Hello peeps of MMORPG.com,
So, I'm basically thinking about starting up in a new MMO. My gaming history, in short, is WoW for 5 years, Lineage 2 for 3 years, League of Legends for 4 years, Guild Wars I for 2 years. Those games are my most played games, by far. Something more about myself: I generally prefer PvP over PvE, I'm not of a PvE person. So, why am I making this thread? Well, I'd like some people who have played both games to let me know what they liked/disliked about each game, and which game they'd pick over the other one and why!
Comments
I have played both and am currently playing ESO.
Both have decent PvP aspects if that is what you are looking for. ESO is what i play now instead of GW2 because I am more of a fan of the Elder Scrolls lore.
If you are looking for a quick jump into PvP then GW2 may be a better choice. It is easy to level characters quickly and the pvp is easy to get into at early levels.
Both have their positives & negatives just like every other MMO out there.
I would check out some youtube videos, read up on them and then make a decision. IMO you cant go wrong either way as both are great games I think. Just depends on the world you prefer to play in.
For me the lure of Elder scrolls won out as I personally enjoy that setting over GW2.
thanks for your thoughts mate.
well can you link me to a "megathread" then..
If you like PVP that is player skill based then I would say GW2. If you like PVP that is gear based, then ESO.
If you like your siege engines to shoot farther than 100 feet, then GW2. If you like all of your siege engines to fire shorter than 100 feet and all roughly the same range, and can be controlled by licking your keyboard, then ESO.
If you also like smaller scale instanced, objective based battle grounds, then GW2. If not, then still GW2 or ESO.

How about this one ?
http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/428518/Help-me-decide-ESO-or-GW2.html
the combat is better in GW2.
Everything else is better in ESO.
You'll be out of content by then.
You're fighting a losing battle man. You've put up a good fight for the last year, but I think it's time to throw in the towel.
Watch a couple side by side videos OP then decide. The choice should be pretty clear.
Lol, good old BC. I knew you couldn't resist.
OP, he is right about watching a couple of videos side by side though.

Both great games, but for pvp I would have to go with GW2.
The three main reasons for this are:
1) ESO has a lot of lag in pvp. Some people may try to claim it has been fixed or it just depends on your computer, but the truth is that there is just a lot of lag in ESO's pvp. So bad that there are stickied discussions about it on the ESO developer discussion forum, and you'll see the topic come up regularly on the forums elsewhere. Unfortunately its been quite laggy since launch, so I doubt that issue will be resolved soon. GW2 on the other hand runs totally smooth, there is occasional lag, but its incomparable to ESO's lag.
2) GW2 has spvp (you played GW1 so I assume you know what that is). There is no small instanced team pvp in ESO. So if you like that sort of pvp GW2 is a no brainer.
3) There is less of a gear/level gap in GW2 pvp. This point depends on the type of player you are. In GW2 you level quite quickly, and can level through spvp if you want. As a level 80 with just the base gold equipment that is easy to get you can take a small team, roam around and fight and win against large groups of enemies. ESO has a greater gear/level gap in all respects -takes longer to level, gear scaling is more extreme, scaling and acquisition of abilities and other class building aspects is more extreme. If you don't mind going through all that to be competitive then this point is not relevant, but for me its a bit of a pain to be far behind the curve unless I really grind.
Having said that, the pvp in ESO when it works is quite amazing. It has a very different feel to any other game I have played because of the way it is set up and things like any class being able to stealth, which creates so many interesting strategies that you don't see in other games.
They are both great games, so I think the only logical potion is to get them both, they are very cheap and b2p after all.
if you're a pvper it's pretty easy: gw2.
teso is not even close.
Depends on what you like I guess
But I'd say ESO ...That is a no brainer for me atleast.. John Cleese and with all the reacent additions it's the best MMO in..well a very long time.
GW2 felt very very childish ,I also felt that my characther didn't belong in it's scenery , and combat felt ..just chaotic ..I was very dissapointed with GW2 and I can't understand why so many players liked it when It released..
GW2: Better Shop Model - Can convert in-game currency to store currency. Gameplay is fun both pve/pvp no trinity (but specializations are on the way in upcoming expansion as to what role they will play tbd)
ESO: Worse Shop Model but still early in its implementation(i remain skeptical of pay walls and p2w). Gameplay is fun in both pve/pvp has trinity.
Both games are great I just find myself on the fence with ESO's new B2P model I typically wait to see how greedy a company becomes after that move guess ive been burned to many times. GW2 seems to be for the time being the game im playing out of the two, I find myself missing the first person combat and voice acting from ESO but thats about it.
For every 1 person who praises rvr in ESO theres 10000 who quit it and could barely fill 1 campaign with 600 player cap.
"spiritual sccessor" lol
ESO is good for story and slow pace, GW2 is better in every other aspect, so i would say both depending on the mood.
Also ESO has huge grind to get to competitive state in pvp (and with CPs it will only get worse and worse), GW2 is more like GW1 in that aspect.
That highly depends on how much you play (16 hours a day judging by that comment?). If you've only got a few hours to play each day it takes longer than that.
And that's only "out of content" on one character. You can easily play a different origin and race and have a whole new story available to play through.
Rushing to end game and then claiming "Bored now!" is not all there is to an MMO.
On topic: They're both good games, it just comes down to personal preference. So as BC said above, watch some videos. See which game's gameplay appeals to you more.
My SWTOR referral link for those wanting to give the game a try. (Newbies get a welcome package while returning players get a few account upgrades to help with their preferred status.)

This response again? Why do you care?
Anyway.....op, two VERY different games and you are only going to be able to decide for yourself on this one. Personally I am a GW2 fan. The biggest turnoff in ESO for me is the UI and the animations. The animations...even running....are horrible for a fairly new AAA MMO. The game feels clunky like an old beat up station wagon while GW2 plays like a hovercraft transiting over a well paved road.
ESO I found is more of a single player game in which you will have other people running around you. Imagine playing Skyrim and seeing a bunch of other people doing the same storylines as you...but all solo and not talking or interacting at all. That is ESO....but the catch is it is not as good as Skyrim.
I really want(ed) to like ESO, I am still trying to, it just isn't catching for me though.
PVP is WAY better in ESO because I LOVE going to Cryodiil (pvp zone) and doing my PVE quests!
Cryodiil is HUGE and has tons of PVP and PVE - you can gather, craft, explore, quest, 1v1 pvp, 1vmany pvp, small v small pvp, large v large pvp, run, hide, talk smack, scout, carry a scroll, die, kill tons of peepz and get ganked like it is Strangle Thorn Vale in WoW.
Have fun!

You should play GW2.

Gw2 is very similar, Quests are not as well written and the world is and feels a lot smaller, but it makes up for it With dynamic quests and better quality end game instances IMO.
Both have good pvp that is not broken with balancing, both are gorgeous in different ways.
Ps
rpg/mmorg history: Dun Darach>Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW > oblivion > LOTR > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(1000 elementalist), Wildstar
Now playing GW2, AOW 3, ESO, LOTR, Elite D
That might be true if you were a shut-in with no life outside of MMORPGs.

Honestly, I'd say get both...eventually. If money is a problem, get GW2 first since you can find it pretty cheap if you look hard enough. After the initial phase of B2P for ESO dies off, you should be able to find the game on sale somewhere.
Each game has something to offer, and you most likely aren't going to find a good comparison without just playing each game yourself. Since both are B2P you're not exactly stuck with a sub fee (although ESO has an optional sub now) and can play either on a whim.
For pvp Guild Wars 2 ofc. Better combat, better animations, more diversity in pvp and less gear dependent. With the new expension there will be strongholds and gvg too. In my opinion even pve is better in Gw2 but that's just my opinion. On the pvp side Gw2 is by far superior...
