[Column] General: 5 Reasons You Should Play Pillars of Eternity

SBFordSBFord Former Associate EditorMember LegendaryPosts: 33,129

Chances are you’ve probably heard about how great Pillars of Eternity is and if you’re not already playing it, then you likely will be soon. But if you have somehow managed to evade the recent hype, ignore the reviews flooding the internet, and just generally don’t think it’s worth your time, this article’s mission is to convince you otherwise. Pillars of Eternity isn’t going to be the perfect game for everyone, but it’s a game that everyone should at least play.

I will be buying it, but I'm tied up with 3 other games atm.

How is it for length?  Is it beefy like BG2, or shorter like Icewind Dale?

Hasn't anyone told you it's not the size that matters??  :)

Yes, by people who are size challenged :P

I will be getting it too eventually.  So far, from two different reviewers, have both said around 70 hours.  So for someone like me it probably means around 80 then.  To me that's just about perfect.

Ah but it does matter, try operating with something the size of your little finger then come back and tell us that's true.

Touché. Somebody will start saying how quality is more important than size and it depends on how you play it. :)

Definitely getting this but I'll wait a few months for a Steam sale. I buy very few games at release these days.

Started up this last night, and it seems to be pretty good. Remains to be seen if it's the total smash hit the hype points it out to be. But the first thing to hit me was how much I miss the RPG from games like this, it's just not present in modern games the same way. That you have to read a lot of text actually feels refreshing after the last decade of on the rails rpgs. And the graphics that has been a subject for discussion, only gives me more nostalgia and "fits" these kinda games if you ask me. Looking forward to sink some more hours into it!

The major problem with games like this, you get to the end and want more and there isn't any.   MMO's ruined me for any of the rpg games, even though this game seems to be much better than the norm.

There are several bugs and one big bug in the latter parts of the game.

Only bug I've noticed is my Steam Achievements not working still =(

But I have no regrets buying it. It is fairly challenging =)

One single reason I have not bought it:

    No multi-player.

For me, games are meant to be social. Not saying its not deserving of the rave reviews. Its just that my limited gaming time is spent with friends. It sucks getting old...

actually I am glad it does not have multi player, we have mmo's for that, this way Obsidian could concentrate on the single player exp

I wish they had included it, but since that wasn't THEIR vision I am certainly not demanding they add it or even complaining.  MMOs are OK, but my real sweet spot are small multiplayer RPGs which are few and far between.  Really hoping Sword Coast Legends works out.

It's so nice not having to deal with D&D rules. This new system is similar in many ways but also feels fresher.

And I just love the Cipher class: fire off several spells to start the fight and then use a couple of shots from your blunderbuss to replenish the focus and cast again - no need to rest to have your best spells available again.

I'm guessing players who are just as eager to bypass cutscenes will be rushing through the text without a care.

Playing and LOVE it. Obsidian is sure a company for me - not a single miss.

the game looks interesting, i cant argue with that. But ill pass it for the same reason ive passed every single classic PC RPG before it, point and click. I would like some innovation in the way these PC RPGs control. Offering only point and click doesnt make them classic, nostalgic, epic, unique.... it just make them tedious, boring, annoying, and lazy. My personal opinion. WASD should always be an option on PC RPGs and action/adventure games.

You must be joking. WASD for controlling 6 characters would be a royal pain in the ass. This ain't Diablo. You control all party members and pause to issue orders often. It's strategy - not an arpg.

Thats the issue. I think many have never played a CRPG and think this is a diablo clone or something. The complaints I have heard dont really make sense. Like what you just pointed out.

It's absolutely wonderful, I've been playing it a ton for about 2 1/2 days now.. very hard to put down and go to sleep.

I never even hoped that this game will be better than Baldurs Gate, but it is.

    This is the new classic.

Only drawback at this moment : Its addicting as hell. I want to go to sleep at normal hours ;)

After the more recent debacle over a game that charged AAA premium price for a game that took at most, about 7 hours to play through, with no replayability, then yeah, size is kind of important. Kind of the reason why i chose not to buy either BF Hardline or the Order 1886, at least not until they hit the 10$ bargain bins.image

Except for the fact that the game DOESN'T only offer point and click, and it does indeed have keyboard movement that you can hotkey to whatever the fuck you want, its just defaulted to arrow keys.

If you're going to claim a game doesn't have something, at least make sure it doesn't have it otherwise you just come off as ignorant.
