Like the title says, this is ridiculous. Is this their idea of calling players back?
I bought the box, and stopped playing a month after simply because the game had many problems in that time. Now, after seeing that a new Xpansion is arriving I decided to reinstall and retry the game, only to see that I have to pay to play...

Yeah! All development costs for these episodes should be free! Programmers should be paid like waiters and only be able to survive off of tips from our good will!
It's not enough that they offered these for FREE for the first 2 weeks, all you had to do was log in, no, they should just make everything they do FREE!
...Am I doing this right? Sarcasm is hard over the internet. In short: Get a job. If you don't have one of those, grind for gold to exchange for gems, that doesn't take long either.
The episodes were free when you logged in during their appearance.
You can ask a friend though to to invite you to his story instances and still play it all for free.
Other than that I can only point out that all 8 episodes cost less than 2 months of a subscription on other games.
Why would I do that? Theres no shortage of other games to play...
Plus, it was not my idea to make the game buy to play, in fact, when I bought the game it said I could play without monthly fees and never stated that I would have to pay for future content... so theres always that legal path to pursue I think.

Good luck...
People have played these and got the reward, now you want to come back and do all of them? Sorry they are all TEMPORARY - that means if you didn't get it at that time, you lost out. You can get it if you want to pay as they have to setup a special instance just for you.
This was the point of the LS content - temporary to make it seem the world was living.
Not quite, I've played Guild Wars 1 until the release of GW2 and I never had to pay for anything except when new expansion were released, and I would have gladly payed for HoT, and I already spent some money on the in game store for pets and clothes.
I just dont think it's fair to pay 200 gems for each quest of the main story.
No, it's the ONLY move for a B2P game.
Unless they cheat and have a Cash Shop on the side...
The OP bought the game and can still play it 2 years later, so I see no problem there. No fraud or misrepresentation. There's even some additional content from the last 2 years thrown in for free, complete bonus. However, some additional content was only free for limited periods. Devs gotta eat too.
Its not really. IMO Anet has lied to its customers. Many people, myself included that buying into the B2P game is the game you play between MMOs. That you could play this game along side playing your sub game you play each week. This was their selling point from before beta. IF he want to take them to court to get his 60 bucks back thats on him. Anet used to get me buying and spending gems every few months. This move has stopped me from supporting them all together. If I could get my 60 bucks back, I would take it and walk away from this game for all time.
The game is "Buy To Play".
You buy the box, you play the base game.
You buy the Season 2 stories, you play them.
It still makes the game Buy-2-Play.
And some didn't even have to buy those Season 2 chapters because they were absolutely FREE to those that kept on playing the game. Those that played the game either supported the developers through boosting player number indirectly or did so directly by also purchasing Gem Store items. A.Net provided these players with free content updates to them as part of their dedication to playing the game.
Those players that abandoned the game only to return on a whim just because aren't going to get the same preferential treatment as those that have played the game for a long while. Think of the Season 2 chapters as "Veteran Rewards" for this matter. Veterans -players that stayed and played- will get the features for free while others who missed it CAN get it if they want, but at a price.
"Shoot first, ask questions later!"
No it's...
"Sue first, ask questions later!"
Options:
1. Log in when they announce a new episode of the living story and participate in it like everyone else.
2. Ask a friend to invite you to join them in their Living Story instance... heaven forbid we have friends.
3. Pay 200 Gems or ~$2.50 per episode of the Living Story and do it all later by yourself after the fact.
So a p2p game would charge you $15 just to come back and look at it with out giving you any new content. GW2 might charge roughly the same to see the new content which is optional. If you keep playing GW2 again for more than a month this time, then guess what? You will not be charged again. If you wanted to play another p2p for another month, guess what? You will have to pay them $15 again for the same content you payed and played for the previous month.
I don't feel bad for you OP. All you had to do was log in when the new episode was released to get it for free like the rest of us. You didn't even have to move your character one inch in the game world.
"If I offended you, you needed it" -Corey Taylor
OP, better install some F2P game, you'll have much more content than LS for $2.50...
On a B2P game adding a pay wall for the first bit of content you try will cause this feeling most times. As gamers this is not an action we should defend. I agree MMOs need to make money but there are some things they should not do. P2W and Pay Walls are 2 of the lowest ways to make money. Anet launched this game as a B2P game you can come and go from to play between other MMOs. As they put it, buy the game and come as go as you please. Thats now a lie. Now its go for to long and go through the pay wall before you come back.
Because it was so difficult to spend 60 seconds of your time to log in (and do nothing more) during each 2 week release period of a story patch.
Quite frankly, if you couldn't even give the game that much of a passing glance, you don't deserve said content for free.
Sometimes I wonder if you guys have nothing else better in life to do than bashing various games on the forums and feeling superior by it. Yes, I'm looking at you @Nanfoodle and OP.
Did you forget that you can exchange in-game gold to gems?
Did you forget that you can have people unlocking the story for you?
Should ANet give you money for playing their game?
I guess people like you just want to sit on your arse and get spoonfed with liquid gold. You can unlock the whole season with gold for less than a week.
Yes, if this is the person that you are, then Gw2 is not for you. Also, those chapters WERE offered for free. Your mistake you didn't take an advantage of it.
Are you going to sue Walmart because the discounted Nutella is out? Judging by your reaction I'd say you guys would....
How important is the story content anyway? Do you need it to progress or something?
No, I don't play MMOs for story.
Waiting for:
The Repopulation
Albion Online
Not to mention that Gw2 is one of the fastest loading MMOs on my PC. The only game that challenges the loading time of Gw2 on my machine is EVE Online. And it still boots slower if the game has been recently patched.
It costs you nothing to login once on new episode. It takes 10-15 seconds on my machine. Even if you have mechanical drive, it shouldn't take more than a minute....
To be fair, it's go through the pay wall if you want if you come back.
Yes, I agree it sucks having to pay 200 gems for the main story if you missed the "grace" period where it's unlocked for free... but I have to say that compared with other F2P/B2P games that implement the same mechanism I've found that Anet's style feels VERY lenient, at least to me.
You can get it for free if you log in during the period that particular update is live, even if it's only for a second (if you want to go to tokyo in TSW, for example, you need to pay, no way around it), you can still play the whole content for free if you go in with a friend that has in unlocked, you just miss the rewards, plus all the associated maps (dry top and silverwastes) and open world content is free for everyone whether you unlocked it or not. And while I know some people don't think that counts, you could also purchase it with in-game gold, just convert to gems little by little when you can.
Also, as I said, I do agree that the 200 gems paywall sucks... it sure beats the model they had in season 1 where if you missed it, you missed it for good, it's gone, no way to play it ever again.
What can men do against such reckless hate?
Option 1 )
Option 2) Log in the game, receive daily rewards, receive laurels, trade laurels for t6 mats, sell t6 mats, acquire 30g, convert gold to gem > Buy Living Story Season 2.
Option 3) Run daily dungeon tour, receive lots of gold, convert some to gems > Buy Living Story Season 2.
now: GW2 (11 80s).
Dark Souls 2.
future: Mount&Blade 2 BannerLord.
"Bro, do your even fractal?"
Recommends: Guild Wars 2, Dark Souls, Mount&Blade: Warband, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning.
So the first thing I am to be forced to do as a returning play is grind for gold? Ya no. Im not bashing GW2, I have supported it with my cash since beta. I dont support pay walls. They cause bad feelings in most gamers and is a great way to lose players. There are so many smarter ways to get players wanting to give you their money. This video I will post below covers very well what pay walls do to gamers and Anet is making a HUGE mistake.

So your going to sue a MMO with a cash shop, a said MMO you had no interest in till recently, because not absolutely everything in the game is free?..Are you going to sue them over charging for Heart of Thorns as well? Because by your logic that should be free as well....Good luck with that
If it makes you feel better though, Season 2 is hardly worth getting in a fuss over...
This looks like a job for....The Riviera Kid!
How is anything funded? It has to be somehow and for active players the story stuff costs nothing.
I don't think the Living Story is particular great but it's a good deal for the active players of GW2. Not sure how you can argue against that..
