POTBS is the best of them all as far as Naval Battles are concerned. Realistic, physics based, you better brush up on your sailing technique. Lines of battle are common and work very good both on Ad Hoc Combat and Port Battles, broad sides are just Epic.

UWO's combat is simplistic, arcade style, and the game is  heavily P2W, you can even buy consumables to make your sailing ship break the speed of sound. Very unrealistic in the name of $$$.

AA is simplistic as well, Cannons are almost there for show, combat is about boarding. However, the experience of sharing the sailing with your mates in any size ship is very nice, and something we have not experienced very often in MMO's.

Never played Voyage Century, and Darkfall well, back at release, it was not possible for all to build let alone have and maintain a ship. The game mechanics caused players to quit it.

I do not understand how anyone can say PotBS is not number one.

ArcheAge....lol. UWO should be number 1.

Darkfall was really good but I am not a fan of UW at all..

An upcoming game called Naval Action currently has the best Age of Sail type system at the moment.

You can currently buy into the beta test of the match games but they are also working on an open world server.

Ah just noticed this was mentioned earlier..

Another poorly constructed list with no clear criteria for rating.

So many ways to dissect this article for its inconsistencies, but whats the use at this point of time.

But I guess someone has to pay the bills

I was banned for pointing out the obvious faults in a game 2 months before it released.
Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.

So ArcheAge is the best sailing experience because the game provides "notable" non-sailing content and there is silly non-sailing grind just to get the ship... Seriously?

Who the heck is paying for write up like this?!

    1. Naval Action

It's in alpha and they've only got combat and a basic match maker right now but they've promised MMO mechanics like progression, economy and player owned ports in the future.

You can buy into the Beta of Naval Action. The ship models look and sail awesome. Its not a MMO yet, but maybe in the future.

The only times I liked sailing in RPGs was Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker and Assassin's Creed 4.

Most of the times naval combat is either messy or boring.

But I'd absolutely love to see a fresh and well-executed Pirate-MMO.

i feel mmos that are built with sailing, ships, water combat and physics is a must have in the future generations of games. they feel right and add more experience into game you are currently playing, giving you plenty to do and to achieve. most of these games listed and currently dead except the new release of Archeage. but you can clearly see the water mechanics is worthy of advancement

I'm sorry, but Archeage has more sandbox content than Darkfall. This is the main reason I don't play DF anymore. Just not enough sand/tools

    What about pirate101

Next time if you want to write a good article make sure you discuss games that meet your criteria!

Afterthought? Have you even played the game at all? Boats are a big moneymaker with pack ganking, fishing and treasure hunting.

Before you post shit, check your facts on the games first.

I did play it unfortunately, spent far too much money on it and the sailing is very basic compared to the other games he mentioned.  Maybe you should get out and play some of these other games before commenting!

Huh?  Darkfall head and shoulders more a sandbox than ArchAge which really is just a themepark with a few sandbox mechanisms.

Someone is being paid to promote a certain failed game

"Taking that and also factoring in the fact that the rest of the game is incredibly polished"

    I dont even have words.

Sorry I have to disagree with the article.  The naval combat is superior in PotBS compared to AA.  Unfortunately I haven't played the other games so cannot comment on them.  The article does come across like the poster above me states; it looks like an article to promote a certain game.

My favorite even to this day is 'Uncharted Waters Online'.

It may come across very old once you step into the game at first, but once things start rolling and clicking for you, your life hours will melt away.

UWO like any  mmo needs time and dedication, but the game is still extremely fun for me.

    +1

Syntax you have to look into Naval Action. If the developers vision comes to fruition we may finally have a worthy successor on our hands.

Played VCO around 8 years ago when it was released. It's pay to win. But pay heavilly, as most cash shop is for better gear or pvp. The graphics are typical Korean design. Lots of grinding. But fun to play a few months.

Played Uncharted Waters also. The game itself is pretty old. It's also lots of grinding, but also fun to play a few months. Lots of different ships available.
