My theory is that you aren't swinging a sword or shooting magic out of your butt No, I personally don't like the game but it is different in a market where most new games seem to be the same ole thing.

no... what he's saying is that he hates this game that he never took tihe time to learn to play.
SORRY people but a three or four year old game that is still growing says something... it may be that the game is well done, or the fact there is no serious competition to it, which is sad the concepts that CCP has done in EVE are well done, gameplay is good, the response form CCP to the input from players is the best in the biz! To attempt to get the thread back to the OP's request:
I think EVE is successful and BUCKING the normal trend of MMO's to start out hot, peak, plateau and then fall off because of several reasons, but this has to be personal, so here 'tis:
NUMERO UNO A persistent world on one shard. You foul up, you really foul up. You succeed, you literally can become famous. (ahem Hardin, mr. amarrian pig dog you. -grin.)
I wasn't an MMO player prior to EVE. Not because they didn't look interesting, but my 'suspension of disbelief' is fairly high, and tbh, nothing I saw matched the pen/paper D&D/Traveller days. I saw mechanics, farming, pk'ing (with no reason), etc., and the biggest reason to me: multiple shards. What happened on one shard mattered little to nothing except to that shard. There was a 'gamyness' to this concept that turned me off.
EVE and its developers sold me on the concept of an MMO as SANDBOX where the players were the movers/shakers and I gave it a try. Two real life forced breaks, and even then I would still think of its 'world', its politics and its adrenaline, and miss it.
Having participated in many fleet actions over the last three years, I can safely say that other than skydiving, I have NEVER experienced an adrenaline rush like the one of jumping in or being jumped by an opposing battlefleet. NEVER.
The persistent one world of EVE truly feels in many ways MORE than a game. When you are there with corpmates, alliances and enemies...it truly has a 'grit' like nothing I've ever seen or experienced with computer 'games'. (and having started with pong.......the original arcade un', I have some experience with this statement.)
This is MY opinion, there are many others.....and way to GO MMORPG brutha's and sistas for NOT turning this into a flame fest.
I don't know the specific reasons. But I bet the NGE was a contributing factor. I am sure Eve saw an injection of players seeking another SciFi MMO to play.
I for one am very happy for the developers of Eve. I think it is awesome that what is essentially an little indie company has done so well with a small budget while the giant player-screwing-over SOE bangs its head in frustration...this really has to rub poodoo in Smeds face, and that makes me happy.
While I don't play Eve, I watch its progress and wish them the best of luck...as far as I can tell they really care about their player base and they re-invest profits back into upgrading the game's hardware and develop expansions with it....this just shows that when your priorities are where they belong (with the players) the money will take care of itself.

LOL...well you ARE conversing with another old timer. I, at MY first peak in game, was a director in the NVA sitting 'between' Halseth, Jade and Krullz, DBPreacher.....not famous, but helluva view at that time...that poor alliance didn't need outside help to ka-boom........lol.
You my friend, need to pick up the rhetoric and get back the fire. With KALI coming and factional warfare, it would be good timing to get back the "ZEAL" as it were. -heh heh.
Although you and I in game would be on opposite sides of a very racial fence, appreciating what you did for the RP side of things never gets forgotten. -grin.

Actually you're way off the mark here. The true alpha-class are those that have an extensive and established network of friends and collaborators. People who can out think the masses, possesses true leadership skills and charisma, and have the ability to push their associates towards a common goal.
That's the true player power in EVE. It is a social, political, and resourceful alpha-class that roams the stars in EVE's galaxy shaping the persistant history of EVE laying down the foundations of game-lore, legends, and stories to be told for future players.
Those that have focused themselves solely on skill points advancement has consistantly found themselves beaten into the dust (and sometimes right out of the game) by other players who have actually played the game.
Eve is successful because 100,000 people like it and the business model only called for 1/3 of those numbers for success. Eve may not be everyones cup of tea but those who like it appreciate the effort of CCP.
I've been playing Eve-Online for about 2 years now and I have to say it is truely one of the best MMORPG's out there. The thing that stands out the most probably the graphics. Because it is space oriented, it allows CCP to come up with whole new ideas on what types of graphics to add. Another thing is how skills are introduced. The time it takes to train a skill is about the same for every player except for skills that affect learning time which affects it partially. This allows players to make their way in the game without having to continuously kill NPC's and such. There are many ways to make money in this game also which also provides an easy way for new players to get started in the game. At first, when I started playing I didnt think much of this game and actully quit after my trial period of 14 days. I came back to it about two weeks later and realized the full potential of the game and began making my way to the top. Throughout my account's life ive taken breaks from the game totalling about a year to try other games yet I somehow find my way back to playing EVE. Another thing that sets it apart from other games it the ammount of patches deployed and how drastic they change the game. This part is probably what keeps players intrested in EVE and why it is ranked as #1 in the rankings.

Yeah, and im sure having 100 times as many skill training points over somone that hasnt been subscribed since launch had nothing to do with it. Suuuure, riiiight. It was the effort you put in, wasnt it.
I think EVE has gained several thousand players recently with the devasting revamp SOE did to SWG. EVE's numbers have climbed quite a bit since NGE hit 3 months ago and I suspect it will go even higher.
I wouldnt be surprised at all if EVE did a survey of their 100k player base and learned 25k joined directly because of the NGE revamp of SWG.
I also wont be surprised if EVE hits 125k or even 150k players soon. More and more ex-swg or soon to be ex players are finding about EVE.
No its not our beloved SWG pre-cu but its the closest thing around. Gameplay is pretty wide open like the sandbox style we had in SWG. The economy is player run. And best of all, no stupid levels. I love buying my skills with no limit except my wallet and imagination.
i personally didnt enjoy EVE. the 2 times i've tried it my enjoyment has been ruined by travel times/skill system and the like. but im also not one of those people who believe that becuase i didnt enjoy a game it doesnt have a very good setup for those who do. i want to get into EVE but just cant.

Not really. I have a player in my corp that wrecked havoc in PvP as soon he could fly tech 1 frigates. His totally non-standart setups give him the advantage. Ppl laugh at his strange setups. The laughter ends usually when they are in a pod.
Only bacause you cannot think out of the box you don't have to make up such claims. SP can help but are not the deciding factor in this game. PVP also takes place in groups 99% od the time and in groups it doesn't matter that much if one does 10% more dmg or not.
Originally posted by Samuraisword I don't like EVE. Not sure why it's popular but mining is boring and it's a grind to raise isk. It's a game that you need to be part of a guild to really play everything otherwise you can't stay alive in deep space.
You can stay alive in deep space alone, its just that task is very very difficult. But I run across a few people that do it that way.
Because eve dev have very good vision and lot of them actively play their own game, so they have good idea of balance. Also the fact they give expansions for everyone free is nice, since they have no reason to try boost their pre-order sales by adding some overpowered pre-order gifts.
Dev also communicate a lot with players. Just checked that out of 28 threads on first page of general discussion in 13 dev had posted and thats just general boards and they post to other forums too. They even spam a litte for fun and post to some threads where newbie is saying hi first time. Oveur is excellent example of CCPs good communication with players as he will be very direct and witty sometimes instead how often mmorpg devs speaking a lot but are saying very little of actual info.

Could it be the new 64-Gigabyte RamSan-400 Solid State Disk which removes virtually all database lag? I'll order two thanks! 3 GB/s bandwith
My theory:
1) lots of crappy MMORPGs that are all mostly the same
2) a decent sandbox game (haven't played it, just basing on what I've heard)
and most importantly
3) a highly successful astroturf campaign
because u can be retarded and still play the game well( boring seamless space and they claim to be high edge learning curve )
because u can gain xp while logging off or afk
because there aint any other game lkike this( this one is important)
