Generally when I'm forced to do something (like log in every 2 weeks or be punished) is when I stop enjoying it. YMMV. In the end its supposed to be a game for fun and relaxation not a second job with deadlines, and demands.

If you payed the box price you ARE their main customer, everything else is just icing on the cake for them

Played GW2 for about a month at launch. Quit after that and i missed all the LS episodes, except part 4 and the last 2.  Started playing again a couple weeks ago and i m  having great fun. After more than 2 years away, the only content related thing that i m missing is the 5 LS parts, which costs like 10 euros. And its some story quests. Its not like a dungeon or raid or even an area locked behind this. Anyway i choose not to buy the ones i missing and still i m able to play the game in full content. The only money i ever spend in GW2 were the price for the box.

Meanwhile, as always, i was playing WoW. In those 2,5 years i bought MoP & WoD (2x45 euros) and 30x13=390 for an overall of 480 euros.

So, do you still think 10-15 euros, for something thats not required to play full content and it was given free if you logged in that period, after 2.5 years is something to complain about?

At least that's the story that GW2 whiteknights were selling in these same boards. Turns out it's all lies now and I have to pay if I want to enjoy the B2P game I already paid for.

Honestly, I don't care if they offered it for free during two weeks. I bought the so called B2P game, and I want to play it when I can or when I feel like it, not when it is convenient for them. Oh well, it just saves me the time of downloading it and bothering with it, and whatever cash I could have potentially spent in the game if I had liked it. Suppose I'll get a couple of champion skins in League of Legends instead.

It's kind of pathetic that people won't pay about a months worth of sub fees for additional content but then they'll tell people WoW is a great game to come back to. Hypocrisy at its finest. GW2 should give new content away for free while WoW charges you $15 a month for nothing but access and then $50 for content every year or two.

GW2 about $18 (if you're too lazy to play for it and feel entitled to be catered to)

WoW about $240 a year plus cash shop. Not only that but WoW takes away content you've paid for (how about some of that Panda land content).

Let's substitute WoW in for GW2: Honestly I don't care if Blizzard offered it for free for 20 levels. I bought the so called B2P + sub game when I paid for Burning Crusade. They owe it to me to give me WoD for free. Oh well it just saves me the time and cash of wasting it World of Biebercraft. LoL probably owes me those champion skins too. I'm entitled to it!

You can still play all the stuff you bought with GW2 and they have added more content at no additional charge. Nice try on the entitlement angle though. Who'd thought you'd have to pay for additional content in a B2P game. Craziness I say.

Wow really stretching it there aren't you?? WOD was a expansion are you saying the living story (which wasn't even really that well liked by many players) is a expansion? Yes you have to pay for WoD but you also have to pay for GW2 EXPANSION HoT, stop trying to make apples into oranges. The living story which was mostly temporary was more like a holiday patch which yes WoW does for free last I heard (I'm not defending wow here as I haven't played in years)

Last I heard GW2 was considered B2P with a cash shop meaning most money come from box sells, Not a Cash shop with a B2P start (meaning it makes most of its money off of cash shop and that those that only buy the box are freeloaders

Not sure why people are berating OP so much about this, he does have a point. The status quo for GW2 was that you would buy the game and play the game without limitation. Of course it was also understood day one that there was a cash shop which is mainly cosmetic.

Yes I know you could of logged on when the episodes were first live, but the idea of playing a B2P game is that you log on when you "feel" like to continue playing the game, its one of the advantages from say a sub based game. If these episodes were just event based quests, then sure I could understand but considering they essentially progress the main story is an annoyance because if you're late to the party, or if you happen to buy GW2 today your story is locked behind a pay wall.

This is different from say TSW which has episodic content you buy to progress your story because that was always made clear as the alternative from the story progression in that series. GW2 however was not.

On a personaly note, its honestly not a lot of money to pay, but I can understand OP's frustration with it. People need to be less defensive about things they enjoy.

If you were not interested enough to log in occasionally, they probably don't care.   If you did not care enough to play the living story when it was happening....this whole issue is so dumb.

edit:  for the record, i'm a player that quit for a long time but will play the expansion.  If I so choose, I may pay for the story from season two, but will most likely just play the game as it is.  You do not have to play the season two living story if you do not want to, and if it adds anything to your character, it's cosmetic.

This is what you get when you believe the words of someone who says :- "As responsible developers we will provide free content to our players."

Boobs are LIFE, Boobs are LOVE, Boobs are JUSTICE, Boobs are mankind's HOPES and DREAMS. People who complain about boobs have lost their humanity.

To be fair, they did warn everyone that they would charge for their patches if you don't log in when they're first implemented.

Edit:  Okay, I just reread what I wrote and realized how silly it sounds, considering the game has little to show for in terms of content updates in the past three years that wasn't a one time thing aside from bug fixes / improvements.  The expectation one might've had was probably that the content was supposed to get you coming back in which to want to use the cash shop.  If this is the case, then I can see why someone is in fact upset.

The fact that you can just team up with someone that has these unlocked and play it makes me wonder why it is even up for sale, to be honest.

Due to frequent travel in my youth, English isn't something I consider my primary language (and thus I obtained quirky ways of writing).  German and French were always easier for me despite my family being U.S. citizens for over a century.  Spanish I learned as a requirement in school, Japanese and Korean I acquired for my youthful desire of anime and gaming (and also work now).  I only debate in English to help me work with it (and limit things).  In addition, I'm not smart enough to remain fluent in everything and typically need exposure to get in the groove of things again if I haven't heard it in a while.  If you understand Mandarin, I know a little, but it has actually been a challenge and could use some help.

Also, I thoroughly enjoy debates and have accounts on over a dozen sites for this.  If you wish to engage in such, please put effort in a post and provide sources -- I will then do the same with what I already wrote (if I didn't) as well as with my responses to your own.  Expanding my information on a subject makes my stance either change or strengthen the next time I speak of it or write a thesis.  Allow me to thank you sincerely for your time.

I have days where I play and make about 200 gem on a bad day id still probably make 100 gems flat.....the real grind is really just playing the item mall in general...but to be fair I do wish ArenaNet took a different approach to the whole living story.... Like polishing the existing game... At the start of season 2 I played my Human Guardian and was kinda disappointed with all the typos and glitches.(All bug reported at the time I counted like 16)... Attention to detail could go a long way...  I mean when I finally do have to read its kinda laughable when they cant even spell the Tyria properly...

Problems at start? I can hardly remember any problems at start and have been playing since day 1 for approx. half year without interruptions. Enjoyed a lot ... then not sure why fun was gone. Logged after several times just to quit after short. I do not like that "Innovative" questing of theirs, would be much better to have classic questing. But still hope some day to return to play because have good memories. But it what you say is true, they become too greedy, not sure if will play at all. In past nothing in cash shops was mondatory.

There they are again, the we want all for free folks....  Obviously this is a game that tries to find new ways to make money, not because they want to drain the customers, but because they want the game and the development team to survive...

on top of that, they announced it, i myself missed one eppisode and gladly payed for it...

now get over it and pay the price for this great content, or move on to whatever other game you like best...

personally i wish there where new eppisodes every two weeks, and i would gladly pay 200 gems for each of them..  Its like 2 euro for quite some hours of fun...  So who cares..

Best MMO experiences : EQ(PvE), DAoC(PvP), WoW(total package) LOTRO (worldfeel) GW2 (Artstyle and animations and worlddesign) SWTOR (Story immersion) TSW (story) ESO (character advancement)

so, a guy that shows up 2 years later and havent expressed even slight interest in the game in meantime complains that he has to pay some measly sum to play trough comletely optional (and really small part of the game) that he can get for free anyway even if he missed promotion when actual customers got it for free.

    [mod edit]

  • grimalgrimal Member UncommonPosts: 2,935
I don't really care either way since someone pointed out 250 gems is around $2.50, but as someone else mentioned this can't be much of a money maker.  But it would have been a better move to just to give it away free rather than charge such a trivial amount.  Would have given them brownie points.

I surely aint throwing you free drinks just because you had lunch in my restaurant 10 years ago.

    You are pretty much nobody.

OTOH, regular valued cusomers regularly get free drinks thrown in.

    Real world is a biatch.

    LOL

You can log in and get the all for Free. Don't expect stuff  to be free all the time. It's still free by playing the game and earning gold to buy gems as well.

tbh.... play the game, earn gold, exchange for diamonds, buy the stories you want to play and enjoy.... done deal?

Other than that I can only point out that all 8 episodes cost less than 2 months of a subscription on other games.

At the launch of GW2 we were promised that there would be no major expansions (one coming up soonish) and that patched expansions (episodes) would be free for everyone.

With all changed over time I've lost interest in GW2 and might pick up the new expansion. But now that I read that I have to pay 1600 gems (€25) to keep up with the game I might as well just ditch the game completely and let this one sink along with all other NCSoft owned titles.

Fell free to post quotes on your claims, you know, so people can actually read those "promises".

Aside from WS, all NCSoft titles are doing great, so yeah, you wont be missed.
