Consumer market research firm the NPD Group this week released news that'll make Bungie's year - its online shooter Destiny is at the top of the U.S. game sales list for the month of September. Beating out titles like Madden, FIFA and even Middle-Earth: Shadow of Mordor, Destiny can now lay claim to being the biggest new franchise launch in video game history.
"We're, of course, ecstatic that Destiny has set sales records. But what we're most excited about is that this is a game that millions of fans can't seem to stop playing. A month after launch, people are still playing Destiny an average of three hours per day, which is phenomenal engagement." said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing. "Bungie is making weekly updates to the game based on player feedback so there's even more great gameplay to come."

You played the beta you, didn't like it, so you didn't buy it.
Somewhat intrigued though by what you expected / how you consider it to be different from what was talked about pre-beta / launch?

You doubt this? We don't actually need NPD's "guess". We have already had official announcements from Bungie, Activision and Sony that indicate this. (The Bungie figures suggested sales of over 8M.)
As for ESO we don't actually know. It probably was the top selling PC game for 1 or 2 weeks but we don't actually have any data.
Not sure why you are bothered either; you tried the beta, didn't like it so didn't buy it. No problem. A lot of games don't give you that option.
They would've sold twice as many if they had released it on PC...bad business decision is bad.
Off-topic, but I liked ESO in beta, I bought the Imperial Edition and I'm still playing it. People act like everyone left, but there are more than enough people still playing. Haters gonna hate.
Biggest franchise launch in video game history doesn't seem like a horrible thing to have done, business wise.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Everyone except the 3.2 million daily players currently. Its been a little over a month and majority of the disappointed people are already gone and now its just the people who enjoy the game that remains and the number is just going up slowly from this point on. And on top of that bungie just keeps making patches that fix small bugs and balancing issues and content updates every week with new in game events. Most online games at that early point in their life span are going through a shit storm trying to fix game breaking bugs and performance issues.
Also I dont know why so much hate for ESO as well, since the game has come a long way in such a short time and they also have been making content updates that came out on time as planned. The ESO population is pretty damn healthy, I would say a little above average and I cant wait for it to be released on PS4.
Destiny must be the best game ever to sell that well.
Or maybe it's just another overhyped game with a colossal marketing behind it, for a console that barely has any decent game.

I've played plenty of solid games on my PS4 like DIablo 3, Infamous recently and currently playing Evil Within and Borderlands Pre-Sequel. Soon Dragon Age Inquisition So you are mistaken sir.
Im super happy for bungie and all the destiny players!
but why is this a story? I don't remember ever seeing an article before on the top selling game of the month.
Don't get what's so special about this.
The hype can't last.
If this weren't associated with Halo it wouldn't nearly do as well.
They averaged 3.2 million players logging in each day for the first month.
I can not remember winning or losing a single debate on the internet.
Pretty sure DMKano is talking about TESO for which a) the megaserver tech makes it very difficult to say anything about the game population b) have Zenimax said anything.
As for hype selling Destiny - tricky claim given the reviews! - but either way hype cannot keep people playing. And people, clearly, have continued to play. A lot based on the numbers Bungie released. Which is what a lot of reviewers have, and continue, to say.
The reality doesn't support. Don't get me wrong I would like to see it as well but .... of Watch Dog's initial sales only 10-11% were on PC according to UbiSoft. (Watch Dogs being just a recent big budget title for which numbers have been provided).
