So for people thinking that land isn't an issue, check out this picture today. This was a party for a 16x16 plot that was being destroyed.
This by the way is just one side and was a few minutes after the house was placed. When I was trying to place it it was hard to get a good line of site on the plot with all the people gathered round.

This is from the land that opened up next to our guild plots today.
They (XLGames) are pushing people out of this game because of the land issue, the old fallback of just wait land will open up then you see when land does open up, 30 players gather around and spam it. No restrictions per account on Land Designs, 2 million players on 21 servers (most of which weren't even up at launch). Even with the head start I know of players in my guild that had 10 plots before the servers even went live. Also, NOT opening up the north even helped exacerbate the already big deal of a land issue.
Launch as far as the game goes was smooth, it was already a completed product stable and clean. The handling of the amount of servers screwed over a lot of people that have already walked away. While other players are just amassing huge amounts of land.
If there is no limits to land, there will be no real estate economy and a much less fun game (for me). The way it is in AA now much more resembles the real world with different classes of people etc.
I hate games where everyone can get everything instantly.
You can get land in AA on the most busy servers, you just don't get it on day 1.
They could have set an account limit of one property at launch and gradually raised it. They could have adopted a grid system where a few properties couldn't block lots of placements. People could then have amassed large holdings organically through play. And in such an environment they could have flipped a lot of ftp people to subscribe to participate in the land game. Instead they held a lottery based on crashes and queues and are permitting bots to autoclaim multiple properties.
This was a huge, huge mistake. They antagonized a large fraction of their most enthusiastic backers. They created bitter community dissention (because the people who profited from this system want to defend their advantage and will vigorously post to defend the indefensible.) They created awful word of mouth - this game has just about the worst user reviews for any MMO. And they did so for no larger design reason. Is there someone, somewhere who would design how the land situation played out in AA on purpose?
land is in demand, like it has to be - why that would be an issue is not clear to me.
Indeed; the rich do what they will, and the poor suffer what they must.
Fortunately, this is a game - and people don't have to play an unfair game. People like you should be jumping up and down to fix this - because otherwise you'll find no one around for you to lord over.
Edit: That was unfair and didn't come out the way I intended. It just feels better to win a competition when others have a chance is what I meant.
There is no freaking need for a real estate economy. Why? Because people who start late and will never get a fair shot at owning a land without actually resorting to buying it for shitloads of gold. And it's not like people sell 24x24 plots with built thatched farms on top so they can actually make the transaction in a secure way. Trion need to at least make it so that you can sell land without having the structure built cause that prevents people from trading in a secure way. Scamming should not be an intentional part of the game.
Anyway I completely disagree with your argument (even though it's made all the time by people playing the game, people who probably snatched 10 land spaces anyway). People who start the game now or in the future will not have access to land. This means that they will not be able to craft or farm. And once you take out the crafting and farming out of the equation, this game is probsbly the most boring MMO ever.
People who start now or in the future won't be able to amass that kind of gold to buy land as prices keep going up because of inflation. And since they can't properly craft and farm, it will be very difficult for them to make gold without having access to basic stuff like a 16x16 farm.
If I were to start now, I would subscribe and see that there is no land available and I am mostly limited to questing and mining like crazy an having a very small 8x8 farm which gets destroyed every week, I would just quit the game.
You can all have your 10 land spots and play your "estate economy" but that would alienate a lot of potential players.
All in real life real estate works in a very different manner to Archeage. In Archeage you just have land grab for people who were there first and who then scam other people.

Scamming has always been a part of sandboxy games. If you choose to use the unsecure way of trading it's your own fault. If the sellers won't use secure trading they have to keep paying tax for an unfinished property. It solved it self in the end.
Look to EVE.
I have 1 small plot (and just now, one 16x16) so you can quit your straw man arguments already.
16x16 farm is not basic, 8x8 is. I just had a run around the start zone Gweonid forest and I found at least 4 small plot spots and 1 16x16 large in about 10 minutes. The 16x16 I actually grabbed right now, so thank you for making me make the trip and see.
So you are saying no one claimed the lands when they came to the US, and there was no scamming among them?

In that case get used to people raging about this. There's no reason to purposely create an environment of have and have not in a game. If the alternative was possible in '03 it's possible now. There could be plenty of land for just about all if they designed it as such. There could still be things to fuel PVP over as well (something like faction bases in SWG being one example)...
They designed a system that will fuel jealousy which in turn causes the rage you see on forums. That's not even taking into account releasing enough servers to support the demand, another area that needs some serious attention apparently.
IMO there are some serious flaws with how they've approached this game.

Aloha Mr Hand !
Easy Solution -> Join a guild with a big farm, ask if you can use some place
2nd Solution -> Do some tradepacks and buy a 16x16 farm. This farm will offer enough place to soak all your Labour points even with the 1k pot a day.
There are certificates ensuring a save trade.
BUAHHAHAHAHAHAH 16 X 16 Land plots are going for 300-500 gold on my server , the avg tradepack run gives what? 4 gold max, forget about cross continent runs on my server as they are controlled by zerg guild and troll/gank guilds of your own faction. So that's about what 100 boring ass trade pack runson your donkey going from point a to point b not to mention the time it takes to grow the ats to make the said pack, That's hundres of hours of game time. Ugh yeah No thx. No wonder so many people are buying gold and chat has been taken over by gold farmers.
Strating to understand how this game works........
Aloha Mr Hand !
On what server are you finding land and where? On my server Tahyang there is NO land and when one does expire there are 50-100 people waiting.
I did create an account on Calleil and run around the safe zone land spots and didn't see any space on that server as well. That is the newest server so I thought it might have the best chance of having land.
On my server there were a few spots for 28x28 and above in windscour....
Now I am checking he east since thats what I'm playing but on most server the west is more populated...
