[Column] General: The Best MMOs with Sailing

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Now that the bold new year of 2015 is upon us and we’re striking out into unknown territory, I felt like it was only appropriate that we take a look at MMOs that let you embark on grand voyages of your own. When doing research for this list, I noticed that there are shockingly few MMOs with robust sea-based content. As a result, some of the games on this list feature sailing as an extra feature, while some of the games have sea adventures as the primary gameplay mechanic.

I miss Vanguard:SOH, building a boat for the first time was such a pain in the behind. Ohh the fun we had....

its got problems with the economy, and i wish the map was larger (expanding north up to bermuda would be about right) but it's a heck of a game.  I used to have a sonypass for it and Eq1.

AA held my interest for 1/10 the time of PotBS and i doubt i'd ever play AA again while if PotBS announced new content i'd head back.

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

    Darkfall is great.

You said the best MMOs with Sailing, not with naval combat.

Wurm Online has real sailing with variable winds, the need to tack to go upwind, more speed if you have more people onboard (manning the oars), etc.

It doesn't really have ship to ship combat (where the ships attack) but you can fight person to person, etc.

SOE published it - but is no longer affliated with the game

When you have the gall to put ArchAge on top you got a real chuckle out of me.  Seriously, ships are just an afterthought in that game.  Three are legitimate sailing games.  The other one that really does not fit is Darkfall.

Next time if you want to write a good article make sure you discuss games that meet your criteria!

Ah, ok thanks. I kinda thought it was that game but then I'm like "well I guess it can't be" lol. I remember trying it once. Seemed completely empty, surprised it's still going.

I've certainly enjoyed PotBS off and on over the last few years, but I'm most looking forward to a game called Naval Action, which takes an even more realistic approach to the Age of Sail. It's in a sort of early access (not the infuriating sort) beta stage at this point, where you can do a bit of lobby-based PvE and PvP, but ultimately looks to be a more open sandbox-style game with trading, building military empires, no levels or classes, etc. The gameplay is already quite promising, to be sure.

Sailing in AA is my favorite part of the game.

I'd rather play Assassin's Creed Black Flag (which is amazing) than these shite games.

As ReesRacer said Naval Action is the one to watch.

Still in Beta but it showing great promise, Open World MMO test will start soon.  Currently the "Sea Trials" are your Ship vs Ship in PvE or PvP.  Certainly worth a look and if the devs say what their Open World will be like it will put PoTBS to shame.

This game is closed but it had one of the best sailing in the mmo world. Pirates of the Caribbean Online.  You could crew up with some other players and they would take the cannons while you steered your ship.  Everyone on board would get a share of the loot and you could board other ships and get their loot as well.  It was awesome.

PotBS is without a doubt the MMO with best sailig mechanics. I tested Uncharted Waters and the combat in that game is like a boat on icescating. It goes fast and  you drive it like a motorboat. Pretty damn silly. In PotBS the wind changes etc, and you take cover amongst allies with your boat. To bad it ain't as complex and nice like Uncharted waters outside the sailing mechanic. My dream MMO would be a child between the two with alittle better graphics.

The ships in Archeage were pretty good. How do you write an article about sailing without mentioning it?

I did fight seaelves on a ship in ESO

And Vanguard had some awesome sailing ships

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

DF:UW is definitely not a great game but if this list was about the best sailing in an MMO, not the best MMO with sailing, DF:UW would take the top spot. It is the most fluid and most immersive version.

And the worst sailing would have to go to Wurm.

This list seems like an excuse to list Archeage first at something.

I wonder what will be next... maybe the "top 5 mmo that starts with A and ends with E". Whatever.

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Is this an official MMORPG.COM article? Archage is already running a PR bragging.
  • rodingorodingo Member RarePosts: 2,870
Well there isn't many of these types of MMOs to choose from.  When PoTBS first launched I had high hopes for it.  But the avatar combat was so awful and the PVP zone mechanics led to some unnecessary "griefability".  Like someone else said, Assassins' Creed Black Flag does an overall age of sail gameplay much better than these MMOs.  Part of that is because it's a single player game of course, but the other half is just because it's designed better.

Afterthought? Have you even played the game at all? Boats are a big moneymaker with pack ganking, fishing and treasure hunting.

Before you post shit, check your facts on the games first.
