I find it amusing how ill-informed people are in reference to Final Fantasy XIV: Heavensward. Sure, you can dislike the game, but at least know the facts. This will also reference the few people that said "There hasn't been a successful, big budget quality MMO since WoW."
Final Fantasy XIV has over 4 million subs and growing. It is the most successful subscription based MMO since WoW and has released more content than WoW in the same amount of time, and at the rate it's going it will surpass the amount of content in WoW within half of WoW's total lifetime. It already has as much content in the first year and a half as WoW did after 3 to 4 years.
Now in reference to the expansion not being a game release, but an expansion...FFXIV's updates released every 3 months are like expansions in other MMOs. But FFXIV's actual expansion literally has as much content as the game did at launch. No MMO in history releases updates or expansions with as much content as FFXIV. Yoshi P, the producer, has said himself it will have a game's worth of content and have as much content as A Realm Reborn had at launch. They are literally treating the expansion like a game release, rather than expansion release, because it basically is content-wise.
3) New but same old content (I understand Landmark being high on this list, gotta give it props)
4) Same old with newish content
5) Warhammer 40k Eternal Crusade..........ENTIRELY NEW EVERYTHING. You can't count it having the same general 'scale' as planetside 2 as being the same old thing. Look into it, and check out the early livestreams. This isn't just a 3rd person shooter. It's far, far far more than that. Even if all it had was its intricate, advanced as hell melee system and no guns, psykers, sorcery, or general chaos... Seriously, look into it. It deserves the #1 spot.
"What do you think about this list" I think I know about most of these games already- and it's because they've already come out on PC. Not much of a list, is it?
There's nothing more gratifying than playing an MMO for free.
Blizaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaarddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd give ussssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss an mmooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo maybe sc universe
FF14 : ARR, I really enjoyed my experience for 8 months, but the RNG is a real deal breaker. Cancelled my sub earlier this year and not even looking back. It's a real shame, because the game has so much to offer, but the crappy RNG will make you rage quit eventually. Log on, gather shards, crystals and clusters for 10 hours, go back to town to craft 20 high quality stuff to exchange for the Lucis (whatever the name was) tools, after 5 hours of crafting, burned through all my shards and crystals and clusters, only crafted 4 High quality, exit the game, cancelled sub, uninstalled game, living a happy life now. I thought EVE-Online was a boring and annoying grinding experience, boy was I wrong, after quitting EVE for 3 years now and having played FF14, I really want to hop back in to EVE-Online. But, I am enjoying GW2 at the moment, so I'll stick with it. FF14 isn't for casual players, you'll have to put some heavy number of hours and a extreme amount of rage in the process. Is it worth it? From where I stand, no.
You must be kidding with Neverwinter, right? There is NO NEW CONTENT. All of the supposedly new content is the all the same old maps recycled, perhaps the color altered, or the flora/fauna moved around. Neverwinter is the most bug-ridden, incomplete, frustrating MMO I have ever played.
I am currently trying to find a new MMO so I can get Neverwinter out of my life forever.
With so many watered down games because of watered down business models,i wonder how successful any of them would be if they charged a subscription fee and were EXPECTED to deliver sub worthy content?I would say NOT very successful at all.
This whole free to play and KS's and early access have given the market a very FAKE look.
I watch streams almost everyday, every single game has been 1-2 months and drops off the charts. If that is what free to play and early access and KS can deliver, then i say they are a terribly weak system to be supporting.
last month it was all H1z1 ,now that game has dropped right out, then we see Reign of Kings now,it'll drop out just the same in a month or two Some other game ORi something has popped into the picture, same thing another cheap side scroller just as Child of Light was,it'll be gone in 1-2 months..Nobody is following ANY of those mentioned games in streams,so obviously they are not very popular.
You know what most ALL these games share in common, updates, lack of.FFXIV has received a lot of content over the past year,GW2 some content,i guess this being it's biggest.
Warhammer??I have seen little to no buzz over that game at all and trust me in the chat rooms in Twitch people are bantering about games all the time.
All of he bigger streamers seemed to be bored of their games, moving from one game to the next only to stay if they get a lot of subs from streaming a certain game.Point is the gaming industry is NOT delivering on prolonged FUN,and i would say not 1-2 months warrants any accolades at all.
It's probably because the gaming industry in general makes more money making a lot of poorer quality games than a couple games of a higher quality... They also make a lot more money off of sequels aka the same game reskinned.
Its a sad state for the gaming industry to be in, but regardless we have to search endlessly through the rough to find that single diamond that one year, that'll last us those glorious 3-4 months as opposed to the 1-2 months. Its pretty depressing actually. Really I'd like to look to ValvE to make some kind of amazing game, what with all the Steam money they're raking in, but alas we haven't seen much from them since... well Portal 2 really.
"For a lot of people, Neverwinter is a great example of how to do free-to-play right."
This has to be the dumbest thing I read in this article. I would say very few if any would say Neverwinter does F2P right. Are you smoking bath salts or something? Or did you get a nice pat on the back from PWI for endorsing their cash grab mmo.
Actually, it is refreshing to see an honest, hype free product from mmorpg lately. I started writing you guys off as corporate shills about 2 years ago lol.
Good to see some honesty coming back into the market. Plus when you really think on it; we have become spoiled with choices, and jaded with clones so much that it is hard to say whether to be happy or sad.
In the end, I choose happy. There are plenty of choices out there. Plenty. Not only that, 2016 is going to see several blockbuster betas, or even releases that are worth shouting about. SC and CU being the only two ive put any faith or coin into. Of course, I also invested in SOA, since you know, Lord British... cannot be denied his greatness.
