a journey with other .
Basically , you alone in massive multiplayer O RPG
The difference are , in old game , you search for the journey , other too .
And because the game design make players can overlook the difference and join the journey with other.
Nowadays themepark design ? you are alone
And you know ? lone journey are suck ,
try to walk in long road alone and walk it with your friend to see what difference .

Hmm.
The longest i played a single mmorpg would have to be 6 months, That's not to say i didn't play for many years in those chunks.
Lately, I find i spend less and less time "commited" to mmorpgs, It takes about 1 month and i've grown bored. Maybe that's an age thing? maybe the change in design is the problem.
I actually don't know if i want an mmorpg for "years" now, It's fun to say "Hey i might play x game today". Then again its great to be immersed in a game, I miss that.

and now there's so many shiny new titles coming from every corner of the world it's hard to focus on just the 1
No thats not true.
i would still be content with playing 1 title. It's just that everything released is utter bullshit and not intresting to play for very long.
i would love to have a game wich would take me a year to get to cap for instance.
This nails it for me.
That being said, i am still playing Everquest 1 today. Simply because nothing better has been released since it came out.
MMOs finally replaced social interaction, forced grouping and standing in a line while talking to eachother.
Now we have forced soloing, forced questing and everyone is the hero, without ever having to talk to anyone else. The evolution of multiplayer is here! We won,... right?
Well the first MMO I played was Ultima in 98 when I was 11 and played it 3 years straight.
Moved On and played Runescape from 2003-2008 (still played on and off until 2010)
So yes those were my main MMO's I was invested in.
Today I just bounce around looking for a new MMO and sadly and not finding it. As to your question yes not having a main MMO and therefore not getting involved in the community does take some of the magic away for me anyways
People talk WoW this and WoW that, but it never caught on with me. CoH is where i made my bed at since at that point i was lookin for something other then the "Magic,Orc,Elves" MMo. Day one CoH for me, i knew i'd be draining money into this game till it either shut down or i lost a job. The whole concept with the power and costume system is what got me at the jump considering i have a rather vivid imagination and freakin loved super heroes. Even thou basically what yal call "endgame" wasn't really put to the forefront till years later, it meat little to me cause i was always all over the place with new ideas and adding powers and costumes all the time didn't help curb that either.
Another aspect where heroes felt superior at was a combination both our community and class system. You'd be hard pressed to find another mmo where at any random point of you startin out, some high lvl comes runnin up in trade and drops a few mill$$$ on you just because. And because the way our system was built, CoH completely negated the "Holy Trinity". The power system cast Tanks,DPS,Support, etc in such a diverse rainbow that while some were preferred, none were rejected and with a good team build may not have even been needed.
Not needing a Tank or Healer....let that sink in for a min.
Only mmo aside from Tabula Rasa, Auto Assault, and FFXVI where im deep into the story aspect and not just click thru to get thru. Goin thru things i wanted to know who did this, what the hell was that, why did that look like that, wait wasn't he dead????wtf?!?! Hopefully with the things in motion now, i wont have to wait for much longer to feel all that again.

Most MMO's I've played were Korean/Asian MMO's back when I was assigned in SEA.
Right now, I'm spending enjoyable hours on WildStar, which has a pretty high rating here in MMO-RPG.
Do check it out

WoW - 2 years
LOTRO - 4 years (favorite of all time)
Archeage - TBD
I miss enjoying a game and the community enough to play for a long time. LOTRO when I first started was a magical feeling and I miss that.
