I wanted to like ED. I bought the alpha package to support them but the decision they made killed the fun for me.
1. Insta switch between solo and multi. I want to play multi but soon i switch back to solo, to be safe just in case. No incentives for multi. And solo gets boring soon. This makes multi redundant and solo boring
2. p2p network model. meaning that server can't check if the clients use hacks and cheats. Sooner or later massive exploits will appear .There are olready complains about dome invulnerable peps in stations.
3. No single player as promised. So when game goes belly up that's it.
4. The game is pretty much supercruise online , or GravityMasters. You spend like 80% of time looking how f...g ship accelerates or slows down.
5. Dull inventory system. All cargo/gear must stay on ship. I guess to simplify "saves"/database access
6. Not much to do really in game.
7. Flight model that is more atmospheric then space.
So after couple hours spread-ed over couple days i got bored and quit.

The 'good' stuff has always been just around the corner with ED. Groups on launch? In a multiplayer game? Crazy talk!
They're a bit too busy doing intricate balancing and tweaking with their massive sledgehammer to bother with much of what you mention though, I would of thought.
It looks like is other people opinion too.
I played the initial elite on spectrum and maybe the expectation have been high. Or maybe frontier missed that a lot of things evoluated since then.
Another thing that i hate is the interface. It may be good for hotas but for mouse+keyboard is pure sh1t.
Sadly FD seems to be proving to be unable to manage this game properly, take this last patch 1.1 they new about the numerous bugs from beta and yet said WTF lets roll it out anyways!
~ collision damage bug (scrape something with your wing and poof instant explosion/death)
~ unclaimable bounties
~ point defense turrets targets your own missiles
~ game crashes for various reasons selling exploration data entering stations etc
~ problem with sound for those with high end studio type sound set ups
~ trade routes bugged and lose value far too quickly
etc etc
There are numerous threads about this patch but I found this one particularly funny and maybe even agreed with it some!
Brenics ~ Just to point out I do believe Chris Roberts is going down as the man who cheated backers and took down crowdfunding for gaming.
Yep that's how I feel ....
TOTAL WAIST OF MONEY.... IMHO...!
Not sure what the issue is with this, they allow people like me who only play multiplayer, they allow people who want a single player to only play solo, and they allow cowards to switch to solo to be safe. Everyone wins.
+1
This game could be grand with just a little more interaction.
Releasing it without ANY group functionality, let alone content, is just plain stupid. No trading between players? No hotspots, players spread out like butter on too much bread?
Sure, I could play it solo, but whats the point in essentially playing a "grind only" game (as there is ZERO narrated PvE content) solo?
This is like dogfight-EvE without the player interaction, and fun until you've done all there is to do, which takes about 20-30 hours ingame.
M
That is what the next two upgrades are for, especially Update 1.2 "Wings" and 1.3 "Wing Beacons" ... adding much anticipated grouping functionality to E:D
And for content and story you may want to check the Galnet and visit the systems mentioned there:

Have fun
Wings should have been in the game since release
Yes, it should have been.
But it was not.
Blame X-Mas.
Better now than never.
Have fun
Seems strange to complain when the game has only been in development for 2 years, If people can't temper their expectations for an MMO that uses the market norm then what chance has a game like Elite got?
Yes it's shy on features but as above, what can you honestly expect for 2 years dev time? It's getting a lot of updates enhancing all aspects of the game, so what we have now is no basis for what we'll have in 12 months.
If you struggle with making reasoned, informed decisions and are unable to base your expectations on real circumstances then put the game aside and come back after 2-3 years - after which it will have been through the development period that most MMOs go through, you will be much happier then, guaranteed.
I agree with some points, but not so much with others.
I bought it, must have played about 50-60 hours over the last few months, it's fun and quite pretty but it's not amazing sure. The online play is where I have the most fun, interacting with other players is great in this game. Tried solo and its really boring as there is indeed nothing much to do on your own, Im not sure if I would play a single player version, without other players its lacking in all departments.
However, as a massive Elite fan, ultimately it's the nostalgia that keeps me playing.
I have gotten my moneys worth already, easily, and will continue to do so. Maybe no more than a few hours a month, but who cares, I can indulge and get my Elite fix whenever I want.
They continue to update and improve the game.
Anyone who bought it should have known exactly what they were getting, I know I did.
Not encountered anyone cheating so far, but then the galaxy is a very big place.
Expresso gave me a Hearthstone beta key.....I'm so happy
When the game launches and sells for the same price as other 'released' titles, it is not wrong to expect a certain level of content. Development time is irrelevant when the developers stamp the game as gold status. That places it in the same arena as other titles. Perhaps they would have been better off considering this period as an extended beta or pre-release.
Its the same as with the other games relying on publishers that are on the stock market ... the company stock is on the stock exchange and to meet the quarterly/yearly target numbers they had to release before X-Mas. No matter in what state the game was in at that time. Otherwise you risk cancellation.
Do i think E:D will some day be a great game ? Yes.
Do I think E:D is good value for money at the moment ? Yes.
Do i think E:D still needs a lot of improvement ? Heck, YES !
Have fun
I feel completely the opposite, the only thing I will agree with you on is lack of activities, but that will all change soon enough, sometime this month the Multiplayer grouping patch hits with added content etc.
I think most people get turned off of ED because they do not know what to do, there is no hand holding etc, as a space sim it is a great game...the universe is massive...more so than nay other space game to date and that is mentioned for the near future. Same thing goes for your opinion of supercruise...its fng space man lol, you want instant travel? then go play some crappy themepark space game.
Regardless I do agree that the game is not complete...but...so does Frontier...if you pay attention to what they are working on...take a look at their road map...the future is beyond bright for this game, I think most gamers fail to recall that when Eve online first launched it was a pile of dung, give this game another 3-6 months and it is gonig to take shape, BTW have you played since they patched in the community goals and faction rep? Eventually thos ewill play into system wars etc....
Again...you may not like it now...but you wont have to resub to check it out when they add in content.
You say the same thing in ever ED post, just bashing the game and going on about your waist, if you have a waist of money it should be no issue for you if you waste a little on a game you don't like.
They are very clear in their advertising about the state of the game and the state it is in is pretty impressive for the time they had to develop it. Compared to SC this is miles ahead.
The performance of the engine is amazing even on older PC's and visually it is simply stunning.
There is really no need to be bashing it, no matter what waist you have.
You are acting like ED has failed or something. According to FD, ED has sold better than expected and they are expanding their Dev team.
I can agree with this EXCEPT #1 above. I play mostly solo because I WANT TOO. If I had no choice and were FORCED to play multiplayer at any time, I would be out of the game in an instant.
But yes, the game as is comes across a pretty boring after a short period of time. Looks great but with little substance so far. I say "so far" as the devs are promising more as time goes by. However, I thought beta was over this was suppose to be the full launch version.
Let's party like it is 1863!
Not really, FD have always said that what would launch would be a foundation that they would add too. Remember this game has only been in development for 2 years, how much content are you really expecting to be in the game?
ED is a very fun game that does space combat better than any other game out there, the feel of flying your ship, of undocking is just amazing. That being said, mining is bare bones (even the dev have said it is), exploration is not as complex as expected and that sucks. The mission system is not great (and the Dev have stated that it will be revamped). It needs more content that is for sure, but as long as FD keep releasing free content patches it will get there. Same way that EVE online did.
In the end what kille dthe game for me was the slow YAW.
They devs explayned is slow because they want to be slow and that's the end of it.
My guess is that is slow because they want o have the game playable with a game pad for consoles.
I bought it early April, played it. Felt very shallow and desolate.
I got a refund. I already got the refund and I can still access and play the full game.
I don't really play it though, whenever I play space games I look for mining. And the mining in this game isn't that great in my opinion.
I am just happy I got a refund.
