Too bad they had to redefine MMO to fit them into the genre.

I was thinking about the grand theft auto (gta) series. and how that got me as a gamer to look for more games like it. cause gta iv is a great game. anyhow I stumbled across a game all points bulletin.

I can't play it, or get it to work. but, that's another story.

anyhow. it shows how deep and massive the mmorpg world really is. I've ben into online games for over a decade and still there is undiscovered land that not even sites like this can open me up to.

and yes I know apb is listed on this site.

    that's not the point.

    the point is

there games are listed on this site that not many of us have tried. people are too afraid to be called names. to be persecuted. for what?!!! for there prefereed game? for their preferred payment method?

    call me scrub.

Well... MMO´s as a genre are doing fine....

MMORPG´s as a sub-genre are having a identity crisis of sort, not really sure of what it is doing right now or where it is going. Some are holding out for old school to be "in" again and others are testing where the limits of how much profit you can make of it are... I would compare this to back when FPS games was all the rage and all the limits where tested... Lot of shit came out of that era and now things have sort of settled down in to a handful of sub-genres... One or two actually overlapping with the MMO one.

Now the one that is dying a pre-maure death is the MMOR genre... Racing games simply seem to be unable to gain proper traction on the MMO landscape...

    Any way... Life goes on.

This have been a good conversation

It is not "too bad" .. it is "great". There are more things to talk about. If MMOs are not redefined ... there is probably a lot less traffic and debate here.

I think the biggest killer for the racing games is that almost every one of them has been seen almost universally as pay to win.

Many genres just flat-out become worse in MMO form.  (Referring to actual MMOs, not 5-player-arena "MMO".)

Racing is a good example of MMOs directly reducing game quality, as an 8-player race ends up being a pretty tight competition  with clear winners and losers, while a 128-player race would almost guarantee you're lost in the pack.

Most genres are generally worsened from being MMOs, apart from the shared space for trading and socializing.  It's even true of RPGs (where world content tends to be much lower quality than 5-man group content where your decisions and skill have a significant impact on how well you do.)

I seriously hope this was meant to be sarcastic, because all three of those games are awful, and two of them aren't even worth wiping my *** with.

I do not think MMOs are dying, but putting in these hybrid mobile game crossovers and using them as examples does not prove the point.

What I feel is "dying" is the depth of the RPG side of MMO.

Take off the rose colored glasses!

MMO's are changing for the best, so either play these games or quit playing mmo's.

Seriously, there is no room for the community that played decent mmo's... GET OUT!

Don't give all the credit to the OP. This site, MMOFRONT, massively, reviewers all classify WoT as a MMO too.

While discussing the new Game List coming to mmorpg.com, Bill Murphy has already said WoT is not an MMO and that games like LoL will fall under a category called MOBA. Maybe everything isn't as rock solid as you'd like to hope, eh.

nah .. i will just modify my post to say .. most other websites like massively and mmofront, and reviewers consider WoT a MMO .. and this place (if it indeed changes) is the odd man out.

Before then, the gamelist of THIS site still agree that WoT is a MMO.

Guess you missed the part where the racing games are getting a huge following now on consoles whereas there is only a small percentage of players that stay with MMO's after the initial launch.

And despite the claims here that it's all due to F2P by some people on these comments it's actually not! What it's directly due to are several factors.

The first being the economic model. This latest craze for B2P and F2P and sometimes subscription models to adopt cleverly disguised economies that require players actually pay to progress in order to get the gear they need (or resources for said gear). The other problem with these new Korean economic models is the lack of loot rewards for simply playing the game. Gone is the carrot on a stick which is psychologically (whether those who disagree with it or not dislike it) and actually WHY so many people played MMORPGs in the first place! This combined with having a Role in the RPG (ie the trinity) actually made people feel like they had a purpose a job to do in the team setting AND it gave people rewards for doing those roles! Now that's gone too! This genre is eating itself alive because these developers are losing sight of what made these games popular in the first place instead of providing solutions to the problems these original ideas presented.

The second being content. The notion that less is more has never worked for any mmo out there catering to the 1% has been shown time and time again to be detrimental to the mmos we've seen out there and it's still being developed and this tiny portion of the population in the mmo genre is still being catered to! The whole idea of not providing enough content to keep a player playing is just wrong. It's ongoing, the grind in these western games these new ones from 2011 until today have been unprecedented! They simply must stop with this grind nonsense this is not China, this is not Korea the west does not need yet another grind out there! And older titles converting to a grind has lead to more players leaving in disgust than ever before! Take STO for example!

The third being diversity. There are so many types of players now that the game developers who want to stay on top have to adapt. Even after the expansion has been out for several months WoW is still at 10million and this is the reason for that, they adapted to their new audience they know their new demographic and they catered to those people because it's smart to include everyone but they did it in such a way that they didn't leave out the hardcore 1% crowd because they knew that those who play casually still have ties to the hardcore crowd and don't want to see their friends leave. It was very smart on Blizzard's part.

World of tanks is fun, but merely a big waste of time (for me anyway, not much to do). Games shouldn't fell like a waste of time.

Eve online itself never felt like a waste of time, not even when grinding, because the potential for fun gameplay was always present.

I have 290x in crossfire, and don't really have games to play, as I see it.

Imo, there just aren't any good MMO's out there and it really annoys me.

I am sure I could make a great MMO myself, but I don't have the money, nor the technical know how.

I don't mind WoT being on the site list, they just need a column to say it is a MOBA if that's what it is? Maybe we will get that column on the new forums.

Well WoT is just a shooter like CoD et al only with tanks, so who knows what column that will fall under. But MOBAs will be in the MOBA section. Apparently.

It will really help for those looking for a specific type of game, which is the way it should be obviously. When I left WoW in 2005 I found myself on this site looking for a new MMO and the list (which wasn't so messed up at the time) led me to EVE online which I'm still happily playing to this day. I can only imagine if I had stuck with WOW all these years and decided it was time to leave and find something new, I wouldn't spend more than 5-10 minutes going through the Game List as it now as I'd be forced to go through way too many games that I have no interest in. I'd just move on to a site that was more organized.
