"Finally, can you talk about some long-term goals for A Realm Reborn? Where do you want to take the game in the future that would really set it apart from other MMOs on the market? Every successful MMO has one big thing it is remembered for years and years later. What would you like to add to the game that you think players will remember fondly for years to come?"

Yoshida answered the question in a fairly predictable manner. There really isn't any unique vision for Final Fantasy XIV: ARR. It's a mixture of old ideas mixed with a touch of Tanaka's few working ones. About the only truly unique game play elements in FFXIV:ARR are the job/class system and the crafting. While Yoshida's dev team deserves kudos on tweaking those elements of the game, both were originally Tanaka's babies.

FFXIV:ARR had a good start, but as more generic MMORPG elements were introduced to the game, it began to suffer from an identity crisis. The core of combat was created for strictly PvE, much like World of Warcraft, and just like World of Warcraft, the introduced PvP elements do not work well with it. Player housing was rushed out as fast as possible, forcing technical issues to shape the resulting housing system more than player demands. The leveling is built around a more casual friendly vision of the game, while the crafting is built around old-school grind philosophies.

But it also conflicts with the story-telling. What good elements they have in the story end up getting undermined by other game elements. The protagonist is all about bringing together everyone to overcome their differences and then in the next second he's encouraging the very politically charged violence he was trying to stop (a la carte PvP).

There is plenty to be enjoyed in terms of its eye-candy, but all the different elements in Final Fantasy XIV:ARR being made for different crowds quickly become annoyances when they interfere with how any single player wants to play. That is never a good thing for an MMORPG because subtle annoyances can (and do) grow into major ones over the course of the hundreds of hours players are intended to put into the game.

Just saw the last answer by Yoshida. It's very rare to see developers (or producer in his case?) refer to games as themeparks or sandbox. I just can't wait to get a bit more free time to finally resub to FFXIV.
  • FFXIV is the best pve mmo I've ever played. I can't wait for this expansion.

I might have to give this another go with the release of the xpack. My biggest reason for leaving was that there wasn't a Job that I felt suited me. I was excited to see Thief/Ninja, but I am hoping for Red Mage, Dark Knight, Blue Mage to make an appearance.

They still havent fixed the server latency issues.I gave this game a second and a third chance, its still unplayable. And because i always see people say "there is no such thing as lag in FFXIV" i am referring to server latency, not lag,and you should read up on it before pposting.

well done. I loved your questions that shows your understanding of the game rather than some generic journalist gibrish,

on the interview, I do not agree with him that pricing of house are too high, but I think he does not want to say we cant accomodate all players which is the true answer :P , the game memory wont hold up all these players in all these wards.

I would assume paid.  Free expansion would be very shocking.

PS4 plays FF14 incredibly well. If using a controller is a deal breaker pop in a M/K combo that works well too.

I'm just curious how do you reply to folks when they chat with you using a controller? Doesn't it take like forever using one just to type the simplest things? When people are making a quick yell out in a dungeon, can you respond in time typing on one?

    There Is Always Hope!

i play with a controller on my pc It makes the game way to easy. My friends play with m/kb and i just blow them away in terms of dodging stuff i haven't seen before. Now pvp is another thing not enough slots makes it alittle more complicated

Was hoping that the final question in the interview had a better response. I really hope that in the future the expansion will deliver some actual content outside of your 4 hours of weekly coil while praying to RNGESUS that you will actually get gear you need to drop. I'm sure I'll be pelted with comments: "There is so much to do!" but If you don't like spending months to make your character "look fab" then the games 90% fluff content isn't very attractive for players that play more than 4 hours a week.

Due to the games very rapidly stagnating content you are left with Cyprus Glamour Tower and Coil, where it seems like its actually hardcore until you figure out mechanics and it gets so boring to do every week that your static rather play CSGO that show up for turn9. I'd really like to see more meaningful content that has a purpose outside of Yoshi's "It looks cool for glamour" comment. Some real open world content like Hamlet defense from 1.0-1.9 or beseiged from FFXI to bring out the games very attractive world rather than sitting in a stagnant instance.

The "themepark" comment kinda irked me when i read over it, being a FFXI vet and pre ARR player. I really hope that this game will become more than "WoW Lite".

You hit it on the nail, hitting some instance to figure out sequences is VERY boring to me,i want open world content and stuff like Besieged is exactly what i like to see that brings everyone together.

I also hate seeing the NPC sitting there in one spot looks really fake/bad as well as having to run to specific spots is again a dumb way to make combat challenging.

I played FFXI for years for a reason,i like that style of combat and class structure and i liked the FFXI world aside from say Dynamis. Also FFXIV is severely lacking in open world bosses if there is even any.

Too bad environmental effects are not as good as the video, that is an area all games coudl strive for to create a lot more realism in the graphical area.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.

I doubt you would see completely different content than the core system that is already in place. from business prospective, this system is bringing a lot of players and so no reason to alter it, its very risky business wise.

However, in NA fest, he did mention that expansion will bring new raid with different combonation of players that is as difficult as coil, my guess 4 player content and 24 player content ( dynamis?) . Moreover, golden saucer is coming in 2.55 which brings chocobo racing and cards games. I will still be happy to see Besiged like content in ffxiv.

Sorry but you have to stop dreaming. This game is not FFXI and it will never be... Why should Yoshi-P wants to change the core system of FFXIV? We like this system. This is why FFXIV is one of the most popular mmorpgs out there. You have to accept that nobody cares for the minority when there is a majority with a totally different taste.

I agree. It's a move backwards, towards the linear and simple, that makes FFXIV underwhelming. For about half a second I began to consider their crafting system worthy of my time. But in the end, it just plays itself out as a WoW clone with a different skin.

I am really enjoying myself since I came back to FFXIV ARR .I did play this game when it launched but quit about a couple of months in. Now however I am back and am playing a white mage and I love the dungeons. This is the highlight of the game for me. I am enjoying myself playing a role I love. Yes you may scoff at the thought that the game is linear is a step back or whatever other criticism you may have but guess what I am having an absolute blast playing it.

What I love is the strategy and knowing how to play well and getting rewarded. Yes it is not Everquest but I also enjoyed Everquest in 1999 till I quit in 2002 but right now it is FFXIV ARR that has got me interested and happy to log in daily. I am happy because I have a game to play, a game I look forward to playing each day and honestly how many of us can say that . How many of us are still searching and are unhappy that we have nothing. Well I am not one of you I am satisfied and  I thank you Yoshi from the bottom of my heart for giving me a home for my gaming self .

I would also love to see more interesting open world content.  Fates, hunts, typical questing.... it's all just boring.

I am hoping the expansion creates a more engaging end-game.

  • HyanmenHyanmen Member UncommonPosts: 5,357

Of course the open world / FFXI advocates are back in full force... Sadly the inferiority of both open world content and FFXI which the devs are aware of will guarantee the same advocates will be back for the next expansion... and the one after that... and the one after that...

I guess it's a decent trade-off for such a kick ass game as ARR.

Using LOL is like saying "my argument sucks but I still want to disagree".

The crafting system is actually pretty enjoyable. I generally spend most of my time in the game crafting and gathering in the game, and it takes quite an investment to be able to craft the 3-star recipes. My main hope for the expansion is that it generally makes it necessary for most people to specialize in one craft instead of everybody being masters of everything.
