It has been a long time since played world of warcraft. I was so addicted into it when it came out. after several DLC, this game has changed too many for me. There is no more excitement when I earned a purple equipment, but you know, in vanilla WOW, it is so hard to earn equipment like that. That gave us a feeling of achievement. I don't like what it looks like right now. Classics is not going to legends, but fast food.
Before the Internet was the Internet as most people know it today. We use to play on a local BBS. Then came AOL in 1991 and some of the first graphical based MORPG's. So yeah, a very long time...
I just started playing Conquer Online 2 years ago, I decided to try playing MMORPG after 6 years of not playing one. The rationale is simple, I just want to have some casual but continuous fun. I don't have 4 hours to sink into Civ V then have my plan ruined by asshole AI. In simple word, just some light gaming after work to relax.
My choice of game was rather simple, I figure that most MMORPG are pretty similar, and I see an ads for Conquer Online, let's go for that. After all, China is something I really like. But, the game butcher the story completely, but I wasn't too angry at that, after all I am not seeking accurate interpretation of the story.
When I start the game, I am thrown into their latest server, which at that time was launched one day before I started. So, in the beginning, I am just playing blindly. The way the game is structure allows you to level up to 100 on the first day I started (it was probably Saturday, so I got more time) but it get harder to level very fast. I don't remember the exact duration, but it probably took two days to jump from 100 to 130, compared to 1 day for 1 to 100. It was probably intentional to keep players coming back after first login.
In the beginning, I didn't join any guilds because I didn't realise their benefit yet. I was recruited into a guild, which I didn't really do anything in it. I got kicked out after taking one week vacation. Then, I got recruited into another guild. This one is almost similar to the first one, incredibly quiet and small. However, for some reason they told me that the top guild is our enemy and I should be careful. I have no idea how they got into fight, but then people in top guild can be quite a bully.
Joining top guild: After some time, one of the more vocal guild member decided to join top guild and invited me, as well as guild leaders, etc. I was surprised since they were fighting the day before. As it turned out, nobody in the top guild even realised there were fighting. It was one of their guy versus entire active fighters from my old guild. Well. So, how are things over here? For the most part, communication is certainly much more active. Chat room light up all the time and people will help you if you request for it. Of course, some rogue members killing other players for fun and getting other members into trouble, but those were rather minor. Overall, it was pretty good time.
started with MUDs back in 1994. went on to UO, continued with WOW, went to SWG, back to WOW, over to SWTOR, on to TSW jumped to Wildstar and now im in Diablo3. thats 20 years of mmo.

Be careful .. some people here don't like others to think that Diablo 3 is a MMO. Personally i think it is close enough.
I got my first taste of MMORPGs in 1998 when I was 11 years old. I played Runescape then. Didn't play it for very long. Had better games to play back then.
The ones I tried, I didn't like the old school MMORPGs very much. I much prefer "the new school MMORPGs" although I haven't been playing those in a while either.
Surprisingly, my first-hand experience with WoW is less than 15 minutes while it was still in beta.

Since 2005; started with the original Guild Wars and the expansions.
Nowadays I've played almost every game on the market to varying degrees, but Guild Wars will always have a special place in my heart and while GW2 is no bad game, it does not come close.
Not sure it counts but my first online/sim was Front Page Sports Football around 1993, it has league/chat/team management. I stepped away until sometime in late 97, early '98 and played UO off and on for about 1.5 years and then EQ a few months after its launch in '99.
So, approximately 21 years if you count FPS Football, otherwise about 16 years

i dont count diablo 3 as a MMO either, I meant it more like, now im in diablo 3 as in the others have watered down into instance based hub games, and if thats what mmo's are these days.. well then d3 aint that different from that .
saying that i dont think i consider swtor or TSW as mmo's either, they are also hub based coop story mission based games.
the last real MMO i played was SWG and before that UO... Wow is a mmo for sure, but only because it has a semi open world, its really close to being a hub based instance coop game though... real close.

So it boils down to how the term is commonly used. And i am with u ... D3 is close enough to many of these type of games.
Started in 2004 with City of Heroes. I'd previously investigated UO, Everquest, and SWG, but the negatives had outweighed the positives in those games.
If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

It's strange how you seem to have such a strong obsession with reclassifying and shuffling around genre definitions. D3 is an ARPG, why is this such a struggle. This is bordering on the lines of OCD at this point.

The problem is that the definitions are nebulous and hybridizing is quite common. Genre is there mostly to help people find things they might be interested in. A guide, not an idol to be worshipped. It's not a straight jacket.

It is a decent game. Space combat is fun. Ground combat can be better.
Much of the storyline content is instanced, so it is easy to just play solo and ignore the cash shop.
