This is same thing that happen since every second generation mmos, once they became popular. It surprised me that people are even surprised about this anymore. Its normal, to be expected event.
Never will understand why poor service is expected as "normal". If you went to a restaunat on its opening night and the service was poor and the food was bad when they brought you the check would you think to yourself that this is the first night and I should expected everything about the experince to be poor. Just pay the bill, don't complain, just be happy to be here....this is all normal?

If that would be restaurant that would be not normal, but its not. Its bad comparsion.
Problem is with the fact that internet is like weather. It have moods, storms and can be unpredictable sometimes.
There are even sites that specialize in predicting internet weather for certain regions or programs that find best route for fastest connection to avoid the bad spots.
If you want to compare it to something try more like using drones on on mars with 15 min lag and subzero temperatures that give you 50/50% chance it will break down during the 18 day nigh cycle.
There are some things we will do even if we know that it will be a rough ride. Mmo launches are one of those things. People got used to it as there is little you can do about it even if you shower the servers with money, especially with ddos attack.
I you didint know A LOT western services where ddos during the last two week making a lot of sites and services unavailable for days or weeks now. So be happy they are getting it up quick and solving the issue.
