Genderlocking classes is always a tricky proposition for me. I could not give a fuck whatsoever or I could stop playing the game.
I don't play MMOs to play the mechanical game, because MMOS are mechanically shit, without any exception I've ever seen. So I play them for the community etc, but I can really only manage to stick with them if I like the way a class plays. If there's one class I like better than others, I'm playing that class or not at all. This is why I /wowquit, thought it was a while before that actually took for good. I liked how survival hunters played in TBC, then they changed it up entirely and I couldn't play hunters anymore and nothing else compared.
It's pretty similar with appearance, the characters I play look the coolest I can make them, in my opinion. If that's male then they're male, if it's female then they're female. Same with races. So if devs fuck up a genderlock as far as I'm concerned and pick the wrong class to lock with the wrong race or gender, then my eventual ticket out of the game is punched and i'll be gone sooner rather than later.
ACE was very clear from the beginning and explained the additional cost and time required to provide full gender/class access. I noticed the Avatar options and customization is very light when compared to the detailed themepark games out there and I bet it is by design because that isn't the focus of the game Like they said... " the game isn't for everyone". Maybe you aren't the target audience.
Let them build a solid well designed PvP focused MMO and then worry about the additional genders. If the players want additional gender/customization options then offer it through a cash shop as a new skin which will help fund the the development efforts.
Nothing wrong with wanting to see male and female of every archetype. What I do think is terribly wrong is to call the decision "lazy". I find it a bit irresponsible to accuse a design team of being lazy just because one doesn't agree with their design decision. No need for the name calling when what's really going on is a difference in priorities. Even in the final paragraph, there are some very nice things said but it's negated by the over-the-top slander toward the beginning of the piece.
Edit: Here's a visual breakdown on Crowfall's Archetypes for those who might not be familiar:
It's also relevant to note that the Female Centaur was recently added. The Minotaur won't technically be included in the core module until the KS reaches $1.5M.

Sigh, some people complain about the dumbest crap. Who cares if it's gender locked. It adds more complexity to the game. I'm all for it and plan to play the hell out of Crowfall.
So much of the responses seem to be: How dare anyone criticize my beloved Crowfall over something so trivial! Why are you petty people complaining about something so small when you should be heaping praise on Crowfall!
It's one thing to say: I don't care at all about gender locked classes.
It's a completely different thing to say: How dare you care about gender locked classes.
The devs made a decision to save time and money by gender locking several classes. Some people will not care at all about this decision. Others will care a great deal. The idea that some Crowfall supporters find it offensive that people who don't like this decision should dare to express their opinion about it is bizarre and troubling.
I thought this was going to be something serious like George R.R. Martin being put in charge of creating the dinner menu. "Is dinner ever going come?" ~ "No it is just going to be described in great detail."
Honestly though I have no issue with a few animal classes being gender locked. Most classes are not. Sorry author, I feel you are being whiny. Calling the developers lazy is unprofessional and uncalled for in my opinion. I'm going to rate your opinion piece 2/10 for that reason.
I have a feeling that a lot of people are going to say this game is not a true MMORPG when it is done. To those people I paraphrase Inigo Montoya. ~ You keep using that abbreviation. I do not think it means what you think it means.
At launch I HOPE I can say," This game plays nothing like EQ, WOW, WAR, AION, TERA, RIFT, SWTOR, AA , Neverwinter or ESO." Because all of those games were awful to me except for the first two, ten or more years ago.

Umm... It's call the ability to deduce, here's the data required to reach the conclusion:
1. Characters in 3D games are made by "sculpting" 3D models, animating them, painting them and making gear that they can use (usually more 3D models)
2. These models don't spring from the ground in rural Arkansas, they made by talented artists
3. These artists need to eat food and buy Obamacare, so they need to be paid.
4. Pay costs money.
But even if you didn't know all of that... They're listed in the stretch goals which implies if they have more money, they can add these characters.

The only stretch goal sex addition I've been able to find was the female centaur. That hardly means that all of the gender locked archetypes are gender locked due to time an money. Were there other stretch goals I missed? I have no interest in this game so I may have missed some.
Now, with your superior ability to "deduce", the only reasons you could come up with for gender locking were time and money? How about lore reasons? That has been used in the past in other games and makes sense for certain archetypes.

Of course there are priorities, but this is a business,a game business and if your building a ROLE PLAYING game, guess what you need to offer the ROLE that the player wants be it male or female. That is actually just the simple starting point a game should strive to achieve, not something that is prioritized.
I mean could you use that excuse for everything then, like oh no map, they are not lazy or cheap, they are prioritizing.Or hey no weapons or armor, they are just prioritizing.
The ONLY reason it would be accepted is because there are SOME female models,if there were none then it would be some serious cheap game design.....ahem pointing at you SOE "H1Z1".
You see the problem here?I am sure ANYONE could find a massive amount of things in these games that did NOT NEED to be prioritized ahead of player models."role playing"<<<<<keyword,MODELS are like the FIRST thing you build or plan to build.

I've read posts on the forums where the devs stated that changing the current plans for gender locked classes would cost additional time and money which is fairly obvious. I've seen nothing stating that the original decision for gender locked classes was to save time and money. Most seem to be lore based. It might be a minor point but I thought I might get an informed response instead of a smartass comment from some (not aimed at you reeree). I'll just go back to spending most of my time on MassivelyOP.

Yeah, I think that's for the best. The tolerance for stupid and/or irrelevant questions is pretty low here. In your original question, you changed the context of the discussion without highlighting it, and then come back all hurt about the responses you received. If you do that all the time, you're probably a real joy to hang out with.
There's a million things that can be inferred without being stated by the developers, again you display an alarming lack of insight into game development. If they say "If we have more money, we can add this feature" - THAT MEANS THEY WANT TO ADD THAT FEATURE. What's your competing theory, that they ran out of ideas of stuff that they wanted to do so just threw some random crap up on Kickstarter? That's now how game developers work.
The one and only thing i can't stand about crowfall is that the races, gender, and class are all locked. I've always enjoyed playing the oddball when it comes to race and class pairings.
I can tell you that i often use the term LAZY as well but i don't really mean it.It is actually a nicer way of saying ..."QUIT BEING CHEAP".We all know the employee does what they are told,it has nothing to do with them being lazy, heck we don't know if ANY of the employees are lazy,it is just a term of speech not really meant.

Well, I guess it's good to see that the writer wasn't the only one off the deep end here.
I want to "roleplay" a half-dragon female necromancer here. That is actually just the simple starting point a game should strive to achieve, not something that is prioritized. I mean, how can they think to make a roleplaying game without that option?
If there's variants on classes, like male paladin/female valkyrie or w/e that do the same thing, fine sorta. But over all, imo, gender locking is just lazy and cheap regardless of how much lore you can put into it. Its like games that are full 3d but have a billion invisible walls, so you can't jump over fences or go into water....lazy.
I personally don't like gender locked classes as it pulls me out of immersion as i enjoy playing male characters.
When i play a tank character it helps me immerse when i can play a big beefy strong guy who is willing to take the hits so his friends don't have to. Not saying a woman can't do it but i find it immersion breaking for me when i am forced to play a woman just so i can play the role i enjoy.
This is why i prefer games that let me pick my gender because then i can have the class and gender i wan't without being forced into something that i may detract from my fun.

I was skeptical at first but then I went and read the lore blurbs on the Crowfall site and I can certainly see it. Gender locking and the heavy race locking seems to come out of developing archetypes rather than traditional MMORPG race class combinations.
No, I don't. Could you direct me to those statements?
In your other post you say that you have no interest in the game. Yet here you are fighting a crusade against some gender restricted races (in that game you have no interest in)? Then you want ME to go find and link statements for you?
ROFL
If you are not interested in the game... move on. As has been said many times in the past, most of the people (and it really is only a small fraction of a fraction) complaining about this aren't people that were seriously interested anyhow. They are just along for their crusade. For proof go look at the AMA or twitch streams. Not a single question was asked about gender locked races/classes. Not one. The people actually interested in the game are asking questions about game mechanics.

The idea of gender locking is stupid.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
