I agree with everything except world-PvP - unless you had world-PvE channels. Game with one server but many channels; easy, quick, non-restricted switching.
There is a mis-understanding among some people that "sandbox" = "FFA PvP". The 2 simply have nothing to do with one another. You can have a "sandbox" that has no combat what-so-ever, I believe A Tale in the Desert II is an example of that, though I have never played it. You can have a sandbox with only PvE. You can have a sandbox with only faction based PvP... I think The Repopulation is sorta aiming in that direction. Conversely you can also have a FFA PvP game that is not a "sandbox".
Some people think that "sandbox" means zero rules, but that's not true even of real-life sandbox's.... we can't build something in one that defies the laws of physics... and all of them have a "box" that contains the playspace. Most also have rules about how kids interact with each other in them.
"Sandbox" means that the players have AGENCY, some ability to creatively effect thier environment. It doesn't mean that there are zero limitations on the form that takes. If we had a "WWII" style sandbox, for example, it wouldn't make sense to allow the players to form thier own factions and wage war against both Axis and Allies...nor for individuals to go "rogue" on a regular basis. Such things wouldn't logicaly be expected in such an environment because groups or individuals who did that wouldn't logicaly be expected to last very long.....and why build in functionality that should logicaly result in the player being permanently removed from the game?
That doesn't mean that players wouldn't be able to build or permanently destroy bridges or fortifications on the landscape... to fight across an open map, to come up with some sort of command structure, set thier own objectives for battles... even excersize some control over research of new equipment, etc. There are ALOT of things you can allow the players to have power to change and effect while still excersizing alot of control.
Let me build the castles, roads, whatever. Minecraft does this and it sold 10 million copies in North America alone.
and Minecraft did it with basically a small team and by any standards unacceptable graphics.
This should be a HUGE signal to the larger firms but from looking at the latest it appears the large firms think the reason its doing so well is because of its block style 8 bit graphics...
Please do not respond to me, even if I ask you a question, its rhetorical.
EVe is the perfect sandbox IMO, just wish it wasn't just about spaceships but with actual people. But everything else I like except for wardecs and PoS getting destroyed. Honestly I would love it if they combine UO and EvE together. Take EvE economy and skill generation with UOs environment (but 3D).

Yep. And that 8 bit graphics were made because most common people can't afford gaming PC's then we turn our heads toward consoles which disappoint because they aren't much better. The mmo's we play are not going to advance until the equipment we run them on does - and can be bought cheap at the grocery store by everyone's mom and dad.

Second Life did it long, long before Minecraft was ever conceived, and with far better graphics.
While not my cup 'o tea, Second Life remains, IMHO, one of the first and, to this day, one of extremely few true MMO sandboxes around, yet rarely, if ever, gets mentioned in discussions like this.

Yeah it is a shame that Eve is just so boring from a basic gameplay standpoint because the underlying systems are fantastic.

Ryzom, a good sanbox game, has 3 ways to PvP:
- players can flag themselves for open world PvP
- zones which contain the best mats for crafting are open Guild-vs-Guild PvP zones
- Guilds can control Outposts, and other Guilds can schedule PvP wars to gain control of them.
The one pleasure many seem to get, attacking players who don't want to PvP, is missing.

Yes, have pvp in instances, and have many game modes.

What do I want in a sandbox?
Sand!

Yes, at the very least it should contain sand, provide you with a shovel and a pail. Water would be required as a binding agent.

Perplexing, frankly.
It sound better with RTS game like warcraft 3 than RPG.
Anyway , i believe OP forget to tell us what goal of this game .
Every game , long or short playtime must have a goal to compete .
Yeah that is an amazing game, and custom servers make it even more so.
