I have to question that considering how often you hear...
I think you are seeing what you want to see rather than what is being shown. In a couple of posts back I listed a whole raft of options for making gold for example, because another poster was struggling getting ahead financially just through questing.
Do you play Distopia? If you have and then quit, how far did you get?
I'm referring to the crap fans say around here whenever someone finds something to their disliking with the game, mostly in relation to PVE aspects or community.
I'm only lvl 20 I have a sub to ESO so I spend more time there. Though I do dabble with AA for something different. It's an okay game, but it doesn't have a lot of options as far as Playstyles go, almost everything seems to gravitate toward guild PVP. When I think options I think of a game like SWG. So it's not about seeing what I want to see, it's about perspective and where paths lead.

It seems to be that... I didn't expect to see so many different approaches to making gold and getting on tbh.
Most seem to stumble at the 'must quest' mentality, but it really is so much more than that.
I mean, it's a standard quest grinder complete with floating exclamations above NPC's. But then it tries to morph into a more open-ended free roam/PvP oriented system.
Nah, you have it wrong here. It uses quests at the start as a 'tutorial' is all, they are just training wheels. You actually are not tied to them though, to be fair. By L15 I was roaming the oceans on my clipper, sneaking over mountains to place my farm in PvP areas, and searching the world for secret places in general.
I think the quest grinding from log in will only be an issue who can only see as far as the quest grinding through indoctrination or whatever of the last decade of playing 100% themeparks.
I would likely have tried the game myself to see if it would fit my taste
Great, another non player here to tell us what works and doesn't work in this game.
I'm also loving AA. I've been playing mmorpgs for a long time with mixed results. I started as f2p but recently decided to sub because AA seemed worth my money. I'm glad I didn't let the naysayers stop me from trying it at least. It might not be for everyone, but it's still a lot of fun. Yes, the game has some problems but Trion will work them out..

my experience as well. I started the game as free to play not going in with any expectations and then i found a game that resembles the best of the best times i had with MMORPG's long time ago.
I got patron and i am happy i found this gem. After so much time of worthless so called MMORPG's, finally a real one.

I also started as f2p, bought patron, lost a week of the time I paid for because it took forever to activate, got bored and a bit angry, lost the will to log in, quit.

no idea what happend to you. The moment i paid with my credit card i got patron access, matter of seconds/minutes.
I started when it came out, and i ended up quiting. I just tried again, and i really like it. I havent seen a game like this since everquest. I hear alot of shit talk about the community, well that atleast on my server is wrong. There is a quest at the start of the elves, where you have to group togther to stop a undead invasion, and it only happens at 2 am and 2pm. There ended up being like 18 people or more, and if you killed the boss you basically lose the quest, because you have to kill 20 guys before the quest is over. That was explained before we started, and 18 random strangers worked together and beat that quest, not because the game forced us to, but because we worked together to reach a goal. That is unheard of in any mmo since SWG, and everquest. That made me sub.
I mean most mmos, the people you play with mit as well be npcs. I played ESO till lvl 15, which took me like a week or more. Not one time did i run into any one willing to work together. The closest is the rifts, or anchors, and that was just a bunch of people running out of no where, and killing it and disbanding. No real communication, or sense they were people.
As for all the pay 2 win, cant play because of no land nonsense. I think that comes from it being something different atleast it was for me. I mean i grew some grapes in a nice spot i found out of the way, and went to sleep. They were fully grown when i woke up, and no one killed them, or took my grapes. As for labor points, I still havent ran out. That was even before i subbed.
After all that new start mmo nonsense. I think this is the best MMO since SWG, and everquest. Great social interaction, the best crafting system, out , that i have seen . The trade runs are bad ass, and i really enjoy the concept. Reminds me of what i loved about Uncharted waters online. Now you haters want to see a real pay to win game, go try that one out.
I dont think i would like this game though, on a highly populated server. Which I am glad most of the people left the game. I only have 1 complaint, which isnt a huge one. I should be able to talk in chat even though I am not 15, because I subscribed. I dont really mind though.
Like someone said in another thread, the highs are really high, but the lows are really low.
Mechanically Archeage offers fun that can't be found anywhere else. Naval combat (and I imagine Auroria to come) are some of the most exciting and intense opportunities to work together with other players in a game (MMOrpg) and strategize to complete objectives that has ever existed.
Unfortunately there are some low lows for me including some poorly designed combat mechanics and skill sets which are underpowered compared to others, the abundance of CC and lack of proper diminishing returns as well as the insanely high damage vs. very small hp pools making combat way too bursty and far less tactical than it should be. Healing is weak, not due to the lack of healing weapons early on, but because the healing specs and abilities are just underpowered compared to the damage output of the average player.
Last on my shit list is the way crafting and RNG is in general. The lack of crafting materials, namely archeum, is ridiculous. This causes crafting to be extremely expensive, meanwhile they give away weapons that are basically free (Hasla) which drives the value of crafted weapons down so low, you can't even sell weapons that aren't hi-grade T2 or T3s. Then theres the fact that its like a < 5% chance to even proc a T3. Ya, and it took me 2 months and 7 attempts to craft my fking Halcyona Rank 5 necklace... thats rank 5 of 10, and you go back to rank 4 every time you fail. Thats just poor game mechanics. Let it take longer, but not have a chance to fuk u. Trion is going to find out real fast how NA, namely Americans react to that sort of RNG, and its already starting to show. Its not even that people want an "easy game" we just want a game where hard work pays off, it doesn't randomly shit on you. That isn't ArcheAge.
Yet, I still play the game because its just fun as shit if you can put all the other horribly designed crap behind you.

Yeah, I also see that a large percent of the people that take the time to talk on forums just like to make up nonsense....... I also know not many people can do simple tasks correctly.... The people complaining about it, I could hundred percent see, hit the reload button like 5 times, or hit back, or a hundred other things you can do to a website when trying to pay for something, that brakes the payment.
As for all the complaints about balance and such, I am not even sure how you could balance a game with so many classes, not to mention get a real idea about what is going on. Its kinda like americas poltical systems the actual people have absoultly no idea whats going on what so ever, but love to tell everyone how things should be fixed.
This is the best mmo I have played in a long time. I will play as long as they dont just out right put stuff in the cash shop that is pay 2 win, and the only way to get said stuff is with real money. Although I prolly would still play for awhile, I really dont want to play the pvp in this game. It looks really easy to avoid pvp in this game..... I am not sure why any one would be going to a mmo for just pvp. Mobas have a 1000s time better pvp system, as well as battlefield, and a bunch of other fps.
Like OP I am having a blast on this game. Finally ding'd 50 and I have been addicted.
I recently got my ship and acquiring it was the most fun I have had acquiring something in an MMO since getting my Warlock horse in Vanilla WoW (the hard way).
I have basically spec'd my Boneweaver like a Discipline Priest... I can't kill anything, I can't heal anything, but I NEVER die!
Archeage is fun and the real world PvP is aweome. The guild alliances, fighting for trade, fighting for pride... BLASTCITY!

Heh yeah honestly, I know how mmorpg'ers on forums are, so I wasn't really expecting it to be a real thing. It was, though.
I didn't lose a whole week though, more like 5 or 6 days. I talked to their support about it before it had gotten activated, so I fully expected them to be aware of it and add the days I had paid and not been activated to the end of the patron period, but they didn't.

It seems you are not yet 50? The journey to 50 was pretty fun all in all, and a big part of the draw of the game for me was the ability to mix up your own class. But one of the biggest things killing the fun in that for me was that 23 skill points was just too few. I would have liked more.
I started off as a demonologist, hoping to make an aoe pet-class. That turned out not to be possible, so I wasn't really happy with that, so at lvl 23 I switched occultism for songcraft, hoping to add some heals to the build. Turned out the heals were crap without a healing weapon, in which case the damage was crap.
Was planning to level some more skill trees to 50 and try to make a healing tank, that would have been cool. But when I started leveling new trees, it was just soooo slooooooow, the crafting and farming was also soooo sloooooow, and I just couldn't take it anymore.
Anyways, glad you're having fun, that's what matters
EDIT: Oh, I see you're not the same guy I've been having this conversation with...
