I was hopeful that I would like this game, since talk has been that this one has been designed for a Western audience. [mod edit]
I hate how everyone looks the same. Approximate same height, same weight, same age. You talk to an NPC and you get the same basic face staring back up at you that you see in every other single Korean game. I hate seeing the same generic hairstyles that are in every other single Korean game. I hate seeing everyone's mounts running around next to them, like a bunch of over-sized vanity pets.
I hate the lore. I hate the ultra-generic fantasy world. I hate the uninspired races. Somehow, the elves feel even more generic than Tolkien. The humans feel more generic than Briton. I hate the voice actor for the cut-scenes. The graphics are generic, tasteless and bland. The environments are generic. The world is generic. The enemies are generic and boring.
I hate opening up my inventory and being assaulted by tokens, motes, blue salt wedges, potions, crafting materials and inks. I hate mousing over a level 5 bow and seeing things like "Regrade OK!". I hate opening up the Marketplace and seeing even more potions, motes, deeds, tax certificates, blank frames that leave no doubt that the game was designed from the ground up to nickel and dime the dedicated player to death. I hate rolling for coinpurses. I hate having to use labor to open coinpurses. I hate the generic housing. I hate seeing the slums of cookie cutter houses blighting the countryside.
I hate standing around waiting for spawns. I hate spawn stealing. I hate waiting around for chests. I hate line cutters. I hate the generic leveling. I hate the generic quests. The generic combat is boring, and the combat feedback lacks weight.
I guess I'm just not starved enough for that sandbox experience to overlook everything else that is so unpalatable and generic about this game.
And obviously, I don't hate the game; as if this was the title I had placed the lofty expectations of my MMORPG hopes on. (I don't have anymore hope for the MMORPG genre.) I'm just surprised that the only missing ingredient out of the equation of (Very) Generic Game + (Very) Korean Aesthetics/Design is the ability to build your own stuff and zerg.
Comments
Hate is a strong word, but I avoid them for much the same reasons.
Sure, I wanted to try the next "great" sandbox experience just like everybody else. If it was only the graphics that were an issue, I'd be logged in and playing it.
Succinct and accurate.
Everyone improves a game. Some when they log in, others when they leave. You defiantly fall into the latter.
Well, you literally can't get into AA today, so...
Yeah i see the same thing. And its kind of telling about the whole genre that this game is the next big thing. The genre is just running out of steam. If you look at all the up coming games it is really sad.
Same here.
I very much dislike some of the aesthetic choices they made but I haven't felt this way since Lineage 2.
Which was a good thing.

Well, for some reason do most Korean games have a far more limited look and wardrobe than most Western games.
There are of course exceptions, Aions character creator is really top notch but I think most Korean games look far too much on Lineage, where at least when I played it in 2001 everyone of the same class and sex were identical.
In the west devs are more inspired of EQ and Wow which had plenty more choices.
It doesn't make the games less fun too play but it do lessen the feeling of a living world.
I guess Western and Japanese games put their money elsewhere than Korean and Chinese, art is pretty expensive after all and having a lot of it will be very costly.
Insipid means bland and uninspired. I do hold lack of creativity and innovation with a certain amount of contempt, yes, especially in regards to creative efforts- like designing video games. I suppose vocabulary probably isn't your strong suit since the word you were looking for is "definitely".
+1 for grammar cop on a forum, and another for judging an entire culture "insipid" because you don't like it's video games. You're making yourself out to be a wonderful person, what loss this game has suffered by you not playing.
This is an interesting post. I find it interesting that you would use "when MMOs used to be good" and "early days of Lineage 2" together. Most people think that old MMOs were better (for various reasons), but most wouldn't use Lineage 2 as an example. I think it highlights a certain aspect of the genre that after you play for the first time, you spend the rest of your time trying to recapture the same magic.
I just am flabbergasted by the fact that whoever designed ArcheAge recognized the direction that the genre needed to go, but wasn't able to do more with it than marry sandbox elements on top of a generic themepark. In Shadowbane, Irekei roleplayers were making their own language. In ArcheAge, elves live next to a lake and their god is dead. Really?
I think your disgust for these "Korean faces" is just what people call - racism. I understand why a lot of people don't like Asian games. They are just culturally intolerant and some of them are racists.
What Idon't get is how you can say this one is bland? I mean have you seen the Western crap lately? It's all a generic pile of crap. Unisnpired and bland.
Western MMO games = bland and crap. I actually find Asian games to have more interesting mechanics. If you can get used to their visual "style", some of their games are quite cool. E.g. Final Fantasy XIV.
Mission in life: Vanquish all MMORPG.com trolls - especially TESO, WOW and GW2 trolls.
거북이는 목을 내밀 때 안 움직입니다
You might have a point if faces in Korean games looked anything like Koreans, lmao.
No it doesn't.
The early days of Lineage 2 were amazing. They added changes that completely evolved the game into something different.
So as a Lineage 2 player he (and also I) not only liked Lineage 2 but also look for many of Lineage 2's better game play elements in other games. Archeage just happens to have a bit of that.
Unfortunately for many you have to slog through until later in the leveling experience but it's there.
So recapturing those "times" is fairly easy. No trying necessary. All the game companies need to do is recognize a demographic of mmo players that enjoyed more of one thing and less of another.

What nonsense.
Lets ignore the fact that even if they hate Korean or Asian games in general they might be in love with their music, movies or food. To make sweeping generalisations on basis of video games is just asnine. AA does not represent Korean culture.
My apologies. Korea is at the forefront of electronic innovation and does have a very educated, hardworking and talented population. They are among our most important regional allies and share many of our most important values.
Good post. Thanks for sharing. I didn't have the time to play a grinder like Lineage 2 when it was released. It may or may not have been an actual "Korean grinder", but that's what people were calling it at the time; so I never was able to play it much. I tried to get into it at a later date, but was unsuccessful.
I have to agree on the education part, I lived there a year and the kids are always in school. South Korea is far from "insipid" and I would love to go back for a visit. It's a beautiful place with wonderful people. Don't listen to everyone.
Death is nothing to us, since when we are, Death has not come, and when death has come, we are not.
Oh, it's a real Korean grinder. And an "actual" korean grinder. Not like Aion, which other cried was a "korean grinder" not knowing what that actually meant.
but the idea of L2 was about player interaction. not quests and the "grind" was just to get you out in the world and expose you to the players.
Also to meter out, over a long period of time, the leveling process.
Now there are quests and the starting areas are sort of updated and abandoned.
