Now that the bold new year of 2015 is upon us and we’re striking out into unknown territory, I felt like it was only appropriate that we take a look at MMOs that let you embark on grand voyages of your own. When doing research for this list, I noticed that there are shockingly few MMOs with robust sea-based content. As a result, some of the games on this list feature sailing as an extra feature, while some of the games have sea adventures as the primary gameplay mechanic.

If you're into historical fiction, POTBS is anything but crap. Actually if i made my own list of hidden gems, PotBS would be in the top 2 or 3. It's one of the very few games that actually got me away from eve for a year.
its got problems with the economy, and i wish the map was larger (expanding north up to bermuda would be about right) but it's a heck of a game. I used to have a sonypass for it and Eq1.
AA held my interest for 1/10 the time of PotBS and i doubt i'd ever play AA again while if PotBS announced new content i'd head back.
RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed.

You said the best MMOs with Sailing, not with naval combat.
Wurm Online has real sailing with variable winds, the need to tack to go upwind, more speed if you have more people onboard (manning the oars), etc.
It doesn't really have ship to ship combat (where the ships attack) but you can fight person to person, etc.

SOE published it - but is no longer affliated with the game

When you have the gall to put ArchAge on top you got a real chuckle out of me. Seriously, ships are just an afterthought in that game. Three are legitimate sailing games. The other one that really does not fit is Darkfall.
Next time if you want to write a good article make sure you discuss games that meet your criteria!
Ah, ok thanks. I kinda thought it was that game but then I'm like "well I guess it can't be" lol. I remember trying it once. Seemed completely empty, surprised it's still going.
Sailing in AA is my favorite part of the game.
As ReesRacer said Naval Action is the one to watch.
Still in Beta but it showing great promise, Open World MMO test will start soon. Currently the "Sea Trials" are your Ship vs Ship in PvE or PvP. Certainly worth a look and if the devs say what their Open World will be like it will put PoTBS to shame.

The ships in Archeage were pretty good. How do you write an article about sailing without mentioning it?
I did fight seaelves on a ship in ESO
And Vanguard had some awesome sailing ships
Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)
This list seems like an excuse to list Archeage first at something.
I wonder what will be next... maybe the "top 5 mmo that starts with A and ends with E". Whatever.
My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

Afterthought? Have you even played the game at all? Boats are a big moneymaker with pack ganking, fishing and treasure hunting.
Before you post shit, check your facts on the games first.
I seriously thought the same thing.
This. So much. Trion doesn't speak to its customers, but sure to media outlets.
