Rift for me. Rift is the most unartistic AAA mmo I've ever played. Character models, animations, atmosphere etc. God... It is a very very bad game at these aspects.
lol I was trying to think back and then I saw people saying Rift and yeah, Rift. I don't know what they were thinking. It's one thing for an older game to have less than stellar animations, but Rift has the capability, but whatever team was tasked with creating them did make some funky stuff.
Runner-up: TSW. But I think this is more a limitation of their engine whereas Rift was a limitation of aesthetic understanding.
I'd have to go with TSW. The whole character creation and animation was such a disappointment compared to the work Funcom did with AoC. TSW's characters were just Fugly and the upper body seemed to have no connection to the legs, just abysmal.

If the question asked about the last five years, I would agree with you. However, 10 years puts the category within reach of LotRO/DDO, whose animations are far worse than TSW by a significant margin.
From the gameplay preview I just saw of Star Citizen, it was pretty bad.
That's a pre-alpha demo, so maybe it's not fair. But they are accepting money and selling "stuff", so maybe it is.
I don't think you can count SC. It's still in development for one thing, and secondly it's not a AAA. It's a Kickstarter Indie project.
At $35 million+ and funding the game at $100 a ship for an unfinished game...
Yes, he can include it.
'Sandbox MMO' is a PTSD trigger word for anyone who has the experience to know that anonymous players invariably use a 'sandbox' in the same manner a housecat does.
When your head is stuck in the sand, your ass becomes the only recognizable part of you.
No game is more fun than the one you can't play, and no game is more boring than one which you've become familiar.

Don't forget that latest exclusive ship sale.. $650 a pop. Yea, when you're charging the car payment on a new Dodge Charger for an in-game item, you most certainly get to be included in this scrutiny thread.
Ten years is an absurd time frame to cover in the video game industry. The video games I was playing in 2004 look nothing like the video games that I'm playing now.
I would have to say that a few MMORPGS in recent history stick out for having particularly worse character animations than previously.
SWTOR ranks pretty high on my list. It's not so much that the animations themselves are bad, but the idiotic global cooldown has your character standing around sucking their thumb for upwards of a second after most animations are complete. There's no fluidity of movement. It's all short blocks of rapid attack animations followed by standing around waiting to be able to mash your next attack button.
TSW is also pretty high on the list for much the same reason as above. Even more irritating is that this is the same studio that spent months doing brilliant motion capture work and creating some of the most believable combat I've ever experience in an MMO with Age of Conan. TSW is such a huge leap backwards that it's just mind boggling.
Lastly I'm gonna go with TESO. The animations feel extremely awkward in a way that's just hard to describe. Character movements in that game just don't feel natural at all.

I don't know if it has the worst, but it's definitely up there. You are pretty much spot on though. Rift could've been decent, but their models, animations, and even sound effects felt so bland and uninspiring.
TSW - worst character animations from all AAA mmos i've played in the last 5 years.
Rift - poor animations during combat. Running (without speed buff) and jumping are actually decent.
ESO - jumping animations are as bad as Defiance. And they still havent fixed the stuttering effect when going down from a jump or short fall. And running animation needs more polish. But combat animation is very good IMO.
Defiance - poor animations overall.
Dragon's Prophet - vomit inducing dodge animation. They literally made your character rotate 360 degrees without animating the character itself.
EDIT: now i remember, Faxion Online by UTV True Games was beyond horrible regarding animations. People probably dont remember that game. It launched in May 2011 and shutdown on august that same year, but that wasnt AAA.
Every game has bad animations according to this forum. Find one game that hasn't had "bad animations" as one of the complaints on a "I quit and so should you" thread.
TSW by far is the worst. Nothing like swing your sword and your watching your upper body move completely independent of your lower body lol. I give Lotro a pass, because the fighting animations aren't too bad, but TSW the combat animations, the running, NPC animations, everything is bad.

LOTRO is far and away the worst. Rift is second. TESO also sucks.
Best is SWTOR.

thats worst than Rift's animations?
Maybe I havnt seen enough of it yet.
Philosophy of MMO Game Design
Yes. Although I should say that I was mainly talking about combat animations when I made my list.
Lotro and Warhammer Online
Rift is crap also... but not as bad as the 2 mentioned above.
Its a toss up between LotRO and TSW.
If I had to vote for best, It would be WoW (obviously) or Age of Conan. I really wish AoC didn't fail. That game was so awesome for the first month.
WAR worse than Rift? Pshhh
Personally I loved everything about WAR's aesthetics, they were one of the main reasons I played
