just for the record, even tho i don't like mr potter at all... a creator has FULL controll over his/her creation.
you don't like it? yea well, you know what they say.
I enjoyed the HP movies somewhat, and have no hate towards them but the thought of a videogame based on it makes me want to throw up. The actual magic in the series never reached any sort of state of logical balance. There were all sort of silly gadgets and things, but the spellcasting went from unlocking a door, to disarming your opponent, to blasting a largely ineffective lightning bolt, to instant kill. Seriously, the franchise is fine as a kids story but the "meat and potatoes" is simply not there. Quidditch (or however it's spelt) is an excellent example of how there is no sense of balance whatsoever. The majority of players waste there time batting around an ugly ball for no real reason when one player chases the true objective so they can win. I never once seen the game end because of anything the other players did. It's just a lopsided mess.
Sorry HP fans, that's just how I feel.
All of my posts are either intelligent, thought provoking, funny, satirical, sarcastic or intentionally disrespectful. Take your pick.
I get banned in the forums for games I love, so lets see if I do better in the forums for games I hate.
I enjoy the serenity of not caring what your opinion is.
Apart from the outstandingly bad KS video (one of the wizards actually casts a spell by saying "Cadabra" lol), and the kid CEO (that alone may explain why Warner's did not back these guys), I think they have done themselves a huge disservice by hiding things.
That wizard actually said "Avada Kedavra", the killing curse, though it wasn't captured very well so I get why you heard it that way.

Sorry but this this is complete BS. The fuck is this trend nowadays where game companies feel they should put their hands directly into our pockets first.

This production is not intended for a profit, but to develop a game fans around the globe can enjoy as they dive into the magical world."
Sounds like a roundabout way of saying, "we don't have the rights to do this."
That just not possible. You can't make use of copyrighted material (for commercial purposes or otherwise) without explicit permission/ agreement from the owner. Otherwise lawyers would be up the wazoo on this.
A few minutes of digging proves that incorrect. On their forum:
"DISCLAIMER: This Product is not Endorsed or Produced by Warner Brothers Entertainment. This production is a Non-Profit development created for the sole purpose of supplying fans the experience of creating their own wizard or witch within the beloved and reknown world. All Characters, Logos, Names and Music/Sounds are copyrighted by Warner Brothers. We are not affiliated with Warner Brothers and are not producing this production for a profitable income."
All's I can say is.... if they truly did not reach any sort of agreement with Warner's, they are just inviting legal troubles.
My unprofessional research on copyright law:
Copyright laws apply to profit and nonprofit organizations. Although U.S. copyright law specifically cites a nonprofit educational purposes as a primary consideration in support of "fair use" of a copyrighted work, it is hardly "carte blanche." In general, a nonprofit's use of copyrighted material gives its claim of fair use greater weight than a similar use by a for-profit company.
Countless IP related, non profit mods/addons have been killed due to just the threat of legal action by property holders. These guys will go under the second that happens.
I'm a huge HP fan, and have wanted a real HP MMO created for years, now. With that being said, I'm glad to see there are others here that aren't immediately taken with this, just because it has the HP name attached. That shouldn't be too hard, though, considering the college project feel to this company and their "game".
HP is a ridiculously huge IP, with enough money, and a big enough fan base - if an official game were going to be made, with the approval of Rowling and/or Warner Bros, it would a bigger deal, through an established MMO company who knew what they were doing, and could provide the quality it not only deserves, but would be funded enough to achieve.
As others have stated, though, this project doesn't have the approval of any of the powers at play with the IP, and this isn't an experienced company, capable of the quality it deserves. The chances of this being completed, or being anything worth playing, are pretty non-existent.
I believe JK has made comments about an MMO being proposed before, but she/they chose to make Pottermore instead, for more of a reading experience, rather than a full fledged multiplayer game. I'm not saying it can't or won't ever happen, but it's sounded to me like it's not in the plan currently.
I think it'd be a great storytelling medium - I've even envisioned the finding of memories, hidden or given, to be part of the game/story mechanics. Obviously, then, the crafting, purchase, or discovery of a Pensieve would be required, and you could explore those memories in an instance. New story material could be introduced that way, much like JK's additions found on Pottermore.
I'm definitely itching from an HP MMO, but only something approved by Rowling herself, and done by a studio able to make it the AAA experience it should be.
Game History (the ones that count): Everquest, Everquest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, World of Warcraft, Planetside 2

So I guess she has nothing to do with it, because apparently WB owns the Potterverse
Firstly, I consider J "K" Rowling to be the luckiest writer in recent history. Without this ridiculous amount of luck, there is no way a sub-par story like Harry Potter, which is little more than a running gag loosely held together with a back to back deux ex machina galore, would have made its creator a multi-millionaire.
And lastly...an MMO for this IP from this particular dev house is something that I really want to see take shape! Well, not that I give two ducks about the actual game. But the train wreck that this...Harry Potter MMO...will surely become, would make for some priceless entertainment.

I was banned for pointing out the obvious faults in a game 2 months before it released. Now after release, repeating the very same words from back then would be like preaching to the choir on this site.
They dont even own the rights to make the game yet. WB owns them and they havent acknowledged this being a thing.
So for now, you can back.. but if it gets close to being funded and the time runs out, make sure they have confirmed that this game has the rights, else the money is fucked.

I agree. Her novels were full of things that just plain didn't make sense if you thought about it for a minute. I mean even if you allow for magic. They were also full of so many inconsistencies it was almost painful. But like you said as books for children they are fine. As a child I didn't notice things like so much myself.
Comments
lol Well loads of people play Pandas in WoW who are way too old to play cute fury animals .
Still I can't talk I play a rabbit in Tera and I'm too old to play that really lol
But then again rabbits are cool and pandas are not . lol
Um... she's not a Murican ya know...
You got that right! But then calling some of them "actors" is also a bit of a stretch.

a 30 person team is only wanting 100,000?
.....
Yeah, Right.
Damn shame though. As a triple A studio with the HP IP coulda printed money for a decade had they done the thing properly.
