I have tried many mmos (Lineage 2, Warcraft, Elder Scrolls Online, Wildstar, Tera, Warhammer, Aika, Perfect World, Aion).
I will not stand in the game itself if it is good or bad but in the sociality and how much alive it feels. Up to now the only game that had the feeling that its a solid world was l2, the most social and unique game in this department from all. Its the only one that feels that you can make friends, enemies and in the end you need the others -that after some time you learn their names- and what they are like normal life
This has to do with the no instance, no phases and no loading screen world. I am playing Warcraft and Lineage 2 this period at the same time. Warcraft has 7+ million players and my server is always full but i feel like i dont know anyone, names doesent matter, raids are anonymously grind, we dont even talk in the open world, I am at garison, city or inside a raid only. Actually there is no open world anything. On the other hand in L2 -that has much less people- i am everywhere, in places with people, out in the world doing stuff and meeting people that i will see again the next day and the day after.
Also in most games Its not the sociality of the guild/clan the problem. The problem is the social aspect of the server community. If the only social part of an mmo is the guild/clan then is not an mmorpg game, its a multiplayer game
Bottom line is that i dont care about anything else -after all the mmos that i have played- rather than the interaction of the community and L2 is the king for me

OP is right !.......I wish someone would make at least one new one.
In other words....I wish someone would make at least one MMO.
I'd say the MMO I did the most pure socialization in was CoX. Costume contests, dance parties, all of that jazz was going on daily in that game. A lot of fun was had, but I don't currently talk to a single person I played that game with.
The gaming friendships forged in 2003 in SWG still hold strong to this day, on the other hand.
Not so much pure socialization in SWG, but far more meaningful.
Still really close to some of my Guildmates from Lord of Ultima, as well.
I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.
EQ1 did that for me.
I dunno, had plenty of social interactions in any MMO and even in CORPGs like Guildwars.
I think people were most chatty in EQ2 the first few years after Wows release though (I kinda made a niche group of players I havn't seen since, it use to have a pertty tight community). People were also very friendly and chatty in Meridian 59.
Basically clicking away text windows ruins every MMO, try to have fun instead of rushing things. Without story and lore all there is left is a bunch of mechanics.

The social aspect is one of the reasons Lineage 2 has been my game for almost 10 years.

As long as your in a guild, I would say yes, any mmorpg can be a social experience.
My most social MMO had to of been UO for sure, mostly because I felt like my characters life depended on it. Making friends in that game was essential to being able to stay alive.

Time played this level: 39 Days, 1 Hour, 24 Minutes, 5 Seconds
As i edited my post about that if the only social thing is the guild/clan then is not mmorpg is multiplayer. If every guild is a close community without interaction with the others then is not so social after all
That's not the only social thing. While adventuring it is possible to help players out along the way and and answer questions about stuff they have in chat. Also there are a lot of calls for help with content. I've helped players and been helped by players a lot. If by social you mean hanging out in the local mmo bar everyday and having deep meaningful conversations about everything under the sun, I guess I'm not social then.

SWG was a very social game for me. Like EvE it was very player driven. I remember shouting out advertisements for weapon slicing services (and getting tons of walk up customers) at the major starports. I also sent in game spam emails (before spam emails got so popular in RL ) to every Smuggler I saw, advertising my vendor that sold crates of slicing supplies and cheap knives to grind slicing exp on. I met a lot of other Smugglers and made a name for myself on my server. I haven't played another MMO like that since. Well, except for EvE but I just couldn't get into that game.

+1 hahahaha
no i didnt meant that mmo bar thing even though sounds interesting
For its short life, Matrix Online had an amazing player community. Easily among the best, most active, and friendliest I've ever been part of.
Seemed like every time you logged in, there was some player-run event going on. Fashion Contests, Combat contests, parties - often hosted/dj'd by a streaming radio station.. there was so much going on in that game.
That doesn't even take into account the amount of GM involvement, through the roleplay of major story characters (Niobe, Merovingian, Morpheus, etc). A guild I was in became the unintentional focus of a GM-run event in-game one night. It was during the story arc where an assassin was out to kill Morpheus, because he was stirring up shit with the machines to get Neo's body back, and it was feared that he'd reignite the war.
Well, there was an in-game marriage taking place between two crew-mates.
To try and make a long story short, here's what had happened... You could add the story-critical characters to your friends list, so you'd know when they jacked in. Morpheus had done so when the wedding was setting up, so one of the crew members contacted him and asked if he could show up and maybe say a few kind words for the newly weds.
The GM team decided to have some fun with this. So, they sent the assassin to the church with the idea that they'd intercepted the communication between my crew-mate and Morpheus. The assassin showed up, just in case Morpheus did show. Someone spotted him and we took chase, but there was no way we were catching the guy lol.
Morpheus contacted my crew-mate afterward, and said "I understand you had a visitor". He then stated that it was probably for the best that he didn't come. He then asked for the names of the newly weds, and then contacted them to offer his congratulations.
So, by sending off a simple request, we became a small part of a major story-arc happening in-game.
I have never seen that level of GM interaction, or had anything like that happen to me in any other MMO I've played, period.
It sucks so bad that the game didn't do better. That probably would have become my "home" if Monolith could keep up. Instead, WB off-loaded it to SOE, whom let it rot on the vine 'til they took it offline completely (something they had a penchant for doing, it seems).
To this day, I can't hear B.Y.O.B. (System of A Down, for any who may not know already ) without thinking of that game, since that's where I first heard it, via Radio Free Zion.

For me it has been UO, Lineage2, WoW, Lotro and Darkfall
I cant really say which of those was the best.
UO - was the first and Monday night duels at the guild hall were awesome.
Lineage2 - we took Heine on the Lionna server after getting half of the non-elite guilds to back us. Most political game and felt like a great achievement. Had fun nights grinding while listening to L2 radio.
WoW - whenever our raid group downed a boss for the first time it was excellent, had a great weekly group
Lotro - I still group with these guys, we have facebook etc now so things have persisted outside the game, many many good times raiding
Darkfall - No game brought the us and them mentality more than this one, defending a keep for hours on a weekend was a great experience in DF1
Nowadays I play solo more often than not, its too hard to block out time for gaming like I used to, but have a lot of great memories thanks to these games..
Playing: Darkfall New Dawn (and planning to play Fallout 76)
Favourite games have included: UO, Lineage2, Darkfall, Lotro, Baldur's Gate, SSX, FF7 and yes the original Wizardry on an Apple IIe
Couldnt agree more... Lineage 2 was my best mmo social experience so far, I was living in the game and not just playing the game. Used to play it some years ago, stopped tried a bunch of others like Aion, Tera, SWTOR, ESO and even though I had a great time nothing compared to L2.. and thats why a few months back started L2 again on the 'new for me' european server Naia and I must admit I was surprised to see so many people still playing L2 (old and new players) and I'm enjoying it. Good old L2 times. Different but still great.
Everquest, without a doubt.
But, have to say, my time in ArcheAge was incredibly social. More than any game since the dawn of WoW. It would be a close second.
