Buy-to-play MMOs are becoming more and more popular around the industry. It’s clear that free-to-play games are expanding and they're becoming more and more popular, but they’re not the only alternative to subscription based games. Even for MMOs, options exist for you to buy the game itself (or a registration code, in most instances) then never have to pay another dime again, unless you want to.

Hmmmmmmm, so you are saying that GW2 does NOT warrant a place on the top 5 B2P games? I find it really difficult to think of any other, more worthy B2P games, but feel free to make an argument on how GW2 doesn't deserve to be on the list. An argument other than, "here we go again"

WoW is not on the list because WoW is not Buy 2 Play.
Apparently, even reading the title before commenting is too much for people these days.
The post didn't even make sense. Shameless plug.
Errrm.. aren´t these the ONLY buy2play MMOs?
Oh wait, Defiance. but I think that´s it
Lol, that's what I was thinking.

More worthy? TSW and ESO for starters. But GW2 has it's place in the list.
Sorry, for clarification, I don't agree or disagree with how deserving GW2 is of #1 (whether it's an ordered list or not), but it's pretty subjective. I think that the difference between 1, 2, 3, if it were an ordered list, would be pretty trivial. I would have put Destiny over any of the ones listed. That being said, I can't dispute that GW2 belongs on the list.

I even dare to say that 4 and 5 are not even real MMOs but just HUB games with co-op gameplay (Destiny for sure - awesome game BTW). Aside from 1 trough 3 I can only come up with Perpetuum as a real MMO that is Buy2Play. And perhaps later this year we can add Wildstar to the list as well
Except that both those games launched as P2P sub games, failed in that model, and were forced to transition to a B2P model. GW2 was set up as B2P from the very beginning before it even launched. So just for starters GW2 has a better business model because it is set as such from beginning.
As for content, both those games are lacking something that GW2 has. TSW is missing massive PVP siege battles, ESO is missing small mapped battleground PvP fights. Guild Wars 2 offers a ton of options for a ton of different play styles for people to get into and swap.
Oh, and combat wise out of all 3, GW2 is hands down better. TESO has its combat designed for consoles from the start, so it has invisible, artificial hitbox assists. TSW, having watched streams and read opinions on -although not experienced it directly-, the combat is said to be the very worst aspect of the game that turns off some from the game entirely.
It most certainly does on a non biased perspective.However for me ,i quit the game within the first day and MANY games have at least kept my interest beyond day 1.Rift and Eve for example i have tried 5+x on each to enjoy them but keep quitting.
However subjugating games into their own niche to warrant being good does not buy into my sound ideals.A game simply has to be good...period and i have certain criteria for being good.
Yes there are bad games i have played,but NEVER do bad games keep my interest for more than 3 weeks.To me a quality game from my perspective is a game i WANT to play for months on end and NOT just to say ...hey i finished this game.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
Well if we look at from that angle than we could also advertise the top 5 biggest fails in mmo industry and maybe gw2 would have a place in it
Exactly man this is just a stupid way to advertise it in my opinion, very lame, i hate this stuff , I'm angry because this was the only game where i tottaly regreted my money spent , after 5-10 hours of playing it. I fall in to the hype for this i really hate this website i never trust them again,i come here only for other ppl comments. This was like 3 years ago but I'm still angry how idiot i was to jump and buy it without any conclusion because of the hype. It was my worst experience in gaming
I think of those 5 games the only one that really stands out is GW2, as has already been mentioned, both TSW and ESO are failed P2P games that had to drop the whole P2P thing in order to survive, TSW i think has pretty much clung to existence by the skin of it's teeth, and ESO, may soon be in the same situation, as for the Crew and Destiny, not sure the Crew even 'happened' one of those 'failure to launch' games, it was a total dud, and Destiny did the whole Titanfall thing, huge launch, and 6 weeks later.. nowhere ville, GW2 is about the only game in the list that was actually a successful game.
The whole thing kind of reminds me of a beauty pageant, where GW2 is the catwalk model and the other guys, just a bunch of hobo's they grabbed off the street, and asking which is the prettiest
* archeage
* aion
* rift
* APB (If defiance qualifies as mmo, so does APB)
* champions online
* age of wulin / wushu
* age of conan
* star trek online
* cabal
* planetside 2
* lord of the rings online
and i even left out most of the asian stuff.... so yea, they are totaly the only 5 f2p games out there...........
"I'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up! Not me!"
i think you need to read the first bit again
if we were listing F2P games we'd be here all week, you can't throw a brick down the street without hitting at least 50 of them, but B2P, not that there is really that much difference i must admit, so i can see why the 'confusion' arises, is supposed to be something different
