Today at BlizzCon we went hands on with the first new IP from Blizzard in seventeen years, Overwatch. A competitive team-based shooter, Overwatch looks to do what Blizzard does best; take a genre and refine it, distill it, and bring out the most important parts. Read on for our full first impressions.

Um, this looks amazing.
When can we play?
PvP is the future.
Then you would know that the human race was finally extinct !
And that would most likely be as a result of too much RL PVP, but that's another discussion entirely...
Hard to know when we're extinct, unless your a Spotty Gekko or an
Aerowyn's Video Compilation of ALL things Guild Wars 2
Oh goody, another arena combat game. Because we don't have enough of those around, right?
It does look interesting though, but unless they're planning some PvE content as well I'll pass.
AN' DERE AIN'T NO SUCH FING AS ENUFF DAKKA, YA GROT! Enuff'z more than ya got an' less than too much an' there ain't no such fing as too much dakka. Say dere is, and me Squiggoff'z eatin' tonight!
We are born of the blood. Made men by the blood. Undone by the blood. Our eyes are yet to open. FEAR THE OLD BLOOD.

Lets hope the game will have some kind "Tower Defend" mode, something like mass effect 3 multiplayer is but with some kind of story.
I agree. There needs to be more than just PvP.
From what they show in the video, it looks like Team Fortress 2 gameplay. Blizzard might be adding something slightly more complex to the system (via League temporary level-ups in a match?) but it doesn't look to be genre-defining yet. I'll read more news when it comes but I won't hold my breath in expectation of something much better than what is already out there.
Blizzard could have concentrated on developing the StarCraft fanchise and making it a 3D mmorpg
like they did with WoW, which hey already have a loyal fan base.
Overwatch looks like it was an easy way to get the TF2 crowd to play the game. Capitalizing on the
Blizzard brand, I don't think it is going to work to well for them.
Affirmative. I poked one, it was dead.
Man i would cut off my left arm just to go to blizzcon!
I used to love FPS games...maybe this will bring back the fire in my eyes
mmorpg junkie since 1999
Hmm, this looks interesting. I have predictions though.
Knowing blizzard's history with class balance. They will overpower a class at launch. Everyone will play it. The class will get nerfed. Then everyone will quit.
Well, the game is amazing.
I'm not going to tell you how I came to that conclusion. I'll leave it up to you to figure out.
You can find my left arm in a ditch on the south side of Riverside Freeway. ;-)
That is what Blizzard does... Take a genre, strip it down and use the best bits.
Why would they make another MMO when they already have WoW. They would be poaching their own customers... Also not to be like that but i am pretty sure that MOST people who play SC and do not play WoW would not care one iota about a MMO just because it has a SC skin.
Also Blizzard does not seem to like double dipping these days. SC was the last "double dip" they did and that was because Warcraft was migrating genre.
So while i can understand that some people dreamed of World of Starcraft... This should prove it is not happening... Now that being said there is nothing preventing the new IP to migrate in to a different genre. For an example it sounds like a really nice setting for a adventure game or RPG.
This have been a good conversation
Why Blizzard should make a second MMO when they have Wow? Well, there are several good reasons. For one thing is Wow 10 years old now, and while it will continue earn loads of money for a while longer nothing lasts forever and creating a new MMO takes years so being prepared for that is not bad, particularly if VR finally kicks off now with Occulus and similar products.
Another thing is that there are plenty of MMOers that prefer something else then just Wow, and for that matter many none MMOers that could start playing if the right game came around. Making a more PvP focused MMO that actually was fun would not poach players from Wow but still have a lot of potential if you do it right. After all do PvP rule FPS games and there are millions of potential customers out there.
All that doesn't mean this game wont be fun (it looks pretty fun from what I seen so far), but Blizzard can't live on Wow forever.
Of course they might have Wow 2 already in development or something else, releasing a new MMO right now would not be smart that either. If VR finally kicks off now MMOs developed particularly for that will be the way to go in the future. I believe that we are on the doorstep of a new revolution in how we play games but exactly how that will work out is still hard to say.
It looks lame by Blizzard to almost copy exactly voice over one liners from Warcraft when this is CLAIMED to be a NEW franchise.I am not even a big Warcraft fan but i recognized almost every voice over as being rehashed with very slight tweaks but using the same tonal voice over.
I can see it being fun for some,i guess no different than say Wow but it looks too kiddie for me which is typical of how Blizzard makes their games. There is some fun looking gimmicks for the hero's and i did see some maps have buildings to enter how many and how much a factor they are to game play is unknown unless i play it.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
I cant really say I didnt see this coming. Blizzard has a knack for copying other games, making a couple small tweaks and marketing it as "original".
They pretty much are trying to break into every genre, and some will work, some wont. Hearthstone seems to be doing "ok", but certainly isnt controlling the TCG market, Heroes of the Storm may do well, but wont put a dent into LoL or the MOBA market. This will grab some from Team Fortress 2 or Unreal Tournament, but definitely wont replace them.
Good for Blizzard for trying new things, and wanting to get a piece of every genres market, but those genres have their "WoW" games already. They arent going to dominate any other genre like they have done with WoW. But its fun to watch them try.
What?!
Hearthstone made almost a half billion in revenue in less than 6 months.
And Hearthstone was made by 15 people.
Not enough LOLs in the world for something as absurd as "Hearthstone seems to be doing 'OK'"
Blizzard had already said they have no plans for more MMOs.
Seriously, why make an MMO when you can get huge revenues from games with small budgets and small development teams?
